When the bubble bursts, do you think the people who grifted for generative "AI" are going to be given a scarlet letter and kicked out of the industry? Or do you think they will just move on to the next scam, like nothing happened?

I suspect it's the latter, but it sure would be nice if all those people who went super hard for the con suffered some kind of consequence for that decision.

@cR0w@infosec.exchange Anyone who still takes Clammy Sammy Altman seriously after the town hall where he admitted the plan for OpenAI to make money was to get the models really smart, and then ask the model. Most of the audience laughed, but he was serious. He was serious. How anyone can believe ANYTHING from OpenAI after that is beyond me. It's so obviously a grift. I think the problem is that so many leaders have AI psychosis that it doesn't even matter anymore. But that's just my tinfoil hat conspiracy.

@gwynnion@mastodon.social It's funny, the Democrats paid millions for a postmortem they didn't read, when you spell it all out here in your thread. But if they didn't read a report they paid for, they probably wouldn't read this thread either. Which is too bad, because your political analysis is spot on!

@cR0w@infosec.exchange When I noticed the same people grifting NFTs were now the biggest "AI" boosters, my warning klaxons started going off. I legitimately wonder if it's now in a death spiral because all the tech leaders and other CEOs have AI psychosis, and can't pull out because they've already invested so much. But maybe that's just wishful thinking? If companies like Oracle start going out of business (which would be awesome, and hopefully some other big companies will go down too), then we might get some adults in the room to kinda pump the breaks. But I am not hopeful. I feel like the USFG would just swoop in and bail these companies out, despite how unpopular "AI" is.

@mshelton@mastodon.social You know, it's super weird that every time a new model is released, it's worse than the previous ones. It's almost like the "AI revolution" is just a lie, and it's another grift from the folks who were tired of taking money from crypto goofballs, and decided they wanted to branch out to taking the money of EVERYBODY instead. This bubble cannot burst fast enough!

I just saw a LinkedIN post from some principal security doofus at Microsoft being loud and wrong about large language models.

Serious question - given that Microslop has been producing trash code, which has been getting worse and worse over the last 30 years. Why do people still listen to them, or take them seriously? They wrote code so bad, it broke their text editor, why does anyone give credence to the things they say and write?

I'm sure it has to do with some combo of money and market share, but these clowns have been loud and wrong for three decades. I guess I shouldn't be surprised that they are still doing it today. Maybe that's the one thing that has been consistent about them over the years? That and being run by monsters.

@SrRochardBunson I remember a bunch of news outlets trying to tell us we didn't see what we thought we saw. Even the ADL came out and said what we all obviously saw wasn't actually that, which was really something. I also remember all the news outlets kept treating the dude who did the salute like a regular, albeit quirky, guy - and didn't immediately deplatform him. Good thing there were no consequences to that, and he didn't take a chainsaw to bureaucracy that kept millions of people alive around the globe. Whew! That could have been a real mess. It's a good thing we did the right thing and nipped that in the bud immediately.... /s

It's Sunday, so I should do an Eve update.

I have been feeling a little burned out from the game, so I tried to dial it back this week. As I've been posting about poker, you might guess that's taken up more of my (hyper) focus. I might or might not have watched the 90s classic, "Rounders" twice this weekend....

Much as I love Eve, and all my accounts have at least six months of Omega, it does cost me money.

Not that I am the kind of person who does things for money. But since I don't enjoy the thing I am currently doing for money, it would be nice to find something else. Ideally something that gives me the maximum amount of freedom while also being fun.

So I haven't flown any fleets this week, and although I signed up to be on my alliance tournament team, but I am having issues with Thunderdome and we'll see if I can actually make it work.

Hopefully tonight I can get a good night rest and get it together for tomorrow and the week.

But at any rate, thanks for reading this short update, internet friend. Whether you fly safe or fly dangerous, I hope you are at least able to undock and have a little fun.

Cheers!

Unless something from my corp comes up for Eve Online, I am going to play in my first poker tournament tomorrow.

Anything I need to know?

Edited to add: It's Texas Holdem, with a single rebuy and escalating blinds.

But I think if people buy that, I've got a bridge they might also be interested in buying as well....

@gwynnion@mastodon.social Yes, I think this analysis is correct. I've seen other people saying that the left needs a person to just make arguments that are correct and true. Like we should have strong labor unions, and people should be paid a living wage, and we should all have health care. These are popular opinions, we just need someone with the courage to say them out loud! There is no "pivot to the center" on issues of genocide. Or ICE. Or any number of these positions the right have taken up. They are demonstrably wrong and unpopular, and the left just needs the guts to say it out loud.

@annaecook@mastodon.social This is a conspiracy theory that I think is actually true. In the way I heard it told, there were furries among early internet backbone engineers, who hired and trained their friends, and so on. I think the way I heard it was some version of, "the internet cannot run without furries." Because at this point, they are now entrenched leaders and experts in the field, that, you know. Anyway, this is just legendary tales I've heard over my decade and a half (roughly) working in IT. Probably isn't true, but then again, it feels to plausible enough that it might just be the case. Anyway, no way of knowing for sure :) Oh, also, "AI" is a grift and except for machine learning typically just makes things worse, and not better. Hope that helps clear things up a little bit, or makes things substantially worse :)

@codinghorror@infosec.exchange Is your contention that this Dave Cutler dude wouldn't have existed and done cool things if not for Microslop? To your question about whether a UNIX monoculture would be better than a world where business run on M$ products, I actually think that would be a more desirable outcome. To be clear, I do not think that Microsoft has been good for computing, and having them be the sole option for most businesses has not been a desirable outcome. I don't think any monocultures are good, whether they be Windows or UNIX. If I had to pick one or the other though, I wouldn't pick the slop coming from Redmond. But what do I know? There are probably reasons why the world where Microslop is running in the corporate environment is the better outcome. I work in security, so I struggle to see those reasons. They probably exist though, I guess. Maybe like nation state hackers prefer it, because the code is so terrible?

Or the generation of people who didn't go into computer science because of it. There are going to be so many second-order consequences it'll be almost impossible to know the true extent of the damage for a decade or more.

Quick update on my first poker tournament.

I came in second place!

Now, there were only six people who entered, but I finished ahead of the guy who I thought was the best player at the table.

Effectively, I learned so much that it was easily worth the $25 I was out for tipping the dealers and the difference from the prize money versus what I put in.

So many lessons as well!

I think it will really inform how I am going to play moving forward. It'll be part of my style, I'm suggesting.

While I am not going to give up too much of my strategy, I'll just share a couple of things.

First, I don't think I've had that much fun in two and a half hours with my clothes on in years. Second, I beat the guy who I thought was the best player at the table. This told me that maybe I could actually do this after all. Third, the guy who won told me he thought I was playing well enough to be in the money, and he was right.

Anyway, there were even more lessons, but I am going to just write them down in my own personal notes.

I think the biggest takeaway is that I can be a poker player, because I am.

It reminds me very much of the first offsec job that I landed. Didn't really feel like I belonged, but I managed to keep it going. It's the same energy, or the same "vibe" as the kids say these days.

It's also nice that I don't have to wait around to pursue this goal or this dream. It's right there. There is only one thing stopping me from going for it, and that's me.

I might fail. I've failed over and over again in life. That's not something that I am afraid of.

At this point, I am more afraid of not trying.

#poker

Outside that, all he has done for the last decade or so is set billions of dollars on fire. He bought and then proceeded to start destroying Instagram to avoid competition. Which, I guess was kind of smart, but also a really crummy thing to do. Why people still listen to him is beyond me. He's also shilling those dork-ass privacy crushing glasses, and people still treat his thoughts seriously. I don't get it. It must be, "he's a billionaire, so he must be smart."
