I'm passionate about biological diversity--always poking my macro lens in the faces of insects and spiders to reveal the details. My academic research focus is population genetics. Because I work at a university that (historically) has been teaching focused, my research questions and methodology are relatively simple.

If I come across as rude, it's not my intention. It's something I struggle with. Assume that I have good intentions and am just not good at communicating that.

@aspensmonster Demand for server-grade ram is causing manufactuters to *divert resources* from production of laptop ram. Theyre not putting used ram in supercomputers. People are buying used because new is in short supply because of the diversion.

I'm horrified by what recently appeared on my timeline. Apologies to all who saw it.

@JorisMeys When you say silly stuff, what do you mean? Like messing up the computer by typing random stuff in the terminal, or changing a lot of settings? Use Timeshift to roll back to a previous state (plus non-admin account). If it's parental controls of what they see and do on the internet, that's a whole different ball game. Your kid will soon be able to get around most anything if they want to. But some ideas are here: https://www.digitalzen.app/blog/how-to-set-up-safe-browsing-for-kids-linux/

@unixviking I suspect it's partially due to the frog-in-the-pot phenomenon: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boiling_frog And partly because most folks have to go to work to stay alive. And partly due to disbelief that things won't fix themselves (we have a long history of things just working). Among other reasons.

@hugo@social.treehouse.systems That's a neat comparison. Something related to think about: the shark lineage and the "all other vertebrates" lineage diverged 420 MYA. Why did one of those two lineages diversify morphologically so much more than the other? The two lineages are equal in age, but not equal in morphological diversity.

@snarkysteff@mastodon.online I see a lot of plants being sold at the wrong time. My neighbor planted a lot of lettuce plants ($$$) in Texas in May (already 90 degrees). They died. Growers are making bookoos of money selling plants that have a 90% chance of dying.

@SutherlandBL@ecoevo.social @joncounts@mastodon.nz @Anna_Scharnagl@mstdn.social When teaching diversity courses, I'm a fan of framing everything on a phylogenetic tree. Along the lines of what @joncounts said. E.g. seeds: these plants here produce seeds, the others don't because the seed evolved down here on this branch. It doesn't really matter which groups as long as you include commonly encountered species representing major lineages, and include some of medical, historical, or ecological significance (e.g. invasive vs. native).

@tanukicorner.com If evolutionary theory isnt correct, or is extremely faulty or fradulent, then everything produced by science is also. One cannot dissect out one particular scientific fact and keep all the others, because the same scientific methods underlie all of them. The scientific method is not supernatural, therefore the scientific method and its conclusions cannot be a religion by the definition you provided.

@StephanieMoore@mastodon.online Building something better is possibe. But someones going to have to spend some money. After reading the link about the alternative, I wondered who'd build it and who'd pay for the service.
