@justbob@kolektiva.social does the "ban all AI" include people using AI to translate posts for their own consumption? OCR/image description to make up for people not putting alt text? I assume you include any bot account, even self labelled, even providing a useful service, if it's AI powered? When you say *all* i have to ponder, and ended up voting "allow", that doesn't mean all is fair, i do understand cracking down on a lot of uses, but "ban all" seems excessive.

@jamesmarshall@sfba.social "wish" is a strong word, i'm curious about how it "looks", but it would also be pretty weird to have this experience that is basically impossible to communicate to anyone, and mostly people would think you are crazy./ don't understand colors, so it's not something i really miss. (so "No, but")

@johnzajac@dice.camp @croissant@zeroes.ca i also really fear the wrong lessons were taken out of covid, public policy has been seen as a catastrophic failure, both enormously costly on the economy (we still pay the price to this day), ineffective at solving it (i still think lockdowns saved a lot of people, buying precious time and allowing the system to handle the load better, but in the end the resolution was "giving up"), and also it was so costly politically, that they don't want to go through that again.

@johnzajac@dice.camp @croissant@zeroes.ca a lot of countries indeed did it more seriously (being in the netherlands, we had months of very strict, and more than a year of very encouraged remote work, australia probably did it the most, but at a very high social price), but ultimately they gave up, and we'll never convince the covid. skeptics that it was worth it (the avoided deaths being invisible). So i'm convinced the next health crisis will be handled with less precautions, not more.

@futurebird@sauropods.win @StarkRG@myside-yourside.net if she had been away for so long, but well fed, would she get the same attention? I wonder how much of the action is mechanical "fellow colony ant needs assistance, we have resource, provide resource". Though the taps might also be as much about protecting the colony (would they detect a parasite, or dangerous mushroom?) as about helping the individual.

@ikuturso@mastodon.social @mastodonmigration@mastodon.online i think the red flag is to have an algorithm, if you do, you kind of have to keep it secret to make it harder to exploit, kind of like how google has to keep it's indexing algo secret to make evil SEO harder. I don't know of a good solution to that problem, and thus not having an algo is better.

@davidgerard@circumstances.run @btuftin@social.coop python 3 is close to 20 years old, and it's been usable for 15, most python code written in the last 10 years, while python was serioulsy picking up, has been 3.6+, llms are very much up to date on *that*, and for js you say, well, i'm told the react they write is not the latest and greatest, but it's better than what i'd do. I predict either a slowdown on adoption of new libraries/language features, or a move on from the current ai tech, but probably not a turn around.

@glyph@mastodon.social as a data point, at work people are more and more at "remove this noise, we know, it's still your code, that you better own/don't blame claude if it's broken". Though open source work is a very different context and i agree in that case, at least for the foreseeable future, until we see how socialy acceptable it ends up being.

@pinkforest@hachyderm.io full disclosure, i have a vibe coded rust project, but it's something for myself, that has no security implication, and is not exposed to the internet, if it was, it would be a very different ball game, if i was a company building a product, i would think a lot harder about these things, and not trust the decisions it take (i can see enough mistakes that are not security related, just by using the app). And yeah, rust helps, but safety requires system thinking.

@DBG3D@masto.es @davidgerard@circumstances.run sorry, but i don't think any existing language hasn't been covered much beyond the extent of its actual popularity. i know jane street, a finance firm famous for being an OCaml house (and making ungodly profit), was disappointed by the support last year or so, and trained their own models, but they ar. very much a special place. People who want that will have to invent them after the bubble pops.

@Npars01 @inthehands there are two very different lessons one can take from that history, both summarized by "never again" one is expansive, "no one should ever go through that", the other is very different, "we should never be victims again", and it seems over time, the second one has gotten more and more politically dominant in israel.

@carnage4life As a European who doesn't have or want a car, and does all the commutes by bike or bus, actually, i' pretty happy to see everyone panic about fossile fuel dependencies, and accelerating the necessary transition, apparently saving the future of our species wasn't enough motivation, but paying a few bucks more per week is, it is what it is. Of course, there will be unnecessary suffering, along the way, but it might save a lot of unnecessary suffering in the future.

@jrdepriest @peterfr @minego indeed they can be wrong in subtle way, i find it best when you can give them a clear verifiable target, (like a test suite, or a spec that can be converted into a test suite, and a real system to interact with) so they can mostly iterate on their own without much interaction. e.g paying some specific tech debt / refactoring, without breaking the tests. I wish companies allowed but not force their usage, people are always reluctant when they can't pick their tools.

@amy @lina it was already very hard to catch if someone took some gpl code to use in a proprietary app, even if they did take large chunks verbatim, now it goes through the statistical noise machine, i think it's basically impossible to prove, so while it's indeed a violation, the absence of consequences certainly give peace of mind to many, maybe most, people.

@shibilme@mastodon.social @peertube@framapiaf.org anyone who plays or process media files with ffmpeg, that’s a lot of people. It’s a bug in decoding frames to convert them into pixels to display on your screen.

Desktop: a user opens the malicious file in a video player, or simply browses to a folder containing it (the file manager’s thumbnail generator triggers the vulnerability) Server-side: a user uploads the file to a media server (Jellyfin, Emby, Nextcloud, Immich), chat platform (Slack, Discord, Telegram), or cloud transcoding service (AWS MediaConvert, Cloudflare Stream) – the server processes it automatically Embedded/IoT: any NAS appliance (Synology, QNAP), smart TV, or media appliance that generates video thumbnails or previews

@peterfr @minego and to me it seems the more we do that, the more likely it is that more mistakes / apologies will happen, it would be way better to "rewind" past the mistake and try to branch of to have a history of success, and if we can't have that, we should make the mistake a "lesson learned" episode, where thoughtful actions point are derived for better future outcome not "make no mistake, idiot", but "what went wrong here? how can we do better".
