@ami_angelwings@urusai.social yoda wasn't actually a good jedi. wise, old, but also rigid and too personally advanced to be an effective teacher. he forgot the difference between doing training and improving onesself and did very little to oppose the rise of combat ability as the primary purpose of jedi training.

@codinghorror@infosec.exchange a bunch of years ago, i was talking to a canadian who was very upbeat about private health care, saying "idk an mri only costs about $2000". i had recently had an mri whose sticker prices was $6500 and which i paid about $2000 for after insurance. we have really bad incentives.

@lcamtuf i do find that the crates dedicated to atomic file handling and temp files, in the interest of providing a uniform platform interface aren't as good as what's reachable in c. it's not a fault of the rust language per se, but writing a safe interface at that level isn't easy, so it makes sense (and is in some sense a better default) to have high level, platform neutral access here.

dr morbius did nothing wrong. he didn't know the purpose of the krell planet machine or that he was telepathically connected to it. the krell planet machine wasn't small or portable. the monster that attacks the c-57d's crew is using at least 10% of the planet machine's power (at least 900 of the planet's almost 10000 nuclear reactors at full capacity). you could study it, might be able to duplicate it on a small scale for passing butter or harming one person with a knife, but a society that visits altair iv, discovers it, understands enough of the system behind it to make one and builds it at anywhere near the same scale is kind of asking for it. it's easy to see how it'd be impossible to turn off the machine on altair iv; nobody would want subconsciously to lose the power they get from it and even one telepathic connection is enough to use its entire energy capacity. harder to see how something less than 1/10000th as powerful could summon the same defense even if someone built it on earth. dr morbius doesn't want to return to earth, didn't want humans to discover what he's found and wasn't ready to tell anyone about it. he most likely planned for himself and then decades later alta to die alone on altair iv and let a future visit try to learn more, which is sad (and crummy for alta) but in his mind he's protecting humanity.

@Doire @garius given routing number and account number, somebody can just type them into a payment system and take money out ... there's 0 frontline security with everything resting on KYC and consumer protection laws. Check fraud is one of the few things authorities uniformly don't mess around with. That's a reason why "money mules" are a thing, they add layers between people scamming money and those actually collecting it.

@byte@tech.lgbt never thought of it that way, but keeping or re-creating old dev tools is definitely a right to repair issue as much as an aftermarket carburetor. reverse engineering network protocols and file formats definitely count for this as well.

reading it, it appears that it supports an extended version of the ega work register and the supporting register set. brass tacks, setting the appropriate set/reset mask allows an 8 bit write to write the 4 bytes contained in the work register back to the vga. it can write the user's byte or write back bits from the contents of the work register depending on the input bits.

@mac@jawns.club i've had two really great experiences working in person against a sea of atomized individual task assignments. there's no reason for 7 plus or minus 2 people to sit together just to put on their headphones and individually despair about different individual goals. imo most places can't stomach the feeling of being less than fully in control that leads to actual in person collaboration (slack time, less than 100% planned utilization, self direction etc).
