I am feeling sick today so randomly watching Star Trek. Usually Star Trek gives one a Utopian future to consider. Then I remember just now in Star Trek history, WWIII breaks out in 2026. I hope life doesn't imitate art, but I'm scared it might. #StarTrek #disturbing

@eniko@mastodon.gamedev.place Every time the PT Barnum's keep saying they'll use LLM-gen-AI to monitor LLM-gen-AI to monitor LLM-gen-AI…, I hear that children's song, “There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly”. @sinbad@mastodon.gamedev.place I've thought too a lot about the analogy between compilers & LLM-gen-AI. I wonder sometimes if the disconnect is that the younger generation of software experts grew up with compilers that have so few bugs in them? #LLM #AI #genAI #ballyhoo

@TomF@mastodon.gamedev.place This is a good way of thinking about it. I sheepishly admit that back when I was writing code every single day, most of it was Perl. When I was doing a lot of #Perl, I thought it was imperative I actually learn how the Perl JIT compiler and runtime *worked*, as how could I possibly know what was happening when I wrote code otherwise? That led me to get a graduate degree in programming language implementation. 🤣 Cc: @mmcknett@hachyderm.io @eniko@mastodon.gamedev.place @sinbad@mastodon.gamedev.place

@mmcknett@hachyderm.io That all tracks with what I was speculating. Also reminds me of another way the analogy btw #LLM-gen-AI & compilers fits: When I was an undergrad, one professor said: “Every year, a 1ˢᵗ yr CS student comes into my office & insists there is a bug in the C compiler. They are always wrong. I require you to take Compiler Construction *before* claiming you found a bug in a compiler.” This is why I think it's a disaster for new programmers to use LLM-gen-AI. @eniko@mastodon.gamedev.place @sinbad@mastodon.gamedev.place #AI #genAI

@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org Oh, I just read underlying article. I often listen to ATC when I'm on a plane, & I've been flying into SNA for SFC's Vizio case hearings. That mess btw SNA, LAX, the Center at Van Nuys is out of control, particularly w/ small aircraft owned by wealthy people (so many such in LA-area). I heard a pilot arguing with ATC about how his passenger wanted a runway at SNA *right now*. ATC correctly told them keep the holding pattern, & clear the channel unless they wanted “a number to call”.

Am I the only person who, after 30 years of using /bin/ln, still gets its arguments backwards?

If I type: $ ln -s x y

My mind is always thinking: “I want a symlink where x ⇒ y”, and as such I incorrectly put the destination before the source.

I am sure ln is this way in #POSIX to match the behavior of cp & mv. The latter two are intuitive to me because I read it as “copy/move x to y”. $ ls -l y lrwxrwxrwx 1 bkuhn bkuhn 1 May 2 14:39 y -> x

“y ⇒ x” … See!?!?!

In a policy statement¹, @conservancy@social.sfconservancy.org said:

“#FOSS projects should not shun contributors who choose to use LLM-gen-AI systems.”

@dalias@hachyderm.io' reply:

“LOL WTF NOPE. 🤡”

While it was surely unintentional, your reply is quite similar to the cruelty of traditional #FreeSoftware rhetoric — wherein we shunned people for using #Apple & #Microsoft. Such users deserve sympathy and help toward more software freedom.

Same goes for #LLM-backed generative #AI users.

@eniko@mastodon.gamedev.place Oh, of course, but they're more subtle. At my 2ⁿᵈ for-profit tech job (1996), the linker core-dumped 25% of the time. Of course, it was a proprietary software toolchain so I couldn't fix it, so instead I wrote a randomization trial in the Makefile to randomly reorder .o files on the command line until it didn't core-dump. Such bugs are a thing of the past. My manager was impressed at how quickly I “fixed the bug”. I pitched switching to GCC & he refused. Rest is history. Cc: @sinbad@mastodon.gamedev.place

  • Do we still need weak #copyleft at all?
  • How do we deal with companies who use strong copyleft as a bait-and-switch?
  • The so-called¹ “FOSS sustainability” problem. https://lists.copyleft.org/pipermail/next/2026q3/000091.html

As a cisman, I can't imagine what it's like, but this bullshit always reminds me of a time, 15-20 years ago, I was in an airport having a tense mobile phone call with a mentally ill family member. I hung up and was so discombobulated and had to pee, I walked into the toilet room in front of me. It was the designated womens' room. It took me about 8 seconds before I realized. @evan@cosocial.ca I agree with @Ashedryden@xoxo.zone with regard to contacting someone on purpose. But I don't think it's the job of the blocked person to keep a list of who blocked them, which is why I voted “No, but” — as contacting someone on purpose to knowingly circumvent the block is immoral, but not remembering (or even *knowing*) someone blocked you is different. Also, note that some systems go to efforts to avoid telling the blocked person they have been blocked.

I've observed this both with prior generation of #FreeSoftware leadership (eg: Moglen, Raymond, Rosen, Stallman), & with FOSS leaders contemporary to me (eg: Behlendorf, Dolan, Torvalds, Zemlin). … (This is N posts long; replying to helps threading.) #OpenSource

@duckwhistle@mastodon.org.uk You're maybe right that most engineers who were fired and then rehired at Ford were cismen with beards that are turning grey. The right thing for the author to do is mention that issue. It's relevant data to know the demographics of who was fired vs. the demographics of who was rehired. It's plausible that 99% of those fired were cismen with grey beards, and all who were hired back were the same. But the demographics are relevant if a demographic term is used for description.

While the film is upsettingly violent, the truth it speaks is: there are *only* personal reasons, even for capitalists. This #LLM-gen-#AI onslaught is primarily about control. Those who want all this computing to just be an 🏧 seek to *control* the craftspeople. We should use the tools of the oppressor against the oppressor.

That's a good point. Ultimately, a symlink is not really a file in the way humans think of them. (And literally is not a “regular” file under #POSIX).

@collinfunk@mastodon.social I thought @mjw@mastodon.nl was taking about 'ln' too at first but I did mention how my problem was caused initially by what 'ls' displays. Given that there are so many ways to change what 'ls' outputs already, adding one more knob seems safe to me. Maybe upstream will take it. While I'm at it, I wonder if we can do better than a single integer to help us know a hard link is in play, but surely that's filesystem dependent re: whether more info is available. @mattskala@mstdn.io Indeed, what @wouter@pleroma.debian.social said! Frankly, if any script, Makefile, tutorial, or tech support is relying on the 'ls' output with additional options to look a specific way, then something is more likely wrong with those Makefiles, tutorials, or tech support folks' training. You could have made the same argument when '-h' was created as an option to 'ls'. Anyway, maybe you misread the thread? No one was actually suggesting changing 'ln'. @tassoman Oh, I may have missed that; I didn't see it on the front page when I looked. Anyway, I think the approach that #Nextcloud has taken against #OnlyOffice is recommended. As I said in my blog post, it does take courage to fork in this situation, but I hope someone will have that courage on all these problematic misuses of the AGPLv3. I also think we need a better solution in future #copyleft licenses. @nextcloud @kirschner

@evacide@hachyderm.io Oops, sorry, I missed it! (I must have missed it when I read and then maybe searched for grey rather than gray, but I thought I searched for beard). Anyway, thanks for putting in quotes, although maybe better not to promulgate their bad word choice? Thank you again for sharing the article!
