@BenRiceM@mastodon.social This whole thing is terrible, Ben. I'm so sorry for your friend. Here, no-one is allowed to mention in court the reasons these acts occurred, in case the jury acquit (as is their right). And recently the group who attacked Elbit were tried for (I think) criminal damage (fair enough) but then sentenced as terrorists, for which they were not charged or tried. It's appalling! (Also, the huge majority of "terrorists" now are folk who sat on a ground with placards!)

@Gaolaitch@cupoftea.social Two things occur to me, being well past my biblical span. I spend a lot of time pootling about with an old film camera making a photos that maybe a dozen folk think are worth the emotional energy to fave... but what brings joy is not that tiny dopamine hit, but when the subject I've found, the light, the lens, my position, mood, timing and luck all combine and I think, yeah, that could work!

@davidallan@mastodonapp.uk I looked for the petition on this, and seemed to have found it, but couldn't find a way to add my vote. Maybe turning off cookies is a problem here? Anyway, they've "only" got 47K votes which, sadly, is unlikely to change any minds. Hope they're successful, though HE is seriously strapped these days!

@mayintoronto Not sure how this plays out on Masto, but when my (Scottish-born) wife started teaching in South Australia, she was surprised when the kids sniggered when she spoke of a rubber, but were totally fine asking for the Durex (a brand of sticky tape there)! We also had the zuccini & egg plant things to contend with...

@Gaolaitch@cupoftea.social The second is from the past, vanishingly rare in the present, when I'm with a person, maybe in a bar, having a simple chat, and feeling there is a sympathetic, understanding ear. There's at least one other thing, also from the past, and I'm not totally sure it was about joy.

@david_chisnall@infosec.exchange Opposite kinda story (apocryphal?) told by a friend some 50 years ago. His dad had been a chemist in a big chem company in Australia; they discovered this film that stuck to itself and commercialised it as cling-film. Dad's mate said, darn it, we found that stuff too, but we couldn't find a way to stop it sticking to itself!

@bosak I believe D76 and Ilford's ID11 are the same thing (one or other of these might be cheaper in some parts of the world). (I use HC-110 myself, never wanted to get into mixing powders. I have enough trouble with Mrs R complaining about my "chemicals" as it is, despite any pointed comments about the bottles of nasty stuff under the sink!)

@petrikas Feels like the difference between a record and art. I guess you could process the JPEG to look pretty much like the developed RAW, but nevertheless, this is the best illustration yet of the power of RAWs. (I'm a film photographer and have pretty much relied on JPEGs for the past 15 years!)

Dear Fediverse #HiveMind, my grandson needs some advice for a (used) #DigitalCamera. He is 11 & interested in birds, which he'd like to take photos of. He's not particularly interested in #Photography per se, just as a means to an end, and probably not particularly careful. I'm thinking a #CompactCamera like some of the Panasonics; his father was wondering about a #BridgeCamera. We have a XQ2 he can use (24-100e zoom) but I suspect he'd be better with longer reach. Maybe £200 budget. Any ideas?

@NunavutBirder@mas.to I moved from #Aperture to #C1Pro a few years ago. C1 said it could apply the equivalent of Aperture edits; in practice results were awful. I then used ApertureExporter, which iterated through the A Library, calling Aperture to apply edits and exporting the results. That worked really well. I kept the unedited originals (raws) offline, but I've only gone back to a couple dozen. I don't think there's a similar tool for LR, but it's possible manually, I guess.

Any #CaptureOnePro users on here? I have a perpetual licence (16.2.6.7, C1P 23), but want to experiment with the new negative conversion features of the latest release. If I download a trial, will it cause problems with my existing version? I would make a new catalogue for the trial with some Raw files in it. #FilmPhotography

@JohnAltringham@mastodon.online Actually I realise that isn't true. I _have_ seen swifts patrolling some fields occasionally for insects.I was thinking back to my youth in Somerset as the swifts, swallows and house martens nested all around, and gathered on the wires in late summer. A local Green councillor has 3 swift boxes on their cottage, never seen an occupant, sadly. My sister does have swallows nesting in her barn, one family, not dozens to hundreds!
