What frustrates me is that people will happily send money to actual harm-causing entities that support ICE or the IDF, like dell, Amazon, hell, haagen Daz, but the purity testing gets switched on as soon as someone tries to do the right thing the way framework is here. It's like, either be perfect (impossible) or be evil, and the evil ones people will just shrug their shoulders and give money too.
Btw the UK sounds a major downgrade from Spain lol why would you do that
Replying to
@kboyd @maikel
To be clear, I'm not trying to purity test you, I just don't understand why people tolerate what I see as far more grievous crimes against human decency and safety, yet put their foot down on the one laptop company that seems to do far more good than harm (see: their upstream Linux changes, donations to Linux distros and WMs, legal work in Right to Repair)

I've had this conversation many times, and right around now is where it terminates for one reason or another. If I may venture to guess, are you thinking something along the lines of, "idk I just think framework is bad, move on?"
On the one hand that's social pressure working, on the other, that's dogmatism and hyper normalization. For whatever reason we successfully cancelled framework but failed to cancel so many far worse, presently harmful, but normalized entities.

Big tent was a stumble, Nirav doesn't seem aware of the political meaning of the word (Nazi big tent etc).
But yes, they dropped Omarchy https://frame.work/tw/en/blog/framework-sponsorships
So right, the other defaults are bad but we're stuck with them. And what happened when one laptop vendor came along and tried to (succeeded, really) do the right thing in that space? We found a Violation and just obliterated them for it, and refused all repentance.
Why would anyone else try in other spaces?

@bzdev@fosstodon.org @sundogplanets@mastodon.social not to mention statistical analysis through machine learning is what "AI" used to be.
Or pathfinding, game playing agents (including npc programming), image analysis, document parsing...
The best thing is none of this is really "AI" at all

@RachelThornSub@famichiki.jp @steffen_heublein@mastodon.green I feel you. Since you're a prof I think you get where I'm going here: framework is suffering from moral contagion for having association with DHH, without any consequentialist analysis for what that association actually looks like (a mention of omarchy on twitter).
Thus we find ourselves in a moral absolution situation, they are now "tainted." I'm not arguing against moral absolution, necessarily, but I do believe that there's no coming back once stuck here.
Replying to
@steffen_heublein@mastodon.green @RachelThornSub@famichiki.jp
Let me ask this, if you don't mind:
Do you feel like Framework is "tainted," and is now "as bad" as companies like Dell, HP, etc?
Replying to
@htugboat@mastodon.social I'm glad you brought the conversation to this because this is exactly what I want to explore.
Before framework existed, how could you reasonably avoid buying a planned-obsolescence? Now one exists, but it's being cancelled for doing something far more minor than any of the other players (and already stopping that thing).
Why is "default capitalism is awful" a valid defense of using AWS, but not a valid defense of a Framework stumble? Cont.
Replying to
To clarify, my understanding is framework:
-
Sent a laptop to DHH (because of Omarchy - they send laptops to distros to help ensure better support)
-
Posted on a blog about Omarchy being an interesting new "distro" (it was exploding in popularity at the time)
-
Set up a booth at rails conf - the only rails conf, mind you, since the other one shut down
Nothing they did seems to be anything other than capitalists doing capitalism.
Replying to
@htugboat@mastodon.social I wonder if faceless corporations use that level of removal to their advantage? As humans we're more able to attribute behavior to faces - Nirav being a very public face of his company, DHH being a very public piece of shit, it's easy for our minds to associate the two and ignore the material reality of the interaction between framework and omarchy.
Whereas AWS, the IDF, and ICE are faceless, more difficult to humanize the far more devastating material reality of their relationship.

@kboyd @maikel
Yeah enshittification sucks, I agree.
There's no laptop manufacturer you can buy from with the level of repairability and Linux support that framework offers - so why doesn't the "I have no choice" apply here? Your only alternative is a company that doesn't have the same level of repairability but also almost assuredly does something terrible - dell for example donated machines to the IDF.
Replying to
@maikel yup I don't understand it at all. As soon as you try to do the right thing you make yourself a target for crucifixion.
In the USA I get far more criticism from liberals for the fact that I voted for a communist than the trump supporters get for voting for trump. Somehow the problem is more my fault as a member of the 1% of third party voters than the 52% of voters who voted for trump.
I still don't understand this paradigm. I wonder if there's a word for it.

Ah, yup, you're right. That is unfortunate, I wish they hadn't done that.
Replying to
@htugboat@mastodon.social And where does this idea of influencing framework come from? Because it's small? It's still capitalist, it'll still do some other bad things, like promote gnome, who promotes AWS. Or buy its chips from factories where workers kill themselves. It'll never end. Can you stop framework from buying such chips? Can you buy a laptop that doesn't have such chips?
I'm not arguing for you to be a strawberry farmer, I'm arguing for pragmatism and scaled ethical evaluations. Cont

Also, can I ask, have you heard of Expectancy violations theory? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Expectancy_violations_theory
I'm usually confused in this conversation why people engage in deontological override of consequential reasoning - why is framework measured by one small bad and not rewarded by a lot of big good, yet we tolerate that BP still sells us gas despite filling the gulf of mexico with ~200 million gallons of oil.
cont.
@FoodieKenobi@mastodon.social then the best deal in terms of bang for buck + freedom and usability will be a secondhand Lenovo t14 or similar. MacBook only good if you're willing to trade user freedom and some usability for "don't have to think about it" + long term higher cost if anything on it breaks. Display repair on a Mac, at minimum 700$. On Lenovo, at most 200 + your time (an hour)

@jasohill@famichiki.jp @itsfoss@mastodon.social it's the META key, where the windows key normally is. In a lot of distros, pressing it once launches an application launcher, and a lot of WMs use it + other keys for window management, e.g. on my config CTRL+META+2 moves a window to workspace 2.
Replying to
@RachelThornSub@famichiki.jp @steffen_heublein@mastodon.green ok. That makes me sad because I think the conversation is important to have. I worry about dogmatism in leftist communities - think "The Dispossessed."

I'm starting to wonder if it's because of expectation violation leading to awakened awareness of the issue, whereas far greater harms that are normalized don't lead to psychological arousal because these harms fall within expectations.
How do your feelings compare to what I'm saying here?

In my opinion AI isn't as controversial as many on mastodon seem to think. Capitalist company gonna capitalism and an AI workstation was such a desired niche product that they sold out instantly and were batched out for a while.
I also am not a fan of these kinds of profit-minded decisions but I'm not sure what the realistic alternative is within this current system.

SUPER+num == switch to that workspace

SUPER+j/k/h/l == move window in that direction

This is interesting and I'd like to explore it with you, if you're down.
If I understand you correctly, because Framework does progressive things like donate to linux distros and makes repairable hardware, we should hold them to a higher standard?
If so, this seems a disincentive for any corporate good - it seems you're willing to buy from bad corporations so long as they don't claim to be good?
On Framework, moral contagion, and creating selective pressure against acting good

Cause the obvious question is, "what would the statement need to say? What does framework have to do?"
For example, you say you wish framework addressed it. Well, Nirav did post his political beliefs directly on twitter: https://xcancel.com/cmonkey/status/1976493945627766909#m namely support of immigrants and pro-LGBTQ. But, it's obviously not enough, so what remains? Donate? They do, to many FOSS orgs and projects: https://frame.work/tw/en/blog/framework-sponsorships

@Natanox@chaos.social @alerque@mastodon.social @frameworkcomputer@fosstodon.org They could also make and sell watches... ok, here's an article that explains the hardware reasoning behind it. It's not just because of AI workloads, the entire chipset required it to top out speeds https://hothardware.com/news/framework-desktop-ifixit-ram including for e.g. gaming. They did try hard to get a socketed version.
