@giuseppegv@mastodon.uno @Tutanota@mastodon.social The inevitability of AI is a lie created by a wealthy investment class that has so thoroughly stolen everything not nailed down that they have to invent new things to put their money into. It hasn't even proved that it's useful or even able to turn a profit for anyone, let alone that it's "atom bomb" levels of significant. It is infact making people less competent, less literate, less functional. AI is still a bubble, that hasn't changed.

It's not some great comfort that slimemold and cockroaches will inherit the earth.

@glyph@mastodon.social After tech enthusiasts finally figured out how to build an ocean-drinking, sky-burning, human-poisoning, soul-dismantling machine just to try and push artists and creatives out of the picture, and one finally had the realization that their interests and processes aren't that different after all from artists. I don't feel satisfaction, but I don't feel much sympathy either, as tech "progress" turns our planet into an ash heap and disintegrates what little culture we have left.

@BrianJopek@mastodon.world Remember that this is ultimately possible because of the collaboration of the Supreme Court. There should be no room in the opposition for anyone not calling to expand and reform the court. The power of individual SCOTUS judges must be watered down.

@glyph@mastodon.social As an artist who grew up with tech-minded people telling me how useless and unserious art is, and how I shouldn't waste my time pursuing creative careers, how the social sciences were a joke, who had to listen to them sit in the back of english class and complain when we had to learn about subtext, symbolism, and metaphor and "Why don't they just write what they mean literally?" It doesn't really give me any satisfaction that an individual of that class of people became self-aware.

@rasterweb@mastodon.social There's always more power in being for something than only being against something. Having a specific agenda created from populist policy is the antidote to the malaise of slow-rolling capitulation that liberals have put us in.

@jeffjarvis@mastodon.social It should be noted that this could've been avoided if the state governor, Kathy Hochul, was willing to increase the corporate tax rate by a measly 2%. Mamdani and his team are determined to find the funding for his projects and to balance the insane city budget deficit that the previous mayor created. Whether the governor is fiscally and morally responsible enough to help with that or not is on her.

@shoq@mastodon.social It's been pointed out before that conservatism itself was an ideology created explicitly following the decline of feudalism to protect the interests and wealth of the aristocratic middlemen. That's what the founders of the US largely were and why they did things like make voting rights dependent on land ownership and why originally they had it rigged up so the senate wasn't elected by the people, to keep things from getting too democratic up in here.

@OGJester@pnw.zone @FluentInFinance@mastodon.social I'll say I'd trust them with one more than Israel, just judging purely from how each party has conducted themselves diplomatically. Iran has shown a great deal of restraint. But more importantly; the Iranians don't even want a nuke. They aren't saints, but up until Trump/Israel started assassinating all the leaders they could, there was a fatwa against nuclear weapons as the religious authority viewed them as an abomination against god.

@ashwin @arstechnica The degree to which reddit tries to control speech, from the admins down to the individual mods, is pretty out of control. The culture is completely toxic and fosters super-concentrated ideological bubbles. I know people complain about places like mastodon.social having supposedly lax moderation, but it's a breath of fresh air in a sea of social media that want to test every word that you type against some pre-approved database of Acceptable Think.

@QasimRashid@mastodon.social Centrists want people to see them as a stop-gap/less evil as opposed to what they actually are; a collaborating arm of the fascist movement that exist to sap the momentum of the left. It's why they are always desperate to keep progressives from getting past the primaries into any general race. It's why they rarely if ever endorse progressives who do, often even tacitly putting support behind the Republican candidate when the chips are down.

@hellomiakoda@pdx.social Not a perfect solution, but you could talk to your bank to block any transactions from their company. A friend had to do something similar when the pstaff at Planet Fitness gym told him he had to cancel his membership online and online they said he had to do it in person. So he just blocked the membership withdrawal directly.

@erici @hakona@im.alstadheim.no The other side of that coin is that petty tyrant admins who will censor at the drop of a hat are reluctant to defederate from larger instances since it isolates them more than it works as a punishment for individuals. Personally, I prefer a more hands off moderation (barring obvious stuff like naked bigotry, spam etc.), I don't want to always be wondering if my opinions align with what the mods think I should think. In that way some of the larger instances serve as an anchor.

@samlitzinger@journa.host The founders were wealthy, land owning aristocracy. They understood what they were doing. Remember that even after the Revolution only land-owning white men could vote. Many veterans revolted against our government for the very reasons the revolution was supposedly fought for to begin with; taxation without representation. The elites put their war debts onto the people, who they deemed unworthy to vote. Systems like SCOTUS were created to stop things getting TOO democratic.

@ScottishGreens@mastodon.scot I find it kind of revealing that Israel is so invested in attempting to culturally tie itself in to Europe, it makes it so clear that Israel has always just been a colony of a bunch of European/American transplants with no real interest in actually being part of the middle east despite claiming some kind of deep heritage there. They want middle east land but don't want to be middle eastern.

@QasimRashid@mastodon.social Voters need to understand it more so than leadership. Voters need to understand that there are some progressive wins this cycle so far, but "voting blue no matter who" isn't enough any more. A bunxh of Newsoms or Buttigiegs aren't going to save our country. If we want to avoid returning to normal it means continuing to push even if there is a blue wave. It means rooting out every corporate democrat and replacing them with an actual leftist.
