bridged (but skeptical) at:
watching:
crows
cohabitating with:
feral cats
they're showing the matrix movies on broadcast television locally and I've been watching tonight while I fold laundry
and I've got to say, it's remarkable to me that the effective altruism/AI/tech bullshit crowd watched these films and decided, you know what we want
you know what's the best move
it's to get in early on the evil slaver robots side of things

hey US folks
if you aren't seeing law enforcement/right wing infiltrators in the progressive spaces you frequent
it's not because they aren't there
this public service announcement brought to you by what's certainly starting to look to me like a coordinated infiltration campaign in western Oregon and Washington
be thoughtful out there, and aware of your history

oh, this is REALLY good news, both for @ProPublica@newsie.social and @propublicaguild@union.place AND for every one of us who has ever relied on them to tell the truth about what happened to us
congratulations and I hope this means good things for all involved

my kid has bought a used Dell enterprise laptop at university surplus and installed Linux Mint on it
we're currently trying to figure out which battery it takes so we can order a replacement (there are two options, one is 3 cells and one is 4)
anyhow fedi levels are like 94% and rising in the household at this time, just thought y'all should know

@brian_gettler@mas.to they only get three goals and THAT's what they want to go with?
why would parents pay tuition to get that, ugh, I would pay for whatever the opposite of that is
we will spend several years teaching your child critical thinking skills and immersing them in a vibrant cultural environment full of interesting people to learn with, which will help them develop technical and social skills for a productive and satisfying life
that's what I want

explaining, lovingly but VERY firmly, that even when we are upset that someone has been on a long work trip, it is NEVER acceptable to urinate on either their clothing or the bathroom rug
we have ways to express our feelings without quite this much piss, thank you

@ProPublica@newsie.social I've spent about a year extracting my husband's retirement accounts from former employers and "investment advisors" and rolling them into one low-cost account
I figure he's saving about 2% on fees annually now but it's not been a small job, and most people (including him) don't know how to take care of it for themselves
this has always been the long-term play on defined-contribution plans, was to create a pool that banks/brokers/managers could shave a little off of every year

in related news, I'm going to need you to reach out to your federal elected officials about this, esp Senators on Energy & Natural Resources
this is REALLY BAD
and we need to see a significant public backlash
because this will destroy things like treasured historic homes
and archaeological sites and sacred places
this administration isn't just coming for our written history
it's coming for the history that's held in the land, in the places we live

in Nate Bowling's comments, talking about open source, "evil," ecological v technological metaphors, and Rebecca Solnit's latest book, which I feel like we should all read (or listen to -- she reads it herself) and discuss at length

building services was not much use
the foresters, on the other hand, were GREAT at catching mice
and I would take them home and feed them to my snake

we started keeping score on a whiteboard but eventually it was like "field scientists 17 building services 1" and management said we had to erase it because it was making other people feel bad
they also said no more storing dead mice in the work fridge, which, I mean, they were in a bag

that was one of our clues last year about the brain injury, was that as soon as I stopped drinking coffee all day long I started sleeping for 12-14 hours/day
so, uh, that's one method, is a serious blow to the head

@Ashedryden@xoxo.zone OMG I literally got giardia and it took my doctor months -- three lifecycles for the lil wigglers and associated horrible pain for me -- before he stopped telling me I was imagining it and asked if I did any hiking or anything
at the time I had a full-time job working outdoors
which was in my records but the doctor apparently couldn't get his head around the idea of a woman going outside
much easier to believe I'm crazy!
antibiotics cleared it up in LESS THAN 12 HOURS

one, I'm a woman, medical people treat us like shit and assume we're lying crazy bitches most of the time
no, really, most of the time
two, while you CAN test for giardia, the antibiotics work so much faster than the test results come back that unless you've decided your patient is an unreliable mendacious idiot, you just give them the antibiotics if they've been around open water

@aral@mastodon.ar.al yeah, I saw the original post go by and thought, as a parent, literally the last thing I want is for my kids to end up like Aaron Swartz
like, that is the kind of genuine harm that we should figure out how to prevent
corporations, the academy, and the government chewed that kid up, and today we still have all those players/institutions chewing kids up, at an incredible scale

the entire "green energy" thing, at least as implemented by private corporations, is much more about multinational corporate rivalries and the giveaway of federal resources (undersea lands) than it is about genuine decarbonization
