OH: "If Labor and Liberals got together they could wipe out the Greens"

I had to restrain myself not to run after these people and tell them that Labor and the Liberals are together. They agree on most things and regularly vote together. They proudly uphold capitalism together.

This hook turn box (on Elizabeth St and Collins St) is in the wrong location making it dangerous. The proper location to make a hook turn from is where you are blocking the waiting traffic. You need to be there so that traffic can't start moving before you complete your turn.

I just saw a great example of why this design is dangerous. A cyclist started in to the intersection on a green light, the hook turner was clearly a bit distracted and hadn't completed their turn yet. They started moving just as the cyclist got in front of them and they hit the cyclist. It was slow speed so the cyclist was OK, but their bike was damaged. This could have been worse.

The reporting on this by the ABC is weird. "Teen" is clearly used here to imply that this was an abnormal situation as the driver wasn't an adult.

But if you read the article you find out that the driver was a normal licensed eighteen year old driving his own car with two friends in the car. He ran his car in to a crowd of people on the footpath injuring ten people.

Bicycle Network is running a campaign to get 5% of the Victorian transport budget to be allocated to building out the Strategic Cycling Corridors. All the bicycle user groups are involved and we're trying to get as many people as we can to contact their MP in the next month and ask for this. We're going to need hundreds of people in every electorate to do this to get anything to change. Follow this link to find your electorate and the Strategic Cycling Corridors in your area and email your MP. #SpringSt #Bicycles #Melbourne https://bicyclenetwork.com.au/our-advocacy/strategic-cycling-corridor/

A kid asking on /r/melbourne about how to use a train station.

I wonder how many people don't use public transport simply because nobody showed them how to use it as a kid, then they started driving, and they never felt comfortable asking later in life.

The 'Wheel Sisters' is a Merri-bek program teaching women to ride bicycles in Glenroy and Fawkner. It's been running for 3 years and has taught ~90 adult women (largely Muslim women) bike riding and road confidence skills. It's such a great program for the confidence, independence, skills, social connection and joy that it provides. But most of those women aren't riding for their daily travel, they're just doing recreational group rides on the few bits of safe infrastructure and some quiet streets. Which is very understandable because riding around Glenroy and Fawkner is often scary and unpleasant, probably doubly so if you're a women wearing a hijab on a bicycle. They need infrastructure. https://zerocarbonmerri-bek.org.au/wheel-sisters

I'm currently looking for work. I've been a software developer for 14yrs mainly working in small start-ups that make a webapp product (Ruby, Typescript, React) where I wear a lot of hats (support, devops, development, mentoring, and telling you that all the problems you're having is because your microservice architecture is over-engineered and insecure).
I'd like to work on something actually useful to people and I'd be less concerned about what I'm paid if I did.
Something that I'm less likely to burnout on would be great.

The AI slop phenomenon has really put me off so I've been thinking about changing careers, although I'm not sure what I'd do yet

"Public transport free for another month, then half-price until 2027"

A better cost-of-living policy would be expanding public transport so more people can use it and more people can make permanent choices that reduce their transport costs over the longer term.

The major cost of a car is in the having of the car; it's insurance, registration, depreciation, maintenance, garage etc.

Enabling a family to go from having two cars to only 1 car is a huge long term difference to their budget.

The $400 million this is costing could be spent on a lot of buses.

"The car registration rebate is expected to cost the government about $750 million in foregone revenue."

They could build most of the Strategic Cycling Corridors for that.

Or upgrade 70% of the remaining inaccessible tram stops to be accessible tram stops.

There is always enough money when they want to do something.

A 71yr old women was hit-and-run while crossing Sydney Rd (near Barkly St) yesterday.

Police are yet to locate the driver but have CCTV footage of them.

Sydney Rd is a major shopping street where people need to access shops on both sides of the street. This women was crossing 100m from the nearest southern pedestrian crossing and 150m from the nearest northern crossing.

Sydney Rd is busy and difficult to cross because there is no space in the middle to safely wait. When I cross I wait a long time for both ways to be clear or for traffic to backup.

For a 71yr old this isn't possible because it requires that you can move pretty fast.

The fact that it's 40km/h is probably what prevented this crash from being instantly deadly.

For such a dense shopping street (there are 1800 shops along here) it's absurd that there isn't a crossing every 50m.

Merri-bek council is offering a $500 subsidy for new or refurbished e-bikes starting tomorrow (4th May).

"$500 off the purchase price of a new or refurbished bike, or 50% off a weekly subscription for 3-months (up to value of $500)."

It's only available from 2 specific stores and a limited range of bicycles.

The cheapest new bike under the scheme is the Veloomi Daily at $2199

I talked to so many people at the Glenroy Festival that either want to ride, used to ride, or only ride a little bit that would love to ride more but don't feel safe. I spoke to someone from Germany that rode a bicycle all the time in Germany but said "the bicycle infrastructure in Melbourne is terrible". Bicycle infrastructure in Glenroy gets neglected because people on the council think it's somehow different to Brunswick, that nobody rides or wants to ride, and that it's too low density to ride there anyway. But Glenroy is one of the places that would benefit the most from good cycling infrastructure. Glenroy doesn't have any trams, infrequent buses and the gap between train stations is greater making access to public transport more difficult on foot. But everywhere in Glenroy is only ~2km from a train station and Glenroy still has multiple local shopping strips so everyone is still within a 10min ride of shops. Glenroy, Hadfield, Fawkner are all optimally laid out for bicycles to be the best mode of transport but the lack of infrastructure and attitude of motorists in the area make cycling stressful. Lots of people in oversized utes being aggressive. Running more frequent buses is expensive and can seem hard to justify in an area where most people drive and where it's low density enough that ridership would still be low. Bicycle infrastructure is really cheap in comparison and doesn't require any operational costs, very few people need to actually use it for it to be worth building.

RE: @jakecoppinger@mastodon.social

We should be rolling out lots of quick build popup protected bike lanes again.

Every primary school child is within a short bicycle ride of their school, most secondary school kids are too.

A huge number of people are within a short bike ride of a train station, even in the outer new developments.

Quick build bike lanes are stupidly cheap to build and even cheaper if they're provided via quick build modal filters on local streets.

Every other intervention to address the oil crisis is a staggeringly expensive ongoing cost that build doesn't actually build any kind of resilience and just pushes the problem down the...ughh...road.

RE: https://aus.social/@kattekrab/116861965032683503 One of the less recognised pollution related to cars is light pollution. Cars require a lot of street lighting that is on all night and the urban sprawl that cars encourage means there needs to be a lot more area with bright street lights. Large LED billboards are only there to advertise to people driving past at high speed in cars at night. #CarsRuinCities

It looks like I left before Victoria Police arrested a disabled person, assaulted a 79yr old man (A guy I know called Bob) without any reason, and then punched and pepper sprayed the person that prevented the cops from punching Bob. You can see the cop rush at Bob at 1:10 in the video from 5m away and push him on to the road. It would be funny if it wasn't going to result in large numbers of people dying.

Australia has the wealth to buy oil at any price. We'll be still using tax payer money to subsidise Ford Ranger drivers so they can keep driving even at $5/L.

But people in places with less wealth are going to have economic collapse and famine.

@LovesTha@floss.social Definitely, but I'd prefer to have the quick build than to have less infrastructure. Quick build gives you the option of saying it's a 'trial' to work around the doomsayers and the ability to do lots of it over a wide area all at once to build the network. The problem with good bicycle infrastructure is that it tends to end up being part of a complete street rebuild which means large total costs, big risk and thus long complex consultations etc. $100m on a quick build whole network(700km) that is put forward as a bunch of trials and some of it gets rolled back would be amazing.

@gnoll110@ruby.social Gentrification is a process that results from increased property prices. Sometimes this is due to wealthier people wanting to associate themselves with arty low income communities, but it's also often due to proximity to services. This generally results in low income renters being pushed out of the area. The only defence against gentrification is public housing where low income renters aren't subjected to the changes in property value. Making streets nicer often does increase property prices but that's largely due to these being so few projects to make streets nice. You can make streets nice anywhere in the city with the political will to do it. Upgrading Wellington St to be a bicycle street costs less than leaving it as it is.

@Saket@appdot.net @anne_twain@theblower.au Yeah, no space between the tracks. But it's the parking/clear-way ans the amount of traffic that is the problem. It's such a long way to cross during peak times (after 4pm). If you removed the parking/clear-way and put in a bicycle lane and accessible tram stops then the crossing distance would only be significantly reduced and if you added a modal filter part way up Sydney Rd you could divert traffic to CityLink and it would be better for everyone.
