Incredible stories from the early British gamedev scene from Charles Cecil on Designer Notes 93 including corporate treachery and shady figures.
https://www.idlethumbs.net/designernotes/episodes/charles-cecil-part-1

Also at 1:35:15, they get into philosophy of adventure puzzle design which includes Charles' writing workflow: write story and puzzles in separate documents so he can adjust their timing to line up their climaxes (he views making them coincide as the height of design).

@ketan For anyone else wondering: tCO2e converts the emissions of all greenhouse gases into CO2 equivalents to compare and sum up their total climate impact. This provides a uniform method for quantifying and communicating greenhouse gas emissions. I read the post, but I'm still not sure how 6.6 x 2.7 = 11.3 But 1.7 is still an alarming emissions increase factor!

Method from the article:

Jon Foreman: I started by drawing a square in the sand, then placed the largest stones in either corner, then slowly worked my way down. It's one of those works that gets slower the further you get into the piece, covering less space with each placement. I’ve worked on a similar piece in the past but wanted to scale it up, it's also nice to recreate works in one uniform colour to see the differences.

@teamtype Have you looked at the work of Floobits? https://github.com/Floobits They were trying to make a business out of collaborative editing plugins and got multiple editors working together: Sublime Text Neovim Emacs IntelliJ IDEA Looks like the client code is Apache license, so you could look at their protocol. Their website is dead, but maybe some of their archived writing is useful: https://web.archive.org/web/20150319214812/https://floobits.com/help/faq

@stuffjolikes @MonkeyPanic @sinabhfuil And passports should be unique! Travelled to the EU recently and the ID gates can collect photo, passport, and fingerprints. Seems like first you scan your passport to lookup your identity and then the other two to verify it. But I'm not certain because it could never scan my passport. When you first enter EU, you need to setup all three at a kiosk (also experienced many unexplained failures). I assume the 2nd twin had trouble at that registration step.

@Mastokarl It doesn't sound like a special case. In the context of recruiting he said:

"They're going to make a few hundred thousand dollars a year, their base pay," Huang said of engineers. "I'm going to give them probably half of that on top of it as tokens so that they could be amplified 10X... It is now one of the recruiting tools in Silicon Valley: How many tokens comes along with my job?"

Business Insider

Jensen Huang says he would be 'deeply alarmed' if his $500,000 engineer did not consume at least $250,000 of tokens

"If that $500,000 engineer did not consume at least $250,000 worth of tokens, I am going to be deeply alarmed," says Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang.

@icculus@mastodon.gamedev.place @sjmulder@bsd.network The discrepancy might be because copilot.exe (from GitHub) using the Claude model will recognize AGENTS.md but I believe claude.exe (from Anthropic) looks for CLAUDE.md instead.

@dat@social.g33ky.de @johl@mastodon.xyz That was what made me think that it's a joke and that they're poking fun at spurious arguments that news about two related technologies implies a greater conspiracy. Especially the point about how killing Reader was close in time to first trying to deprecate XSLT.

“You’re talking about AI electricity consumption potentially being half a percent of global electricity consumption by 2027,” de Vries tells The Verge. “I think that’s a pretty significant number.”

A recent report by the International Energy Agency offered similar estimates,

The article was published 2007, but it's not clear when it took place. Seems in Sept 2007, Hong took back his record with a monumental score. I wonder how long it took to get four digits? https://www.guinnessworldrecords.com/world-records/most-lines-cleared-in-tetris-dx

@sinbad I had followed a pull request and forgot about it, someone posted asking if it would get merged, and someone replied that Epic doesn't usually merge via GitHub and merged PRs are often left open. Checking back now, it looks like UnrealBot is marking merged PRs as accepted and closing them. Maybe they just got new automation online and purged all old PRs? I do hate the bot closing well-researched and clear PRs for inactivity. The middle finger of open source.

@thomasfuchs@hachyderm.io @bart@floss.social Think how frequently it *needs* updates rather than infrequently it gets them. Like TeX: people take it as a badge of honour to be able to report a legit new bug.

@erwinrossen@mas.to @jeffowski@mastodon.world AI costs aren't just generation. "Training a large language model like GPT-3, for example, is estimated to use just under 1,300 megawatt hours (MWh) of electricity; about as much power as consumed annually by 130 US homes... That means you’d have to watch 1,625,000 hours of Netflix to consume the same amount of power it takes to train GPT-3." The more usage AI gets, the more value assigned to it and the more new models are trained.

@MikkoMononen@mastodon.gamedev.place @pervognsen@mastodon.social I think especially with that screenshot example of a gradient, an artist would appreciate marking the colours as overrides regardless of whether the base changes. The snapshot+flags seems like a good approach and the UI does well to make it clearer what is pinned in the derived data, but still not entirely obvious how the gradient works. I wonder if it would be easier to understand if you could flag entire blocks of data (the whole gradient).

Includes The Sirens Expedition, which is an adventure that I quite liked. Had a great camera that moved on a spline as you moved in a 2D path through the world. PS1 vibes don't do anything for me, but I enjoyed the cosmic horror story played straight but still a bit silly.
