On Thursday April 9 at 5pm our current resident Clemens Schöll (@neopostmodern@tldr.nettime.org) will share his Instagram automaton, “Artist at Work 4.0.”
Clemens' sculptural-bot will be installed in the MAL pop-up space (CASE W250).
Please join us as Clemens will deliver an artist talk on his creative process during his MAL residency. Clemens will also position “Artist at work 4.0” in relation to his broader practice-based research in counter-automation.
Clemens’ talk will also be live-streamed on Twitch (https://twitch.tv/mediaarchaeology) at 5pm MST / UTC -6.
just know that if you steal an iPod from the lab you will be haunted by the ghost of Steve Jobs forever
It is still fall fundraising time!
Donations go towards stipends for practitioners in residence and visiting artists, and to purchasing interesting pieces of tech to fill out gaps in the collection.
All U.S.-based donations over $7 will receive a thank you sticker pack (including our new limited-run heart shaped one, ooooo) and U.S.-based donations over $20 will also receive a limited-run print made with our newly refurbished mimeograph.

We've kicked off our Practitioner in Residence series with a bang (or a boo?) - Dr. Katherine Guiness is in the lab for the next little while and has a number of events planned...
Katherine says: Want to learn about the long history of media, technology, and spiritualism? Are you currently being haunted and need some advice? Want to learn how to hunt ghosts yourself? Do you think YOU might be a ghost? (There’s a high probability that you are!)
Come to a free consultation at the Media Archaeology Lab with Dr. Katherine Guinness, ghost (and art) theorist from the University of Maryland during the MAL open hours, except when she hosts office hours at the CASE W250 pop-up space on Tuesday March 3 at 12:00 PM (all times are Boulder time, GMT -07:00) or is otherwise conducting one of the following events, livestreamed on our Twitch or in-person at the MAL:
March 2, 11 AM: Creative Misuse of Media & Intro to Ghost Hunting Lecture

a little from our current practitioner in residence @neopostmodern@tldr.nettime.org:
During his residency Berlin-based media artist Clemens Schöll is developing his project "Artist at work 4.0". Clemens is upcycling an old 3D printer into an autonomous Instagram-operating robot. Fitted with a copper-tipped silicone replica of his hand it will scroll and interact on his behalf. The kinetic installation is a counter-automation approach of self-defense against hostile yet seemingly necessary platforms. It empowers to renegotiate the terms of online and social interaction: should individuals be allowed to automate activity against the platforms' will? What legitimacy does automation have in social interaction in face of the artifical sociality of "social" media?

Folk Machinery is a performance by artist-researcher Niamh O'Brien. Taking inspiration from the work of the Irish Folklore Commission (1935-1970) Niamh has recorded with a number of Boulder-based Irish traditional musicians. This performance will bring together the sounds and stories she collected, live harp music and song, and reflections on the role of the collector and the machines of her trade.
Niamh is a harp player, singer, composer and artist from Ireland. She is a Fulbright-Creative Ireland Fellow 2025-6 hosted by the Media Archaeology Lab at CU Boulder.
