@Tutanota@mastodon.social @synnef@woof.tech It would probably also allow national governments to mandate it by law, and I'd wager that's the back-room plan. Pass a law allowing "optional" surveillance at EU level, then mandate it in as many host countries as possible. Ireland's venal government will 100% immediately do this, and most big services are hosted here in Europe.

Gotta say it's always wild to see UKians saying things like "King Charles should do Xyz when he meets Trump" as if they think a hereditary king in 2026 isn't equally farcical to cheeto jesus.

You want your billionaire despot you didn't vote for to give what-for to the other billionaire despot people actually did vote for?

@yosh@toot.yosh.is @baldur@toot.cafe The market price of a 0-day shouldn't be equated to the cost of finding a 0-day - the gap is the markup, and you can expect that to be astronomical for a "product" that's only getting sold a handful of times to extremely rich malefactors. IOW, that price of an LLM-found 0-Day (which required expert human oversight anyway) might well be the same, or even greater, than just paying experts with a fuzzer and a decompiler. And the humans boil fewer lakes

OK, new account set up over on Pagan.plus for TGaTC.

I know my Hackers Townies are very forbearing, but I do feel like I've been flooding the local timeline with stuff that's well outside the server "aesthetic" for a while now. :)

And, I'd like to spam a little more on my topic of especial interest - so, giving it its own account might let me do that without worrying too much about whether I'm subjecting un-warned people to mythological white-noise 😅

Like, if you just copy video comments into an SCP report, you're halfway there "The pigeons outside formed a triangle as I was listening" "I was waiting for this. I don't know if I found them or they found me" "Played this at my son's birthday party, the balloons started twisting the clowns into animal shapes" "Now I look at the world through my mouth"

@cstross Don't go there, murder is already so normalised and so attractive for its catharsis. We absolutely must push for expropriation of excess wealth, and a just reckoning for hoarders who undermined society. But what happened to a progressive movement that was optimistic about humanity and against capital punishment?

Follow-up on my Nettle-Tofu experiment: after letting it set in the fridge overnight, it was still pretty crumbly. My tofu game is still pretty weak. The flavour, even diluted with Soy, is still quite strong, and very "grassy". If you've cooked with Nettle, you know it has a rounded spinachy flavour, but this process selects for only some of that and drops the rest. By itself then, it's not great, and I don't know what to pair with it to balance it: i tried acid, salt, umami..nope. Hmm.

Progress so far: got a lime coloured curd, currently pressing in fridge. The yield from the leaf-juice is quite low, so probably half of it is Soy. I'll have to figure out the volume of leaf matter I collected, so I can document it properly, but I had probably twice or thrice the amount of plant juice as soy milk, going in. The resulting tofu is modest, then - if you wanted to make enough for 5 people you'd need probably need 5L juice + 2L soy milk. Not much extra work, but need 2x pots.

@randomgeek@masto.hackers.town I do have this feeling also - thar we're at the end of FLOSS as home of scrappy idealism, and we're looking at the open field where we start the next liberating-tech movement. It'll have to encompass much of what was good about FLOSS but it'll have to be clearly distinct and much, much better on the social justice side.

Christian bloggers when talking about Irish saints are always like "and wow, he did this amazing miracle where he revived a man from the dead"

My dude in christ I cannot remember a single Irish Saint who didn't raise at least one person from the dead, it's just so passé

Look for the guy who does something like Miracle-ing wolves to bring him a king's penis

@GigaByte4711@whitespashe.uk @rra@post.lurk.org People often point out, correctly, that the whole monochrome-dithering thing is really just an aesthetic. Using normal JPEG compression or scaleable formats for repeating designs, like SVGs, one can still achieve tiny sites with full colour visuals. Something about the posterised/dithered aesthetic does grab the attention though, so maybe they're doing it for that reason :)

I wonder does it need the minerals of the nettle added-back somehow - perhaps I should try boiling down the whey next time and see what flavour profile that's taking with it. I have yet to try partnering it with a bitter, which might work. Perhaps battered with walnut flour. I have a feeling a good chef of Indonesian or Chinese or Thai cuisine would know what to do with this.

Anyway - this won't be my last issue on a Welsh Saint - I already have every intention of publishing an issue on St.Nectan, and others will probably turn up too. But, I'm less grounded in the Welsh language & culture; I want to be more cautious. Have I mentioned Brian yet? This issue has a treat, for all the Brians out there. Turns out you might be named after the absolute monad, the thing from which all other things unfold. But don't let it go to your head. You're not the Messiah. (4/4)

I had originally considered Brychan a parallel for Irish Breoghan - who Taliesin's Map has previously identified as being cognate with the #Hindu "Absolute" or "Monad": "Brahman". I provide the reasons why I thought this was the case, but during the drafting I discovered that "Fionn" shaped myth, above, and realised Brychan was not the Absolute, but the "Demiurge", akin to Hindu Prajapati. This places him alongside the saints Cíarán, who I covered previously, and also Bile and Tadhg. (2/4)

Happily, this identification has also turned up a few other IDs for closely related saints - Saint Cadoc as a Gwyn (~Fionn) type saint, and his father as a parallel for Cumhall or Galamh/Míl. As to his mother, it's not clear in the Irish case who Muirne corresponds to, of the better-understood gods - so, comparatively, I'm not sure who Gwladys corresponds to in "big picture" goddess sense either. She's Muirne, or Apollo's mother Leto: a goddess whose role seems fully maternal in nature. (3/4)

@baldur Code Quality as an Aesthetic rather than an Attribute. It's "quality" if there are a lot of capitalised constants, and deeply nested calls to methods of objects broken out into lots of files. It's "quality" if the docstrings are longer than the code (easy when you're breaking a single function's job into a bunch of tail-called single-use methods). That's what Enterprise Software looks like. Now That's What I Call Code Quality!

@GigaByte4711@whitespashe.uk @rra@post.lurk.org In my own unscientific noodling with posterisation I found that for *some* kinds of image it does provide a large compression benefit, but it wasn't worth being so strict that you'd notice much. E.g., a photo of a page of handwriting responded very well because there were many horizontal lines of nearly-white - even light posterisation reduced large sections of the image to the same shade of white and compressed them well. When the pixels aren't contiguous, less benefit.

Who knows? :) Lugh did have at least two wives, what's one more.. https://buttondown.com/godsandcroziers/archive/mar-17th-patrick-lugh-lugaid-purusha-cosmic-man/

St. Patrick (the character) is Lugh.. but he's also Lugaid: the related cosmic "book-end" character who prefigures the ages and arrives again later to close them out.
