There's a lot of great speeches and lines from Star Trek: The Next Generation but I always think about Soren's speech in "The Outcast":
RE: https://urusai.social/@ami_angelwings/116925778503663518
Since people are obliging so much, my hot take is the platonic ideal of Star Trek (ToS and TNG) is not for adults who want it to be advanced critical theory or hard sci fi or deconstruction or whatever.
Star Trek is Sesame Street for older kids & teenagers. It's meant to introduce you to ideas and ways of thinking and challenge you to start you on your journey of thinking about the world, morality, humanity, politics, and ethics in a way that might be new to you. It isn't supposed to be advanced, & the flaws of the metaphors (Picard not knowing Family Name first, the crew being unfamiliar with speaking in metaphor) are meant for ppl new to it.
Darmok was used by my English teacher to get us to think about the way we already use culturally specific language (Trojan Horse for instance).

#QuestionOfTheDay what's a scorching hot take you have about a hobby/genre/piece of fiction/work/etc that you're into?
This has to be an actually hot take, bonus points if it's unique to you (as far as you know) or fairly weird/idiosyncratic

@waitworry@sakurajima.moe I knew friends who saw Wing Commander in theatres and after they bought tickets they saw a sign that said "no refunds for Wing Commander"

For me it's the Starship Graveyard scene from Star Trek TNG's The Best of Both Worlds part 2 which would likely have been the cliffhanger if Michael Piller had gotten his way and been allowed to make a 3 parter, but still just an amazing way to go to commercial break. The Enterprise flying through the wreckage of 39 starships as the music builds and you wonder how they're ever going to defeat the Borg now.
Also just great music by Ron Jones as usual:

I decided to make up a game where you choose a fictional character for each of the 7 main Fate classes (Saber, Archer, Lancer, Rider, Berserker, Caster, Assassin) based on characters you like from other (non-Fate) stories and that you think you'd work well with.
The catch is you can only pick one from any series/franchise.
Here are mine:
Saber: Mara Jade, Star Wars
Archer: Sheva Alomar, Resident Evil
Lancer: Balsa, Moribito
Rider: Wonder Woman. DC Comics
Berserker: Guts, Berserk
Caster: Azusa Aizawa, I've Been Killing Slimes for 300 Years
Assassin: Shi, Shi
I really considered Spider-Gwen for Assassin but she wouldn't kill, and also I think it would be very funny for me to hang around Shi & also be like "so what's your Christian side want for dinner"
New game: Tome Raider where you have to reclaim rare books from AI companies before they destroy them
Me: w... would you like to slay the night?
My date: you mean stay the night?
Me *taking the stake out of my purse*: no

The other scene from that episode I think about a lot because I'm a Riker fangirl (& I'll upload it when I get home and can clip it) is the next commercial break when Riker initiates his plan against Locutus and pulls it off, and the camera zooms into his face as he smiles and the music builds to commercial break. No words, but it communicates everything about his arc through the 2 episodes with Shelby telling him he's hiding behind a great man in Picard, with Picard telling him he needs to work without a safety net, him wondering to Troi if there's something wrong with him that he doesn't want to leave the Enterprise for his own command and if he's lost his initiative, and Guinan telling him he has to be willing to take on Picard, not just the Borg.
That smile is him proving himself.

@sapphire@mstdn.games https://www.womenatwarp.com/episode-67-the-outcast/ i guested on Women at Warp and defended the ending even though I also wish it had a happy ending, and I think it's all the more effective because the "cure" works and doesn't involve torture
like yes, RL conversion therapy doesn't work and is torture, but what if one day we find a way to "fix" queer people that does work and isn't painful, is that then okay?
I think getting the audience to empathize with her and feel such horror at the death of personality she suffers at the end is an effective way to show how evil taking away somebody's identity is even if it's painless

What is your favorite work/series/art/etc that starts with the letter "B"?
Also include why you like it!
The rules are lax, you can include or exclude "A" or "The" as you want (e.g. The Predator can go under T or P). You can also remove the franchise name if you want (e.g. Star Trek: Voyager can go under S or V).
Include both the hashtags #FavWorkB and #FavWorkAtoZ so we can sort the answers.
You can also answer the previous #FavWorkA too if you missed it! There's no deadline.

We made it!
Who is your favourite fictional character from any work whose first/given/personal name or name (if they only have one) begins with the letter "Z"?
If it's an alias shared by multiple chars, you have to specify.
Please include the series/work the character is from & why they are your favourite.
Include the hashtag #FavCharacterAtoZ and #FavCharacterZ to it so that we can sort the answers easily.
NOTE: you can always participate in previous letters too (A-Y). Or just do the ones you want. Their hashtags are #FavCharacterA #FavCharacterB, etc

@mxchara@seattle.pink i only read the books after i watched the movies, and I couldn't believe how different they were given all the praise book fans had for the movies being accurate... specifically that basically all the nonsensical decisions characters made in the movies weren't from the books and they made sensible decisions in the books

I guess I should finally do my #FavCharacterZ
I've been debating this hard b/c I really like Zorro, he's good & kind & fights for the oppressed.
Instead I'm going to pick Zaki from Rival Schools/Project Justice, a teenage gangleader bad girl who led an all-girl gang called the "5000 Ladies" (which actually had 5000 members) & was sent to private school which didn't do anything. She's recruited into Akira's team as part of the Seiyun Girl's High School team, and I ship them.
She doesn't take s- from anybody & will gladly kill you with one of the many chains she keeps on her body if you threaten her or her friends. & she can be surprisingly sweet (to Akira).
Also she will smack you with her girlfriend if you piss her off.

because i can't upload both video and pictures to the same post, here's pictures of Zaki since in a short polygonal Dreamcast clip it's probably hard to see what she really looks like
Also she's a fantastic fighter with very strong attacks and her chain attacks are cool as hell. >_>
Technically her full name is Aoi Himezaki, but the game and her calls her Zaki and are you going to argue with her about what her name is?
