OHW-Hacker, software engineer, silly goober, cat mum

Very passionate about learning and building, *will argue with anyone about the value of knowing things in software engineering*

I think u cool if you:
- love animals
- build cool shit or wanna build cool shit
- value function over form
- keep things stupidly simple
- are a tattoo enjoyer like myself
- enjoy a little bit of punk rock
- are respectful towards others unless they give you an ironclad reason not to

Feel free to fuck off if you:
- treat LLMs as "co-authors", " collaborators", or anything sentient in general
- use LLMs heavily in software development on purpose, by choice
- advocate for the continuing anti-intellectualism in our industry ("you don't need to know how it works under the hood" and the like)
- are a nazi
- are transphobic, queerphobic, anything xenophobic really
- don't show nuance
- generally, if you're a piece of shit or treat generative AI as more than it actually is

Will post about random shit living in my head rent-free, and our cat Giotto. Serious, tech stuff usually ends up at @lucy@cfn.social instead.

Free Kongo, free Kurdistan und free Gaza!

cfn.social is still down, so I'll make that update here: The accessories I teased about are being manufactured rn and should be shipped to me soon! These are gonna be pretty fun to wear and customize, and they're gonna be super affordable too! Once they're here, I'm gonna post photos!right now, the scarlet-8088 schematics are done, and I already set up the layout with the dimensions, ports and mounting holes spec-compliant. I still need to route everything and then test. It's gonna be fun to tinker around with, and I'm already excited to make all kinds of weird little demos on it!

Be careful on how you treat other people. You might actually be part of the problem. Part of the reason why everything is the way that it is now. It isn't my problem anymore. You go figure it out. I'm gonna just try to enjoy life for a little bit before it eventually all goes to shit. At the very least, I've tried. The sad thing is, that it comes from everywhere, even people who are actually complaining about the same problems you try to fix. 3/3

Anyhow, none of them have any idea how LLMs actually work or what happens under the hood, so it seems complaining to maintainers is all that actually happened. So i started researching and testing things to prevent LLMs from actually taking our shit. You know, actually *do* something about it instead of sitting around complaining and pouting like everyone else did. And that's how cyanide began. Most of the time I spent on was actually figuring out how I could make the content of the generated websites accessible to visually impaired people *at all*. And I found solutions, which I have implemented. Yeah, they are ugly, they are kinda hacky and it's a little bit less convenient than with a plain HTML but it works. It's not perfect but it's a relatively early project. The whole development time, I've talked openly about what I'm doing and the current progress about the tool. No complaints, no contributions, no nothing. Seems like everything's fine and dandy, right? Yeah until I showed that it works on my website. Immediately, some dumb fuck accused me of fucking over disabled people, calling me "a leftist who sacrifices them for the greater good", basically spreading disinformation about me, shitting on me, and accusing me of some strange political agenda I don't have. Any actual screenshots of the accessibility tree? No. Any issues on the git repo? No. Any PRs, patches, even a more concrete explanation on what doesn't work? Fuck no, that'd require actual thinking or effort instead of insulting me. That made me realise, that my relationship with the free and open source community is abusive, and I should treat this community like any other abusive relationship: i should quit, before its too late. I gave up. I gave up on trying to do something about issues like this, because it's always the same end result: someone's dragging you through the mud, whether its someone like Lunduke, or someone who allegedly has the same goals as you. 2/?

@KatS look @miki don't get me wrong but any time i've tried using LLMs for my work, which isn't just some fun side project but actual production-running code, LLMs have been way too unreliable. It also resulted in me knowing jack shit about my own code, which is poison for long term maintainability. Since these models are just statistically determining the next most likely token based on training data and fine tuning, without any actual understanding or thought behind it, I seriously can't see this tech being reliable enough one day. (reliable compared to humans, i don't seek 100% reliable in this case, natural language is too imprecise for that anyways. i would expect "good enough" as "as good as a professional in the given field") The other part of the equation is the amount of compute and electrical energy necessary to train and operate such a level, and on that level, there's no way in hell that shit is ever gonna be worth it, financially and environmentally. i'm not expecting the "make job for phone operators easier", i expect the "when i dial a number, it should be at least as reliable and efficient at routing it correctly as a phone operator would be". you can call me whatever you want, even llm denier if you need to, but autocorrect on steroids isn't worth exploiting other people's work or boiling our oceans.

If you're thinking about doing free software, just don't.

You'll get dragged through the mud and shit on. It's not worth it anymore.

Honestly, I get it now, why so many FOSS maintainers just gave in and use LLMs for everything.

@miki @KatS if i memorize every possible answer to a specific test, i can pass too. doesn't mean i know shit about fuck. There's no actual thinking or reasoning involved (and no, reasoning models don't actually "reason"), so yeah, an LLM isn't actually intelligent, it just shows how flawed our tests for intelligence are. To get some actual intelligence, thinking or reasoning involved, I'd reckon we'd have to fundamentally change something in the architecture of LLMs, and use a fuckton more computing resources for a single model, and considering how much energy the current tech already wastes, and the whole shtick that made LLMs (and more broadly generative AI) work in the first place is "we discovered that there comes a point where the output gets better when we throw rediculous amounts of compute resources on the problem", and it's already getting super difficult to run and maintain. Honestly, either you're unreasonably optimistic, or you've never taken a look at how things actually work under the hood, but I really recommend you to take a closer look at the technology you praise so much. A couple things you could take a look at (without an AI summarizer, otherwise you'd learn jack shit): Attention is all you need, which is the paper that sparked all that AI craze and the development of GPT models and The Illusion of Thinking: Understanding the Strengths and Limitations of Reasoning Models via the Lens of Problem Complexity , which takes a closer look and tests reasoning models to infer strengths and weaknesses of reasoning models with all sorts of levels in problem complexity. Honestly, before you make any claims about where the tech could be and what it could do, you should have a look at how things actually work under the hood and have a rough idea of how things work, otherwise, no offense, you're just talking out of your arse.
Attention Is All You Need
arXiv.org

Attention Is All You Need

The dominant sequence transduction models are based on complex recurrent or convolutional neural networks in an encoder-decoder configuration. The best performing models also connect the encoder and decoder through an attention mechanism. We propose a new simple network architecture, the Transformer, based solely on attention mechanisms, dispensing with recurrence and convolutions entirely. Experiments on two machine translation tasks show these models to be superior in quality while being more

Seriously.

Every. Single. Fucking. Time. I've done anything with open source, someone turned up shitting all over it, personally attacking me based on all kinds of shit without actually looking at what I've done, and without any attempt of actually doing anything (newsflash genious, foss projects are foss so you can actually contribute and fix the shit you are dissatisfied with).

Why should I still give a shit?

Seriously. Give me a single fucking good reason why I should still give a shit?

Because I am seriously done with having to deal with this BS.

Hm.

Watching the video of techmology connections about closed captions reminds me.

HDMI/Digital video/TV somewhat broke closed captions, but they provided an alternative. Isn't that somewhat akin to the problem that needs solving with AI protection tools that break the DOM?

Tho, I'm not a tech-bro that likes "moving fast, breaking things", and more trying to bridge a gap.

The solution to accessibility can't be the AI-age equivalent of transmitting everything unencrypted over plain text.

I'm certain there must be a better way acessibility-wise than just have the user have a plaintext html that fascists can use to profit from our work without consent.

Idk, just a late-night thought. Hope y'all sleep better than I do lol

@gabrielesvelto@mas.to this is true, it's really strange seeing non-tech people around me talk abt LLMs as if it was a sentient being, it's kinda unsettling . Still, we need to make sure there's no lack of responsibility for the operators or users of these programs. With the hole story about the blogpost generated autonomously using an LLM as a response to a FOSS-Maintainers AU-Policy, some people kinda forgot that there is some person responsible for setting it up that way and for letting the program loose.
