I learned about THERAC-25 in college. I was also in college when 9/11 happened, and the PATRIOT Act was passed. This might give some insight as to why I am the way I am today.

We've known for decades that binary protocols are less prone to a plethora of issues (not the least of which, security) compared to text based protocols. This was the main impetus for the creation of HTTP/2. So it still irks me that Varlink comes along and says "lol let's put a JSON parser in everything". I mean, c'mon, you could at least use CBOR!

@FoxVK@mastodon.sandwich.net I respectfully disagree. To start over would be to throw away the years it has taken to get the #IPv6 stack tested and integrated into countless operating systems. After every talk I have given at a conference nearly everyone who speaks with me afterward says it was less difficult than they anticipated. IPv6 is no less confusing than any other protocol. It is just different than the IPv4 some people are used to. IPv6 is practical today. I already use it on my mobile to communicate with servers running at my house without any extra layers. The solution is not to start over. The solution is to finish the job.

Wherein I get snarky with a support bot:

Me:
When will you be making linktr.ee available on IPv6?

Linktree Support joined the conversation
I don't have any information about IPv6 support for linktr.ee in our knowledge base, so I can't give you a timeline or details on this. I've passed your question to our team, who will follow up with you directly.

Jem joined the conversation
Hello! Thank you so much for reaching out with your question about when Linktree will be available on IPv6. At the moment, Linktree has not yet announced a public timeline for full, native IPv6 support on its main domains. Currently, the platform uses IPv4 connections along with Content Delivery Network (CDN) routing to deliver its services. You can find more details on the Linktree Homepage. If you have any other questions, please don’t hesitate to ask. We’re here to help!

Me:
Hello! Thank you so much for the same non-answer I get from every company I have asked this question of for the last 15 years. I cannot, in fact, find more details about this on the Linktree Homepage. If you have any actual concrete information, please don't hesitate to provide it.

This will likely be incoherent. The beginnings of ideas, hopefully some of which will resonate with someone and we can grow it from there. Starlink is convenient, but every time I see it mentioned I can't help but think of the evilness of Elon Musk and how close we are to Kessler Syndrome thanks to the irresponsible mismanagement of orbit (h/t @sundogplanets@mastodon.social ). We have the technology to improve terrestrial networks in traditionally less connected places. It would take work. We would probably need to change the way a lot of people think about the Internet. My first ISP was a volunteer-run rack of dial-up modems colocated at the local university. It was a community effort. We could build community owned networks again. I think. For all I know it's been made illegal in service of capitalism. But from a technical standpoint it's a matter of deploying gear and educating people. Some of these new networks may not look pretty compared to what we're used to, but dangit they'd work. I have some of this knowledge locked up in my noggin' that I'd love to share with people. I don't know how to power past the inertia though. We seem to be locked into this notion that Big Corporations are the only ones who can save us. Can we really start over and build a compassionate network for the people, or is everything we have going to rot?

A friend sent me a link to jolla . com last week. I stopped reading after the first mention of "AI". He implored me to continue reading. I counted 5 more instances of "AI" in the first text block and closed it again. I never did make it to anything about the supposed Linux phone everybody is talking about.

Dear Humanweb,

I'm hosting a website for a friend who just wants to upload a bunch of music files and serve them. It's currently using Apache's autoindex with some basic styling. I'm in the process of migrating to nginx, whose autoindex module is less flexible. (Yes, I know about fancyindex, but I don't really want to install it for one site.)

Is there a simple little program/script/pony that will iterate over a bunch of MP3s in a directory, read their metadata, and produce a nice HTML file? Maybe even with inline audio tags?

UX Wishlist¹ item for Firefox: When encountering DRM media, instead of putting up a banner at the top that shrinks the viewport to prompt to enable it, put a red box over the media in question with the prompt in it. Most of the time I don't care because I'm never going to enable it, and I get tired of having to [x] out the banner.

¹ I know Mozilla doesn't actually listen to user input so I vent here.

@Unlikelylass@mspsocial.net And worse he specifically calls out any "AI" opponents:

And no, AI isn't perfect. But Christ, anybody who points to the problems at AI had better be looking in the mirror and pointing at themselves at the same time.

So it's not just that the wider context is out of scope, it's somehow our fault. At this point all I can do is direct a gesture he is known for back at him: 🖕

Despite upgrading to Debian testing with the newest Asterisk and adding an override to the systemd unit for After= the specific network interfaces, it still starts before the IPv6 (or maybe the DNS?) is ready and fails to resolve an IPv6 IAX2 peer. I went back to the old "ExecStartPre=sleep 5s" kludge and it works fine. 🤡

One minor annoyance with JSON -> CBOR: If you feed it a value like 0.8, you'll end up with a 64-bit (8 byte) float. I'd love to see a type for simple engineering notation, eg: 8e-1 would encode the 8 and the -1 in as few bits as possible. I know there's a 16-bit version of IEEE 754 but the precision isn't there. Not sure how high the exponent would need to go to make it worthwhile.

If the independent, non-slop web has any future at all, then now must be the time for every firefox fork to commit to working together to maintain a hardfork isolated from Mozilla. It's a project that is too large to be handled by any small project alone (and maybe even all of them combined), but one that is too important to left under the guidance of an organization like Mozilla. Without such bold co-operation I fear we have already lost.

The generic name time.nist.gov will continue to point to all of our servers on a round-robin basis, and users are encouraged to access the service using this name.

Except that it doesn't any more. That name now points to a load balancer that is only reachable via legacy IP.
