Trying to teach myself to use https://openstreetmap.org instead of the oligarchs' Google Maps. It's pretty good!
Here's the bike route from our Common Futures office to the offices of the Province of Utrecht, for instance. The direction engine GraphHopper does know the cyclists' shortcut.

In primary school (1960s), we learned that mountain areas above 3,000 m altitude in the Alps had eternal snow.
I'm afraid we're seeing the end of that.
Matterhorn, 4,478 m high, last week.

On average, the Dutch think that 20% of the people here is Muslim (it's 5%).
They overestimate our income tax rate by 28%.
They think the number of homicides is on the rise (it's falling).
And that agriculture takes 19% of our land area (it's 60%).
And they have strong opinions on all of the above.

Major flash flooding in Spain yesterday. In Madrigueras (Albacete), 142 mm fell in just 2.5 hours, killing one woman, while many others had to be rescued. These "DANA" events are not uncommon, but record warm Mediterranean water now provides further 'fuel' to them.

In the Netherlands, we have the expression 'being offered a cigar out of one's own box'. For a lot of people, this tax break is more like 'your government offers SUV owners and heavy drivers some cigars out of your box'.

~426.0 ppm: September average of atmospheric CO2 at Mauna Loa, estimated from daily values. That's another ~1.7 ppm higher than last year.
September is the lowest point in the seasonal cycle, and we won't see a value this low (but extremely high) for many generations to come.

No, the 2026 drought isn't over yet!
Historically low water flow in the river Rhine, where it enters the Netherlands: 640 m³/s now, and expected to drop below 600 by the weekend. The lowest ever measured this time of the year was 750 m³/s.
Unprecedented, there's that word again.

In the Netherlands, the 2026 summer drought just isn't over yet. Precipitation deficit (evaporation minus rainfall) is going up again in a warm and dry September week, ending the season in the top 5% of driest years on record. At the end of the month, the deficit will be ~3 times higher than in a median year.

Data centres in the Netherlands used 4.6% of all electricity in 2024, and transmission system operator TenneT expects this to double or triple to 10-15% by 2030!
That means that the next 6-11 TWh/year of renewables that will be completed, will go straight to the growth of data centres.

Extremist Dutch farmers created multiple fires next to highways today, endangering traffic. Finally, some arrests were made.
Also today, objects like steel pipes were thrown on railways, in 30 different places, bringing trains to a halt. The suspicion is that these terrorists were farmers as well.

You could balance it a bit by only subsidising the first 50 litres a month, that's €10/month at €0.20 per litre.
But then, why not give every household, including those without a car, €10 for mobility?
Or only the lower incomes, if this really were about caring about affordability.

Today, the Trump-Netanyahu mess in the Middle East has driven up EU natural gas price even higher: 77 €/MWh now.
When gas-fired power plants set the electricity price in Europe, that's €130 per electric MWh in fuel cost alone.
Insulate buildings, electrify processes, grow renewable electricity.

As could be expected, the extremely warm waters of the Mediterranean - due to the record hot summer of 2026 - now lead to unprecedented rainfall, with flooding as a result.
70 mm is more than a month's worth of rain in Valencia, now delivered in 30 minutes. Try adapting to that.

And that's just the increase in expenditure. Much of the current €11 billion per year is probably already related to climate change too.
So make that €200-300 billion, for one aspect of adaptation, in the tiny Netherlands. And it won't stop after 2050 either.
Reduce fossil fuel consumption, fast.

The new climate cost estimates are big news today. But then we'll probably kick the can down the road for a few years, and then they'll be back with a vengeance: annual amounts higher, growing steeper.
And water situation worse, if we don't rapidly reduce (global) emissions in the meantime.
