@SteveBellovin@infosec.exchange @wendynather@infosec.exchange Having worked for an international carrier I can confirm that the OSS stuff is completely bonkers. Fascinating if you can stomach it, but not for the faint of heart. These days I work in the energy transport sector. Cow farts at 1200 psi and compressors of +20MW each, energy counted in TWh. Mindset adjustment needed to grasp the orders of magnitude 😁

RE: https://dair-community.social/@alex/116977123749133116 I was a 911 dispatcher for a decade. To really understand how absolutely terrible an idea it is to have AI answer 911 calls, I'll present you with a single real-life call: Upon answer, the caller calmly began ordering a pizza. Large, pepperoni. Side order of chicken wings. To be delivered promptly. The only sign the caller gave that things were amiss? She rather ignored the first few questions from the calltaker. Because she was being physically abused, had already been beaten, and her abuser was *IN THE ROOM* listening to her order pizza. Tell me how your AI is going to read between those lines.

@paul_ipv6@infosec.exchange @SteveBellovin@infosec.exchange @wendynather@infosec.exchange The connection database of the carrier I worked at was *massive*. From fiber patches in the DC over splices in the manholes to every single strand of wire on every single Krone block in the street cabinets was in there. And if it wasn't, it was madness.

@thomas@metalhead.club The spam these days, it's bad 🙁 Hopefully we'll get some tools soon enough to fight back against these spammers. The current recommendation is to switch to manual account approval, which just shifts the problem. Tired of working in reactive, fire-fighting mode.

@Gargron@mastodon.social If memory serves me well, my first browser was Netscape - guess my age 😉 Briefly used Mozilla and Opera but Firefox has been my dominant browser after Netscape ever since. I'm not liking certain decisions within the Mozilla group, including the AI hype, but so far I'm sticking to it.

@Gargron Darn, the cherry blossoms mugs were sold out between adding one to my cart and proceeding to checkout :(

Two questions:

  • will the big plushy become available again?
  • would it be a practically possible option to buy & pay merch in the shop and pick it up at eg FOSDEM instead of having it shipped?

Since the shop is likely operated by an external party, the latter option might be tricky.

@janrosenow@mastodon.energy Estimations state that consumption of natural gas goes to the power sector (45%), fertilizer sector (35%) and others (20%). It's the 2nd sector that triggers me, as ~80% of the gas there is used to make ammonia (using gas as a source for hydrogen) and eventually fertilizer. This (and certain other chemical processes) are extremely hard to electrify. (cont.d)

@janrosenow@mastodon.energy Green hydrogen and ammonia are the latest magic words to tackle those, but they require vast amounts of (green) electricity while conversion efficiency is still subpar. Making green electricity, converting that to green hydrogen to convert that into green heat (essential part of most or many processes) is an idiotic plan if the storage & transportation cost savings of hydrogen don't outweigh the conversion cost + storage & transportation cost of electricity. @janrosenow@mastodon.energy To conclude: yes, a lot of fossil energy is currently wasted and large gains can be made there. While replacing it with renewable energy (that essentially boils down to electricity) might be technically possible, conversion losses are so gigantic that in reality it's not (yet!) feasible. Unfortunately, things aren't as evident or easy as they seem 😟 We need to drastically re-invent habits and processes that have been in development for +100 years. That won't happen soon. (end)

@janrosenow@mastodon.energy First of all I'd like to state that I'm not here to refute or argue with your hypothesis (even though I have my reservations), just to share my own thoughts and concerns. Firstly I'm baffled by the vast amount of rejected energy in the diagram (mostly waste heat) and I assume the industry has or will take measures to recuperate the majority of that. Secondly the amount of natural gas and petroleum going to industry seems way underestimated compared to the other targets. (cont.d)
