RE: https://mastodon.scot/@kim_harding/116924532050310547 Boggle! Australia is not only passing on free electricity from the sun to people for three hours, now they're actually going to control AI and force it to be some use? Double boggle.

@gerrymcgovern@mastodon.green Have you noticed how everything is "by 2030"? We'll start reducing CO2 by 2030. We'll stop using peat compost by 2030. Plastics will be recyclable by 2030. There will be peace on earth by 2030. (Okay, I made this one up.) It started in the 1990s because 2030 was so far away, you could say anything and it sounded, well, maybe not plausible but at least possible. I wonder if anyone has looked at a multiyear calendar lately?

@Strandjunker@mstdn.social Well, 1) forgiveness can only follow real repentance. 2) So there's no forgiveness in the cards yet, but even if there were, all we've tried is forgetting about it. That definitely hasn't worked. 3) The only alternative, as you say, is isolating the infection from society, prison, for as long as it takes for the perps to understand the error of their ways. (In Trump's case, it may be a while, him being incapable of reflection and all.)

@o1vr@sunny.garden @alexadeswift@lgbtqia.space Honestly. You people. It's a slightly informal roundabout. You pay attention to everything of course, but especially to anything including tricycles with toddlers coming from the right. As alexa says. They have right of way. You signal when exiting the roundabout.

How is this even difficult?

(Admittedly, I lived in Holland for years. Maybe their way of thinking imprinted itself on my mind?)

@o1vr@sunny.garden No, no, no. You don't drive into the center of roundabouts. This one, what with the no signage and all, you drive very carefully around it.

(I couldn't possibly be wrong because this is based entirely on me guessing what I think it means 🤪 )

He has stacks of facts up to the ceiling. So if you're sitting there saying, "Wait. What? Ten thousand investors and Sam Altman can't _all_ be delusional!" go read Zitron. Then go looking for the opposing facts that show it's not a delusion and ... there aren't any. He's a great No!-I'm-not-crazy reality check. He had a good piece just recently on depreciation. You can bet your Sunday hat on businesses taking the tax deductions for depreciating equipment. The depreciation clock starts running once equipment is in service. Zitron looks at the books of some of these companies, and the depreciation isn't happening on the same scale as the delusions. (And if and when it does start happening, they don't show the revenue coming in to cover that level of depreciation. Forcing everyone to use Gemini won't do it unless they can also force everyone to pay $$/minute....)

@jerrej@mastodon.social @wynke@mendeddrum.org @quixoticgeek@social.v.st @JMMaok@mastodon.online Exactly. The "just a cold" stuff applies mainly to people with NW European genetics. Me, I got my reaction to colds from the other halves of my genome. I get solidly sick for a week, plus a near-week of my-brain-is-oatmeal recuperation, plus severe keep-you-awake-half-the-night coughs for weeks, plus heart symptoms (pounding heartbeat, sometimes skipped beats), plus a nasty grinding tiredness that goes on for weeks. I've always felt that if I killed the next person who said "it's just a cold" I ought to be able to plead justifiable homicide. This story does have a happy ending. When those of us with more than the minimum of brain masked up for covid, whaddya know, I also didn't catch colds. (Well-fitting N95, not just a medical mask.) I'm wearing those things for the rest of my life. I don't care what anyone thinks. (Oh, and, yes, re the flu. I've had it once when the big swine flu epidemic was going around in the US. 2008? or so? Temp of 104F for a week, but shorter recuperation. Weird.)

The big contribution of having two haploid cells fuse -- and egg and sperm provide equal halves of nuclear DNA -- is it makes for lots of variability. Variability means adaptability to different conditions, which can mean a more successful species. It certainly has in the human case. But for much of the rest, yes, silly amounts of patriarchy-infused mythmaking there.

One of the several sperm-related problems showing up more and more as endocrine disruptor pollution seeps into everything.
