@jenny753@indiepocalypse.social I have not, no - this was a cold search for that particular part number. Caveat emptor and all that, but I’d probably consider it worth the lost fiver to give it a shot

Wikipedia’s article on planned obsolescence reaches for the automotive industry as the source, but the article on the Phoebus cartel makes me feel like light bulb bastards deserve the hit.

it’s kinda fucked how the last 25 years have all been in this millennium.
have we checked to make sure this millennium isn’t fundamentally flawed? can we return it to the factory and get a new replacement for a restocking fee?

I had a whole bit going in my head about how means testing sucks because there are a million different variants so I propose we unify on a single means of means testing, namely whether or not you have the means to get three other people to show up with you and vow that you are regularly kind to others, which would be way more efficient and also prevent the shitheads at the current top of the heap from sucking all the resources out of the system, but I decided against it because fuck means testing.
Means testing sucks.

A sci-fi setting you can have for free that I haven’t come across before: protagonist society comes in contact with Others who are just as technologically advanced or more so but developed the wheel last in the world of simple machines and it never really caught on in usage because they had developed different methods for moving things.
Bonus points if they also think trying to work with so many circles is absurd because if circles were easy then there’d be more of them in the universe to begin with.

Google Drive can't scan this file for viruses.
Piskel-0.14.0-64bits.zip (59M) is too large for Google to scan for viruses.
if only Google had enough compute resources to be able to handle virus scanning of massive files in upwards of fifty megabytes they’d be a contender in big tech.

sony really missed out by being so ahead of the game that they hadn’t standardized on the whole “our rootkit went rogue and escaped its sandbox and implanted itself on a bunch of consumer cds, sorry” verbiage yet. this is called the innovator’s curse.

lots of ideas work at the small town level that don’t scale up to, say, metropolis or larger groupings of folks. but sometimes a small town is all the people in an apartment building, or even all the people on one floor of an apartment building.
scale is a trap.

Tom Morello’s got a new solo album coming out at the end of September, “Everyone Gets Everything They Want”.
Rather than it following the sound of his previous solo albums, which were very earthy acoustic songs to bash fash by, this is a full-on rock album with electric guitars and shit to bash fash by.
The first single is “Date Night” which is about three Dutch teens that got out there and took out Nazis. Talking about the song, Tom said:
I make anti-racist songs for anti-racists. I make anti-fascist songs for anti-fascists. ‘Date Night’ is really a ‘which side are you on?’ song. If any of that offends you, do the math.
He’s playing Nashville in mid-September and I love the idea of going to catch the show, but honestly I’m exhausted just thinking about the logistics, nevermind the finances.
But anyway, here’s the lead single, “Date Night” for your enjoyment, comrades.

uspol, border search, duress password, tangential
So the situation (described here: https://techcrunch.com/2026/07/24/us-accuses-american-of-allegedly-wiping-his-phone-using-a-duress-password-during-border-search/) is a bunch of bullshit on a number of levels, but the part that makes me want to scream is the obvious incongruity of “we could take and search his phone because he wasn’t technically admitted to the United States yet” paired with “we’re charging him under US law for having done this thing” - did the just go ahead and admit him to the US after the seizing but before the proffering of the code? why the fuck would they do that? if they didn’t do that, he wasn’t in the US apparently, so how the fuck is he liable for following US law? These liminal spaces between being someplace and not being someplace are just straight up bullshit.

headline: “Sony’s PlayStation Puts a Nail in Physical Media’s Coffin”
okay, but, stay with me here, what if we turn it around and make removing physical media from their platform a nail in Sony’s PlayStation instead?
I mean, there are millions of us and only one Sony, and that one Sony cannot survive without millions of customers.
take the power back.

@nivex@tenforward.social back when we lived in a small coastal farming town in northern California, over the mountains from Silicon Valley, one of the residents was a guy named Steve. He lived across the street from us. He worked tech in the valley, but had to drive 1-1.5 hrs in the long way to go to the office because we had no internet in town yet; the telco’s profitability formula wasn’t triggered by the sparse sub-1k population.
So Steve took a low-five-figure chunk of that tech income and gave it to the telco to drag commercial fiber to his house. He then put up an antenna mast in the backyard and announced his point-to-point wireless ISP serving the town and surroundings, priced at cost of the transit that month divided across the subscriber base.
He ended up with a few more antenna masts spread around the area to service mostly-line-of-sight customers near there, and a lot of years he’d send out an email letting everyone know that the last couple months of the year were free because of overages and stuff (or so he claimed; I always suspected Steve was doing it as a holiday gift to the families in town that were by and large very underprivileged compared to his family).
Eventually Comcast figured out that they couldn’t afford to not secure the customer base in this little area, once he’d established that there was one, and they swooped in with trucks and wired the town for coax quick fast.
But Steve kept running his thing, at least as long as we lived there. Provided email and web hosting space for each account, too, and would absolutely jump through hoops for my shenanigans along the way.
Had it been an incorporated township or what have you he’d probably have been stopped by some commission or another, but as we fell under the county and had 0.05% of the population of the county, the county commissioners barely paid us any attention at all unless we were bugging them about something (road washed out three weeks ago, y’all, uh)
Better ways are possible, parallel systems can be built, but someone’s gotta be doing the infra building and someone’s gotta be doing the social building and those someone’s have gotta have plans to keep it all going. It is absolutely doable though.

hot take: small towns could allocate a tiny amount of their annual budgets to purchasing and maintaining lawn maintenance tools in a large enough quantity for residents to be able to borrow and use them at no additional cost without any real impact to their bottom line, but that’d be socialist or something.

I grew up being told stories about how hard it is to engineer and manufacture an incandescent bulb that’s bright and has longevity.
It is, of course, all bullshit.
Light bulb manufacturers are, as far as I know, the origin of the entire concept of “planned obsolescence” and the commonplace collusion of corporate cretins.

if you played Jim Croce’s “Operator” for a zoomer would there be a single reference in the narrative that they could relate to?
have they ever spoken to an operator? one that could look up a phone number for them? have they seen a matchbook? would they understand why people wrote phone numbers on them? would the operator keeping the dime make any sense at all?
media preservation by itself can only go so far.

@t54r4n1@mspsocial.net @mhoye@cosocial.ca disassembling unknown things is my superpower haha (my parents made sure to instill in me a strong “you have to also learn how to put it back together” value) - I generally recommend starting by finding a way to access something you know uses electricity (say, the digital clock panel that lots of ovens have these days) - start pulling screws off behind that until you’ve removed enough to get access to the back of that panel, then see where the wires go, removing screws (and keeping the separated by where you removed them from using whatever method works for you) as you go, and keeping written notes about your disassembly steps if it’s particularly convoluted so you can follow them backwards during the aforementioned reassembly steps.

old enough to remember when components in a living room entertainment center were best when they stayed out of the way of the entertaining as much as they could. you knew you had a great user interface for a component when the interface itself disappeared from the user’s standpoint; the user is interacting directly with the media, not the device(s).
now, of course, no interface is ever done, nothing cannot have a few more bells and whistles and toggles and fields to fill and suggestions to distract a user from the very thing they wanted to accomplish.
if anyone needs me, I’ll be in the yard, shaking my fist at the sky.
