The blue flowering Salvia nemorosa 'Ostfriesland' are doing particularly well this year, their flowers have already lasted a long time. I love the combination of the Salvia with the fluffy Stipa tenuissima ‘Ponytail'.

Echinacea purpurea, Gaura, Verbena hastata, Verbena bonariensis, ornamental grasses and wildflowers, such as poppies, mullein and several other self-sown individuals, before the draught bleached lawn give this border a meadow or prairie-like appearance.

In the midst of a Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Mariesii Lilacina’ grows a self-sown Achillea, maybe Yarrow, hard to know and very difficult to spot. Their flowers are absolutely identical in colour. Even their flower heads are similar in shape. Is this a case of perfect colour harmony or plant intelligence using colour as camouflage?

Previously, a small part of the garden by the side of the house was only grass, a tree, a few shrubs and hedging to the side and back - and it was a bit unloved.
Since the transformation, the distinction between inside and outdoors has been blurred. Sitting in the living room you can now not be quite certain where you are. The garden seems to be intent on coming into the house.

In Austria and probably other German speaking countries these are called Barbarazweigerl. Barbara referring to St. Barbara and Zweigerl meaning twigs. Typically, the cuttings come from fruit trees. I have used wild cherry and Forsythia, both also traditional. They come in on St. Barbara’s day (4 December) and should flower by around Christmas. Mine never do, they have only just started to flower a couple of days ago. Admittedly, not exactly impressive but I have found a few ideas for how to help them to do better next year. ‣ Upright. The photograph for February is a street scene observed in Steyr, Upper Austria, in 1982 (around this time of the year) - when I was still very young, the world was full of endless possibilities and the future was far, far away. First sighting of a pair of ducks this year. I had seen the male and the female earlier but today is the first time that I saw them together. I approached carefully to say 'hello' and supply a little more breakfast, expecting them to be shy initially. They weren't - both were supremely relaxed with me and confident. They are also used to me pointing the camera at them. Catkins on a Salix gracilistyla Mount Aso. The catkins are produced in spring before the leaves.
I moved this shrub a couple of years ago from an area, where it was not doing well. It is meant to grow up to three metres tall but is still tiny, probably on account of its hard start in life.

@EVDHmn@ecoevo.social Scrub and chop potatoes, perhaps 1 kg or so. Leave the skin on. Sauté onion and garlic with cumin or caraway seeds. Add herbs of choice (oregano, marjoram, lovage - best herb for potato soup, savoury, ...) and continue to cook for a minute or so. Add (hot) water to cover. Gently bubble until potatoes are soft, uncovered. When done, let go cold, smash or blitz. I like mine not completely smooth. Reheat and serve. A dollop of Greek natural yoghurt or soured cream works well with it, as does fresh parsley.
