@dyckron@cosocial.ca Canada should look very carefully at Australia’s experience. Sydney Airport is a good example of what happens when essential public infrastructure is turned into an investment asset. The private investors get the long term revenue stream and returns for shareholders, while taxpayers still end up funding major infrastructure around it. Macquarie was at the centre of Sydney Airport’s original privatisation, and although it is no longer the owner, the basic model remains: privatise the revenue, socialise parts of the cost. Airports are public infrastructure, not another opportunity to manufacture profits for shareholders!

A bit concerning if you’re thinking about buying a BYD. Four Corners got a cybersecurity expert to hack a BYD Shark 6. He was able to remotely control the lights, wipers, locks and audio, track the vehicle and activate its microphone. The really worrying part? The expert says the access didn’t even require a password. And Australia apparently has stronger cybersecurity requirements for connected washing machines and vacuum cleaners than it does for cars. Maybe the rush to put computers on wheels has got a little ahead of the security. #byd #ev #cybersecurity #privacy #cars #australia https://www.abc.net.au/news/2026-09-21/byd-hacked-by-cybersecurity-expert-vehicle-sabotage-surveillance/107139482

To test the risks of surveillance and sabotage, Four Corners asked a hacker to show what China's top EV brand could see and do remotely.

The Trump administration is tearing up 900 deep-sea instruments that took a decade to install and $370 million to build — scrapping the world's most advanced ocean monitoring network to save $48m/year. Real-time data on AMOC stability, marine heat waves, ocean chemistry, commercial fisheries? Gone. Congress twice voted to save it. They did it anyway by bureaucratic fiat through the NSF. No, not budget management, this is deliberate science vandalism — blinding ourselves to the ocean systems that regulate global climate, because the results were inconvenient. #climatecrisis #trumpadministration #sciencedenialism #oceanscience #amoc https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PJczkQZDQhM

Three threatened bat species have been recorded flying around the Sydney Opera House and Harbour — including one 67 metres up, right on top of the sails. Nature doesn’t vanish just because we built a city. Green spaces, waterways and foreshores still matter, even in the middle of one of Australia’s busiest places. Maybe our urban wildlife deserves a bit more room to breathe. #sydney #bats #wildlife #conservation #biodiversity #ABCNEWS #ABCNEWSAustralia #abcnewschannelhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uRoOvjcfM6I

Sydney has just recorded its hottest June since records began in 1859. This is not "nice winter weather". It's another climate warning flashing in neon. Every new heat record is another reminder that burning coal, oil and gas has consequences. The fossil fuel lobby keeps telling us not to worry. Physics keeps proving them wrong. #climatechange #globalwarming #australia #nsw #renewables #climatecrisis https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2026/jul/04/sydney-records-hottest-june-since-1859-as-expert-warns-new-high-a-signature-of-global-warming

Heartbreaking: Thousands of fluffy emperor penguin chicks have drowned as Antarctic sea ice shatters beneath them — too early for the babies to swim or stay warm.
The IUCN has now officially listed emperor penguins as Endangered. Record-low sea ice, driven by global heating, is collapsing their breeding grounds. Entire colonies are falling into the ocean. Chicks that don't drown often freeze to death, soaked and helpless.
This isn't some distant future scenario. It's happening now — in 2022 alone, four out of five colonies in the Bellingshausen Sea were wiped out. Scientists are calling them a "sentinel species": what we're doing to the planet is playing out in real time on the ice.
The emperor penguin’s move to endangered is a stark warning: climate change is accelerating the extinction crisis before our eyes.

F#@K@aus.social off Murdoch. Imagine running a front page lamenting falling house prices while people are literally living in tents. That tells you everything about whose side you’re on. The Daily Telegraph isn’t concerned about Australians. It’s concerned about protecting property speculation and keeping housing unaffordable. Every young Australian locked out of home ownership is collateral damage in Murdoch’s campaign to defend the wealth of landlords and developers. Journalism holds power to account. Ken Henry, the bloke who actually knows how Treasury works, just dropped the truth bomb: ignore the gas giants' self-serving whingeing and slap a 100% tax on their windfall profits.
These multinationals are raking it in from global crises (Russia-Ukraine, now Iran) while Australians cop the cost-of-living pain and get peanuts back in tax. Henry says it's 'socially optimal' — the investments that make sense still happen, the pure luck/profit from external shocks goes to the public purse for schools, hospitals, or even a sovereign wealth fund instead of foreign shareholders.
We've been getting ripped off for years with the weak PRRT. Time to stop the giveaway. Tax the windfall, ease the pressure on households, and tell the CEOs crying 'uninvestable' to take a seat. Resources belong to Australia, not just their bonus pool.

Australia's universities were once seen as a public good. Now they're increasingly run like corporations, with executive salaries soaring while governance scandals and questionable decision-making keep making headlines. Labor has finally walked away from its promise not to touch negative gearing and capital gains tax. And honestly, good.
That “no changes” line during the 2025 election always felt more about protecting investors than fixing housing. The tax system has been rewarding people who already own multiple properties while locking younger Australians and renters out of the market.
This budget changes that.
Negative gearing will no longer apply to existing homes, while new builds stay exempt. The 50% CGT discount is being scrapped and replaced with an inflation based adjustment. Trusts will also face a 30% minimum tax rate.
The government says the changes will raise $8.1 billion over four years, with the money going into a $250 tax offset for 13.3 million workers.
Yes, Labor spent years insisting these reforms were off the table. But at least they’ve finally admitted the housing market is distorted by tax policy and decided to do something about it.
A progressive government should be willing to upset wealthy investors if it means making life fairer for renters, workers, and first home buyers.
Predictably, the usual “tax is theft” crowd will scream blue murder. But shifting the balance away from unearned property wealth and back toward people who actually work for a living is long overdue.

Meanwhile, in Vienna, people are living in good quality social housing for around 400 euro a month. Anthony and Alex’s one bedroom apartment costs roughly the same as the Brisbane sharehouse Anthony rented 20 years ago. Imagine that. A housing system designed to house people rather than extract every possible dollar from them. Australia didn’t accidentally end up with unaffordable housing. We made political choices that turned housing into an investment vehicle. And people like Pauline Hanson want us arguing about who deserves a roof over their head instead of asking who is making a fortune from the crisis. #auspol #housing #publichousing #socialhousing #vienna #housingcrisis https://www.sbs.com.au/news/dateline/article/anthonys-apartment-costs-the-same-as-the-brisbane-sharehouse-he-rented-20-years-ago/m9f46iti9

Pauline Hanson just gave a whole National Press Club speech crying about cost-of-living pain, hungry kids, and energy poverty... while voting against basically every measure to fix it. Friendlyjordies absolutely torches her latest grift: ignoring Labor funding boosts to food relief, opposing school lunch programs, slashing welfare she'd rather give to Gina Rinehart's coal empire, and blaming migrants for problems her own policies make worse. Classic One Nation: weaponise real suffering, offer zero solutions except more division and tax cuts for billionaires. Australians deserve better than this recycled fearmongering. #auspol #onenation #paulinehanson #costoflivinghttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xN-f-9PGAj4

Just saw this brilliant doco on the rise and fall of Kodak Australia.
From a bloke hand-coating glass plates in a Melbourne cellar in 1884, to the massive Coburg factory pumping out film for the whole Asia-Pacific, employing thousands and capturing Aussie life for 120 years.
Then digital killed it overnight. Last roll came off the line in 2004 with barely a word.
The silent factories of our industrial past... gone, but not forgotten.
Worth a watch if you’re from Melbourne or just love our manufacturing history.

Australia has officially lost the plot.
We’ve reached the point where a Two Strong Hearts lyric could trigger legal concerns because politicians are so busy criminalising words they don’t even understand.
This isn’t about “safety” — it’s about vague laws creating fear, confusion, and self censorship. Even the ABC notes media outlets and artists are already second guessing what they can say or publish.
When a harmless 1980s pop song by John Farnham gets dragged into this mess, you know something has gone seriously wrong.
We’re sleepwalking into a country where context doesn’t matter, intent doesn’t matter — only whether someone might be offended.
That’s not democracy. That’s a chilling effect dressed up as law.

It started with Thatcher.
She crushed the unions, gutted the North, handed the country to the City and the super-rich — then told everyone else to just try harder.
Fast forward, and Britain is a broken, poverty-ridden nightmare: record hunger, kids going without food, parents skipping meals, food banks on every corner. The North hollowed out while London floats on finance. Populism rising — because people have had it with the establishment.
Australia’s right behind them. Same neoliberal playbook: privatisation, casual work, wage stagnation, housing through the roof, a cost-of-living crisis crushing families. We’ve been on this road since the 80s too.
Time to break the cycle before we get our own "living nightmare." Tax the rich properly. Rebuild public services. Put people before profits. Enough.

The rise of One Nation isn’t random. It follows a pattern we’ve seen in plenty of other countries.
Their support skews older, more regional, and often among people who feel left behind by the economy. There’s usually distrust in the major parties, anxiety about immigration and cultural change, and a sense that politics stopped listening.
But that’s only part of it. Politics itself has become a kind of entertainment, where conflict and outrage pull more attention than actual policy. It’s the same dynamic that lifted Trump. Figures like Pauline Hanson fit perfectly into that kind of media cycle — provocative, not detailed.
Throw in a media landscape that thrives on division, plus backing from the likes of Gina Rinehart, and you’ve got the right conditions.
This isn’t just about voters. It’s about a political system that rewards noise over substance.

Australia: one of the biggest gas exporters on Earth. Beer tax revenue: $2.7bn Gas export tax revenue: $1.5bn So apparently teachers, nurses and renters have to tighten their belts, but multinational gas giants get our resources on clearance sale. Norway built a $2 trillion sovereign wealth fund. We got “stable business settings” for Shell and Chevron. And remember, 16 years ago Kevin Rudd tried to introduce a proper mining resources tax. The mining lobby spent millions torching him and Australia is still paying the price. Funny how there’s always money for corporate subsidies, tax loopholes and endless population growth, but never enough for housing, Medicare or universities. #australia #gas #auspol #housing #costoflivinghttps://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cy02pzxd4y4o

News Corp's war on Victorian Labor continues unabated.
Murdoch’s Herald Sun remains relentless in its bombardment of the state Labor government. Latest example: today’s doom headline “Melbourne: ‘I’ve never known a city so paralysed by hopelessness’” — painting Victoria’s capital as a crime-ravaged disaster zone.
Yet Melbourne is probably the best-run major city in Australia.
This isn’t journalism — it’s sustained political campaigning. From the “Dictator Dan” slurs against Daniel Andrews, pandemic-era misinformation, racialised moral panics about African-Australian communities, and relentless negativity through columnists like Andrew Bolt and Peta Credlin, the Herald Sun blurs news and advocacy to push its hard conservative agenda and undermine Victorian Labor at every turn.
Yet every state election delivers the same result: a landslide for Labor. That’s why Victoria is the Education State.

The latest court ruling against Gina Rinehart (she has to pay hundreds of millions in royalties to her late father’s business partner’s heirs) is a perfect window into how inherited wealth works in Australia.
Rinehart has topped the rich list for six years straight – $38.1 billion in 2025. This payout won’t dent her spot.
But the case (one of Australia’s longest-running) isn’t even unique: she’s fought her father’s third wife, and still fights her own kids.
The bigger point: Australia’s top 200 richest people now hold $667 billion – 100× the 1984 list, while the economy only grew 15×. Half of them inherited their wealth or will pass it on.
The old saying “shirtsleeves to shirtsleeves in three generations” doesn’t hold – big wealth sticks.
So, is it time for a wealth tax (either annual or on inheritance)? Abolishing inheritance taxes in the 1970s helped fuel this gap. Greens want a tax on the richest 1%, but don’t expect Labor or Coalition to touch it soon.

@AbramKedge I have no idea if anyone was affected healthwise in Melbourne — never seen any reports of a cancer cluster like in Rochester. The Coburg plant used heaps of nasty chemicals though, and the site was left contaminated (they had to remove a lot of topsoil before redeveloping it). That George Eastman story is gold — proper eccentric vibes. The irony of Kodak inventing digital only for the board to bin it because “we sell film” still hurts. Apple helped popularise it with the 1994 QuickTake 100 (made with Kodak) — one of the first affordable colour digital cameras for everyday users. Then phones killed the lot. Ironies keep piling up, eh?

@joannejacobs@aus.social Joanne, this isn’t really new. Ever since Gutenberg came up with the printing press, media and technology have been shaping how people think and who holds power. If anything, Murdoch took that idea to a whole new level — there were times it felt like he wasn’t just reporting on the world, but running half of it.

Over 50 Android apps, with more than 2 million downloads, were found spreading malware on Google Play — and only after users were hit did Google respond.
Once again, app store "security" proves reactive, not preventative. Maybe time to rethink what “safe to install” really means.

@thegarbagebird@theblower.au One last reminder of how the MSM handles “truth” when the LNP is involved. Tiny distortions. Selective wording. Convenient omissions. On their own they look minor, but together they shape the entire political narrative. This is how propaganda works in modern Australia. Not with one giant lie, but with a thousand little ones. #auspol https://x.com/ChristyDanFan/status/2054451472109318459?s=20

Bless the Murdoch tabloids and their biased shite. How did they react when Tony Abbott and the Liberal Party broke major election promises? They praised it. Here is a reminder. Enjoy! Also, cry me a river!

@Ex_spurt@aus.social The richest woman in Australia has nothing beyond a high school certificate and daddy's billions... yet somehow she's strutting around as 'Dr Gina Rinehart'. Must be a PhD in bullshitting from the University of Self-Promotion (honorary, of course — the only kind she could get).

A 700 km fracked gas export pipeline is being proposed across the NT, with concerns it could impact land, water and the climate. If you think Australians should have a say before another major fossil fuel project goes ahead, please add your name to this petition. #climate #fracking #nt #environment #australia https://www.lockthegate.org.au/nt_fracking_export_pipeline
