Our sense of humor is misunderstood too often, in meatspace, and it makes life awkward. The Internet gives us the freedom to seek out likeminded folks, who dig our quirky humor, and whose jokes we get. It's so much fun to share laughs with people like that. If you're in a small town, where everyone knows everyone, you can't try your wild jokes, without inevitably being labeled "weird" or "queer", or something actually bad. If you're into some niche interest, that nobody around you gets, what do you do? That's what the Net is for. To seek out people who share your passion, and not have to think about their race, gender, sex, age, ethnic origin etc. As with humor, so with hacking. A hacker is known by their ideas & skills. Hackers are supremely colorblind. Personally, I am tired of being shamed for preferring online connections over afk connections. The term "sapiosexual" applies so well. Usually, I have to know someone's mind, before I will meet them in person. Trying to mix it up with people in meatspace is for extroverts, and there are too many bad experiences on that route. I know how to get out there and appreciate Nature to the fullest. So it's silly when people try to shame me for being a nerd who doesn't know the world away from the screen.

Though if you are on Zuck's platform, knowing full well that he sold Facebook user's data to Cambridge Analytica, you are like someone who stuck their head in a lion's mouth and then cries as he dies, about their right to safety. You can't go naked, walking around through a public square, saying, "Hey! What's wrong with y'all. I deserve privacy." Privacy and safety are not handed down. They require some intelligence on your part. Freedom is not given. The price of freedom is eternal vigilance. The powerful will not give up their power over you, unless you stand up and fight for your rights. Like it or not, that's the way the world is. It doesn't conform to your ideals. It requires active participation, and mindful effort.

Closed software vendors, which are a dying breed, have the deep pockets to lobby politicians, and bamboozle the people through media, into passing a superficially reasonable, but very insidious law. He went over to listen closely, then walked back to the village and told them about this mysterious outsider who had entered their secluded realm. Soon, there was a small crowd around the tree. They talked to the old man, who told them tales of the strange lands he had traveled. After a while, they brought him some food, and he regaled them with songs and stories. He was a jolly old man, and cracked jokes from time to time, and rather irreverently mocked the village authorities, who were beginning to be suspicious and resentful of this stranger. They didn’t want him around, but couldn’t throw him out, since he was getting to be a popular, avuncular figure with the people, and often laughed childishly with the children. One evening, when nobody was looking, the village chief decided to bribe him with a bag of gold coins, which he held in front of the old man. He told the man to leave, but he was completely ignored, as the old man kept on singing in extempore verse. Later, he brought in his hired goons, and they pointed swords at the old man’s face. The old man was unfazed, and started telling them another of his weird fables. They were perplexed, and backed away. The man stayed on, with the villagers bringing him food every day. They no longer took the chief seriously, as the man’s witty verses had skewered the chieftains blustery attitude too many times. The chief chafed, at being reduced to another of the people, but couldn’t do anything. Years later, one day, the old man got up, bade the villagers farewell, took a cane out of his bag, and tapping it like a blind man, walked away into the distance. The chief was relieved, for he thought the man was a holy fool, who could neither be tempted, nor threatened. Life in the village had changed a lot in those years, and everyone treated the chief like a commoner. The chief was aghast to realize that the old man had been blind all along, and his urgent communication simply never reached the old man.

With an organization like Apple, looting BSD code wholesale, there’s at least the possibility of a renaming layer, for a cohesive product, and a UX that some thought was put into. Wonder if a Linux distribution will follow this example, and add a user-friendly naming layer, making the quirky name a coder thought up ( WTF is Krita??!? ), visible, but secondary.

Suggestion: Instead of having each site host a separate instance of listnr, how about publicly hosted listnr servers, where any website owner can register their website? The listnr server will poll registered websites and broadcast updates over ActivityPub. Content changes can be detected using HTTP mechanisms, or by storing a cryptographic message digest of each registered web page.

Not a problem. I enjoyed the first book, and the first movie in the series. Could not choke down any more of that crap. I don’t really like magic. It is just deprived kids, getting wish fulfillment, and becoming depraved power hungry wizards/witches.

The Harry Potter franchise is big yawnfest for me.

Had a #Cannabis-induced cathartic premonition about 9/11, cried for a weekend, and moved to California. Lord Shiva's sacrament saved my life. What gets me is that in Manhattan's severe winds, the twin towers swayed 10 feet each way, by engineering design. We workers felt the sway all day. But when entire Boeing jumbo jets slammed into the towers, they did not budge at all — just collapsed vertically, like a cartoon film. 9/11 was an inside job, imho. Let’s ask questions and seek the truth.
