Imagine where we might be now if all that "AI" money had focused on improving useful deterministic programs like that, instead of on "how can we trick and deceive people on the largest scale possible".

@ChrisMayLA6@mastodon.me.uk Here is California there is an effort by State legislators to end something called the "water's edge" loophole, which allows multinational corporations to avoid state taxes by pretending that their profits made here were actually made in some other country which offers tax havens for corps. I am not sure if Palantir has grabbed onto this loophole, but it wouldn't surprise me. In my work I'm frequently meeting people for the first time and I'm unsure how much info they have on the subject of the meeting. So often my first question is just what you said: "are you familiar with X, or would it help if I gave some background?" It works!

It doesn't "know" it made a mistake bc it doesn't "know" anything. When given prompts that match training patterns of language when someone royally fucked up, it returns language matching the patterns of someone defending themselves after they have royally fucked up. The article, unfortunately, continues to personify the AI program by using language that pretends it has comprehension and intentions.

@markwyner Yes, and for more reasons than the obvious. I have a device I use often that works perfectly except for the "e" key. I get around this by having an "e" copied and ready to paste. Except on those g-d- sites where it doesn't work. (And yeah, I can use onscreen keyboard or an external keyboard if I have to, but when I'm doing something on the fly, I don't want to. And I *really* don't want to replace the device. It works how I want, and it doesn't shove excrement-generating "AI" features down my throat.)

@theleftistlawyer Sigh, I'm sorry you had to deal with that. People really need to understand that GenAI is a parrot! It spits out patterns based on how humans have responded to similar words in other contexts. It does not understand what you asked, and it has no capacity for discerning whether the pattern response it gave is true or appropriate. So it makes perfect sense that a genAI program given a legal Q as a prompt might give a response that says it's it covered by attorney -client privilege. It's just parroting.

@andrew Good comments, thanks. I'm not sure about this bit though: "We’re buying physical, digital, and economic assets and betting they’ll pay off eventually." At least in the incentives I've seen, we (the public/local governments) do not end up owning any of those assets. Which is a big part of the problem with development subsidies generally.

@cmconseils Yeah and...if this was supposed to show how hard you work, it just shows you lack awareness of other people (like your childcare provider). At least in the US, most wage earners do not get an hour for lunch plus a 30 minute "snack break". Here in CA - which has relatively strong labor laws -- you get 30 minutes unpaid lunch, and 10 minute breaks. IF your company is even following labor laws.
