Sorry to say but the older I get the more I think that Douglas got the passengers for the Golgafrincham Ark Fleet, Ship B wrong....
Cos while it might be nice to get rid of the useless part of the population, at least they didn't hurt the rest of us. Far better to get rid of the super rich and the super ambitious and the dictators!

I certainly don't have an Extensive collection... but I have a few.
An ex of mine had a friend who did have his entire Bedroom wall as LP shelving storage must have been hundreds - now that was extensive - I wonder if he still has them

Half the issue - those selling/promoting heat pumps INSIST you have to increase your insulation because otherwise you'll save nothing... So is it the heat pump (under current systems and prices of electricity v gas) able to provide the same heat as a traditional gas boiler or do you still need that??
The other half is, as with ALL new products the lottery of getting someone who ACTUALLY knows how to install it or will you end up with a cowboy that's jumped on the bandwagon and cost you a fortune to sort out afterwards.

a. very annoying as his party was so bad at this,
b. I agree BUT we need a good person as PM not an idiot that appoints a proven liar (twice) regardless of the latest revelations (or not!) - I would be very against changing PM every 40 days if the person was perfectly capable.

I dunno how you get such a great picture without internal light reflecting on the windows (let alone being lucky enough to get a clean window without condensation inside and a clear night).
Did you take some black cloth to block out the lights and get under it like an old timey photographer with a glass plate camera?

@flup@mastodon.scot I didn't take it as such - sorry if it sounded bad, but also have to say it's tricky to compare a system that costs a lot and which the design crew constantly want to change for change sake (like removing the "Start" button on one version of windows till the outcry got them to put it back, or deciding you will get feature ...., on by default - whether you want it on not) to something that folk provide for free.

The Far Right is still attacking the EU, from both without and within pushing against supporting Ukraine for Russia and Russia itself using misinformation to erode support for the EU and at the same time supporting Right Wing, anti-EU parties like those in Hungary.

The big problem with this (which I agree with in principle) is that the rest of NATO have spent their (reduced) defence money on a completely unconnected range of weaponry, except where they have brought US weapons and are dependant on the US for maintenance or supplies !
Including in the case of the UK the Nuclear Weapons we are trying to suggest are on a par with the completely independent French one.
Trump has even openly talked about the ability to turn off aspects of those weapons!
For example it was only a previous presidential decision by Clinton that allowed civilians to access "un-degraded" positional data.
Virtually irreplaceable for targetting etc the US controls this.
Hopefully the European version Galileo can be used by these US built systems (though i note the Wikipedia page suggests it's still being upgraded this year).

Sadly the US system is EVEN worse than the UK FPTP version.
In the UK system at least anyone can stand in elections against the incumbent parties and occasionally win...
Part of this is having maximum spending limits... Something apparently our Trump, Farage, wants to change!!!
In the US with their primaries and party registrations etc apparently no one outside the locked up system ever wins
We need to ensure we don't allow this money in here so effectively any parties to be buying votes with their advertising.

It's of course why there's so many moves to discourage folk from voting that might volt against them...
Voting qualification restrictions from reading tests in Jim Crow days via ID requirements that make people that change names (many women) difficult to restriction on postal voting or closing voting locations
If one person against them decides not to bother....

Well the series is good if you like gay love stories with added sex...
But if that's the case you should read the books as they are much better.
The first book particularly is poorly served as a single episode drop in to explain the plot of the second book (rest of the TV series)

Sometimes I wonder how helpful is positive feedback of "look how well we are doing" really is
I guess it's s'posed to encourage folk to vote for the "winning" party, but knowing human nature I'd have thought that sort of message is as (if not more) likely to get supporters to say ah well if my side is winning I don't need to bother voting, or If my side is losing I better make a special effort to vote!

Yes I love many features of LibreOffice, it's just that particular feature missing that annoys me...
As to Gimp, well again there are features that I liked in a simple thing like Paint Shop Pro 20 years ago that are still not there...
Or that are stupidly difficult.
The issue I think is that often the folk writing the software are so skilled, (and the software so complex), that they find these things simple whereas a tinkerer like me with a little knowledge cannot find them or find they are obscured by functions I'd never use. (Or using specialist terminology I don't understand in the case of Gimp)
So I often end up "googling" how to do stuff. (And then half the replies are nice and helpful, and the other half from folk dismissive with a feeling like "anyone knows that" - that from people you know probably wouldn't know how to place an LP on a platter, or dial a number on a dial phone!)

I have a 22" monitor close to myself, and a Samsung TV as a second monitor the other side of the room if a want to use that for viewing YouTube Nebula etc = just works
I upgraded to Mint 22 from 21 and that too just worked - remembering how to install anything on Red Hat (just before it split into Fedora for free versions) 20 years plus ago (for almost anything) and the need to manually download and install multiple dependencies using the terminal - I don't think there is any comparison with how it works today to then.

But also I'd like to say about Libreoffice*:
I miss the simple functionally of find and replace paragraph ending marks; as it's long been a thing I used in word when working with text and the fact that there is an extn you can add to get it back (after a faff and not simply) proves I'm not the only one that misses it!

And again like with Trump's comments about turning off features on certain aircraft this suggests we should be as cautious about using US tech in our networks and systems as they say we should be about Chinese tech and even cars!

That The Orange Baby can be trusted to use a
our facilities in one way and not another anyway...
And I was listening to the LBC US correspondent speaking about UK non-involvement in various US Wars and the one he forgot was the Vietnam War which Wilson refused to join in with...
The UK has a long and honourable tradition prior to Blair (Iraq not Afghanistan) of not getting involved in US Wars unless WE thought it was a good and just thing to do.
And now our servicemen and our bases are under attack!

I have been rereading a book I first read in my youth, (and allowing it's by R Heinlein and so is filled with some right wing views) it did strike me when I read this damming of the popularist nonsense about "too many experts", "common sense" and the like!
"I remembered a time when my grandmother had asked me to explain television to her—the guts, not the funny pictures. There are things which cannot be taught in ten easy lessons, nor popularized for the masses; they take years of skull sweat. This be treason in an age when ignorance has come into its own and one man's opinion is as good as another's..."

It's not modern tech that's the problem, it's the non-regulated nature allowing companies to sell a product that requires you to have an account giving the company information before you can use it, or buy e-books that are drm-ed so you have to have the company allow you access to it, (as with Amazon deciding to stop selling books for old readers) so you can't take "your " Book and put it on another company's device! Or give/leave your favourite book to your child or friend.
Selling a car with facilities that are locked up until you pay a fee to release them - often a subscription!
Products should be openly sold and be self contained and NOT require your details to work - this can be legislated by governments
