@rachel @rawenwolf @EUCommission @Lazarou I checked it out quickly and the code looks well made and carefully documented. The thing is, it is a reference implementation. Each country will have to implement their own integration. I really hope they do it well and that they do it also transparent and open source. This seems like a good base, so let's hope it results in good services across the EU.

Did it again today. I'm already 3h into "I just want to add this tiny function, but also a unit test, but also why not restructure a bit the code, but also why not also write some stubs for my next session, but then why not ask AI for some other idea, but then why not use my own local AI in VS Code, but then, let's setup this in Nixos" and now I have 10 tabs of YouTube tutorials and Blogpost. @thomasfuchs it would suffice if the law doesn't punish hacking or reverse engineering them. Too many countries have followed the US laws that basically result in "you don't own what you bought". If those disappear, people will find ways to continue using those products.

@taylorlorenz any free software created by a business inevitably gets enshittified and will sell your data and/or serve you ads. There isn't any other way. The good thing about this one is it doesn't own its data sources, so you can stop using it when it does. But will it make it easy for you to export your settings when you want to leave? I doubt it.

I recommended the Hugo static site generator today based on just what I read on their homepage and decided to give a demo how easy it is to use it without any preparation. oh how quickly my arrogance was destroyed and I was humiliated. It's not that Hugo is not easy, it's just that I totally tried to vibe it instead of just following the docs and doing some proper learning. I felt so stupid for going this way. So now I have a new technology to learn. It's exciting.

@zackwhittaker@mastodon.social isn't that the point of being open source? So that everyone can hack it and show where the flaws are? So that it can be improved. I'm not sure about your experience with apps, but I receive updates several times per week, sometimes multiple times a day. This project is not even in its released form yet and so many people have doomed it already. I don't understand the dooming as if everything is lost and over. You can never have perfect software from the first try.

I understand your concerns, I also have similar thoughts. But maybe it's just extensions for a single EU app, not separate apps.

After I spent several hours setting up a Ubuntu with the packages I want as a docker image locally and running it in docker desktop as a VM playground, and sharing some files and ports between the host and the container, I can see why people enjoy working as DevOps. It's a cool job.

@pojntfx have you found in the code hard dependencies that can't be abstracted and satisfied with alternatives? I checked it quickly and the reference implementation looks very flexible and modular, so if a government wants to build it also for other OS it should be doable but I'm not 100% sure, that's why I am asking if you found road blockers in the repo?
