@Jazone@theforkiverse.com @benroyce@mastodon.social @mattblaze@federate.social I'm merely pointing out that Crypto Currencies aren't even really crypto currencies anymore. They're just randomly valued and named denominations of standard Fiat money, albeit without backing by the full faith and trust in a government entity because, definitionally (though there are a few exceptions) they aren't issued by a government. Crypto Currencies are no different than Neopets or Pokemon. As you allude, you cannot control what people do with their money, and no argument from me, except that people should regularly note that relationship. After all, the purpose for using the word "currency" in the coined name is to borrow the senses of stability and legitimacy from government issued Fiat Currency.

Well, this is disturbing from a labour rights perspective. Mandating binding arbitration before a strike kind of intrinsically means there will be no ability to strike. The arbitrated solution is, after all, binding, meaning both sides must abide by it. How do you strike if you MUST abide with an arbitrated settlement? https://www.cp24.com/politics/2026/09/18/feds-could-introduce-new-labour-legislation-as-soon-as-next-week-sources/ #CDNPoli #CanPoli #Canada

@benroyce@mastodon.social @Jazone@theforkiverse.com @mattblaze@federate.social Did you know most crypto currencies no longer even use the blockchain? It's true! All those crypto exchanges found it so inconvenient to have to wait for miners to generate a new block (never mind the limited number of transactions that could actually be encoded into each block) that they now use essentially standard banking tools and databases for their intra-exchange transactions and, where agreements exist, even for some inter-exchange transactions.

@benroyce@mastodon.social @PeterLG@theblower.au First of all, I live in Canada where we have a government position called "Privacy Commissioner", so I'm coming at this from a slightly different angle than you. Having said that, even in the US there is a difference between a government entity and a private entity as well as their responsibilities to citizens. Were this an issue of a Flock style camera being used to issue the citation, I'd be much more inline with you. Some jurisdictions (sadly the Federal Government included) have glommed onto the private sector loophole that exists in the US. See purchasing of commercial data that the US government could not otherwise surveil in order to obtain. However, this was not that. This was a bog standard, government installed speed camera. It sounds like the municipality had outsourced some manner of administrative appeals process, but that, again, is separate to my emphatic request that we separate automated road safety enforcement that has proven its worth from wider "AI" devaluation.

For all of the focus on building another Trans Mountain pipeline or another Coastal GasLink pipeline across BC, if Canada wanted to service Europe with its "Energy" products, wouldn't it make more sense to build a pipeline to Churchill, MB? (Note, because we're quickly exiting the age of fossil fuels and have already entered the age of electricity I am not actually advocating this position, but it makes more economic sense than increasing the capacity of pipelines that aren't near their current capacity yet and which already service Asia which itself is rapidly electrifying. Canada's "fossil fuel energy" economy will only be economically viable for, like, 10 or 15 more years, TOPS!) #Discussion#CDNPoli #OilSands #TarSands #ABPoli #CanPoli #FossilFuels #EnergyEconomy #Canada #Alberta #MBPoli #Manitoba #Pipeline #Pipelines #Churchill #ChurchillMB

Well, on first blush, the bond market seems to like The Fed's decision to hike rates in the US by 25 basis points. The question is, what will Trump do? He'd pledged to tariff the entire planet if The Fed raised rates, an action that would itself increase the inflation that The Fed is trying to fight with the rate increase. https://www.theguardian.com/business/2026/sep/16/us-federal-reserve-votes-hike-rates #USPol #USPoli #USPolitics #RateHike #TheFed #FinancePolicy #Economics

@benroyce@mastodon.social @PeterLG@theblower.au Here in Ontario, we've had a long and tortuous history with automated road safety enforcement, to the point that our idiot Conservative Premier has at various points opposed, then supported, then opposed speed cameras in school zones. His initial opposition was due to his libertarian road safety mindset, essentially the biggest road user wins. Famously his little brother, the Crack Smoking Mayor of Toronto, said bike lanes are like "swimming with the sharks, sooner or later you're going to get bitten." (see video) But after the death of a prominent Conservative fundraisers that was hit by a car, he was suddenly all for photo radar in school zones. Then, after it was revealed that members of his cabinet had received thousands of dollars on automated speed camera fines, he was suddenly all against them again. Notwithstanding the politics of it, the fact is that AI isn't (necessarily) involved in automated speed & red light camera enforcement. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nySs1cEq5rs

@benroyce@mastodon.social @PeterLG@theblower.au Because I'm a road safety advocate. I look at the statistics and the statistics say that jurisdictions that have automated speed enforcement have fewer road fatalities. (And that's before you factor in the phenomenal mass of American vehicles... I always know when there are American tourists in my town, their vehicles are distinct!) As I said before, I don't want the road safety baby to be thrown out with the (legitimate) anti-AI and anti-Flock bathwater. Indiscriminate license plate recording & surveillance or the kind that Flock engages in is harmful, and I fully support my American neighbours in their opposition to it! But Red Light Cameras (at least as described by the original speaker) are not that. This situation is a bog standard red-light camera violation as has existed since the 1980's. This one is not an AI/Flock issue.

@benroyce@mastodon.social @PeterLG@theblower.au If a PRIVATE ENTITY ISSUED A TICKET, that would be a different matter. However, from the article there does not appear to be a private entity involved. A government (City of Pensacola) installed and operated automated red light cameras under established case law precedent originating from and tested since as far back the 1960's. Under such system's, because of their automated nature, they CANNOT stop the operator, and per established case law it has been deemed reasonable that the owner of the vehicle be fined as the owner is likely to be the operator. The only novel concept being introduced here is the term "AI", along with its baggage, specifically privacy intrusion, etc. But let's be clear, this - namely automated law enforcement - has been going on for decades with broad societal support and broad societal benefit. Just because "AI" - particularly without proof this is, in fact, connected with AI or information sharing - we shouldn't throw out the baby with the bath water.

@benroyce@mastodon.social @PeterLG@theblower.au Because I've seen this very argument for years from people who get caught by automated enforcement, and it's never had traction in society until now because all of a sudden they can cry "AI" and get people to their cause. No one has had issue with this before! Literally the only difference here from the exact same scenario five years ago is that the guy yelled out "AI". Courts have ruled that placing the burden on the owner to prove they weren't the operator is reasonable. Any 'cash' component - I only read the article - I oppose. Here in Ontario our Conservative Premier recently mandated Cash Bail and judges are opposed. I support the judiciary, justice & innocence until guilt is proven shouldn't be based on your level of wealth. But that is all totally separate to the real, positive impact that automated enforcement has on the road safety. It has proven safety results. It's so accepted that it's literally a comedic plot point in entertainment media. (see attached)

@arthurgron@mstdn.ca For sure! The 4.5m height minimum is often made taller to allow for front loading garbage trucks. The need to place building services - emergency stairwells, elevators, garbage chutes - makes for shallower storefronts which, by North American standards, are un-rentable. I'd argue that what we need is more smaller spaces for kiosk type shops, as opposed to established practice which is to make wider shops, which in practice end up doing what you say: turning 4 storefronts into 1. This is because developers - who often hang onto retail space at favourable terms for themselves - want to rent to chains and franchises for a long duration, whereas smaller spaces are better for entrepreneurship, innovation, but are intrinsically riskier. But downtown aside, I'm referring to the Lawrence & Markham, Bayview & Finch, Kipling & Rathburn, where the only shopping spaces are car-oriented plaza's and mixed use is strictly forbidden!

@TrueNorthSpice@mastodon.world I won't necessarily blame the people, the fact is we've got a raging dumpster fire down south and a legacy media that is trying to "do more with less" which inevitably means licensing US content (whether a whole segment with a foreign journalist reporting, or even just a Canadian journalist that's putting together a clip package of US news) and reporting on the US dumpster fire. CBC's The National has pretty consistently had a whole block (that is a commercial to commercial series of segments) devoted to the US, even when nothing is going on there or it's on a subject that won't directly affect Canadians (the argument is always "when the elephant rolls over we feel it..."). Unless there is a scandal being presented to you, you have to be a pretty diligent political junkie to have provincial, and especially local news 'fed' to you, whether through algorithms or just having an established network on Mastodon. I don't know how to push local issues onto people like used to be done.

Well, if 1995-2003 - the Conservative Mike Harris years - are any indication, #DougFord is hiding a massive budget deficit and is planning to privatize and sell off public agencies to plug the budget hole.

This is exactly what happened starting around 2001.

The agencies being reviewed are: - Metrolinx
- Workplace Safety and Insurance Board
- Supply Ontario
- Liquor Control Board of Ontario
- Ontario Cannabis Retail Corporation
- Legal Aid Ontario
- Agricorp
- Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario

I'll bet you that between now and April 11, 2030 at least one of those is no longer a public agency

Gotta love the justification too:

"...government spending has been under increased scrutiny recently, due to Toronto-area Progressive Conservative caucus members billing thousands in Toronto hotel stays.
Premier Doug Ford has said he told them to pay back "every single penny," but [Treasury Board President Peter] Bethlenfalvy today could not say if that has happened."

  2. Fake tickets are a direct product of John Tory's administration's first outsourcing of online ticket purchases to Ritual, which was a wholly corrupt transaction in and of itself. In short, the Ritual CEO would purchase standard tickets through the City of Toronto's credit card purchasing portal on his points earning AMEX, the card with among the highest fees for the merchant (City of Toronto) then just re-sell them on his app at face value. He'd pocket the points and charge the city for the privilege!

Canada remains anti-nuke, but its potential path to the bomb is getting shorter | CBC News

Canada's indigenous nuclear industry, homegrown tech, use of heavy-water reactors producing plutonium and tritium, and abundant domestic supply of uranium all position this country as a prime candidate for developing a nuclear weapon. The government now faces a big decision over whether to enrich uranium for use in new small modular reactors, the one missing piece before it can produce a modern, two-stage thermonuclear device.

Here's the thing, in a vacuum, and when dealing with a commodity, that would be a rational response: we've got fewer "medical human resources", we need to make it so they do more.

But that's a false premise.

  1. As you point out, these aren't resources, these are human beings.

  2. There continues to be an issue of government administrations that have a stake in privatization shaping this issue.

  3. I'd say most important, and lacking in the debate, this doesn't address the compositional change of medical issues between when #Canada's #Healthcare system was created vs. today.

When Healthcare was setup in the 1950's the overwhelming majority of medical issues were emergent in nature, that is to say injuries and accidents.

Today the majority of care goes to chronic issues - cancer, degenerative conditions, etc. - in which outcomes are a lot murkier than "bone broken vs. not broken", including a factor difficult to measure: quality of life.

Fundamental reforms are needed.

If you pitched this in a writers room as an allegory for what's going on in the US right now, you'd be laughed out of the room for being too unrealistic. https://www.reddit.com/r/aviation/comments/1w97ffp/amazon_767_landing_way_too_fast_and_late_at_mia/

Replying to
@ScribblersEmporium@mastodon.world What I hear is "jobs in pre-processing our crude so it's compatible with European refineries". That also opens up opportunities with secondary products (and also challenges with dealing with externalities from that processing, and I think there would be an appetite for European investment in that.

@hewer_of_code@mstdn.ca as more people stop using the values change. Speaking of, I know someone that just got an electric car. Costs $8 to fully fill it up, goes 450km per charge. This was an electric skeptic before. As sticker shock hits more will switch.

For everyone that screams "25th AMENDMENT NOW!!!" all the time about #Trump, I'd like you to consider, for a moment, the consequences of that:

  • #JDVance was installed as the VP Candidate as a result of a deal between Trump and #PeterThiel

  • Peter Thiel & JD Vance are ardent followers of #CurtisYarvin, who advocates for Techno Feudalism, essentially a return to medieval times where nobility owned manors complete with resident serfs

  • The Office of the President of the United States has been vested with unitary powers via Supreme Court decisions and congressional indifference that would make the founding fathers sick

What do you think a JD Vance presidency would look like given that?

@christyceeck.bsky.social Liars lie. And #Ontario is stuck with him until 2030 because he also rescinded fixed election dates so that he doesn't have to face the electorate. Yay #Corruption! #ONPoli
