On 29 August, people of Iceland will decide on whether they want to join the EU and therefore push for stronger integration with the rest of the European family.
Regardless of their decision, Iceland is and will remain the country from which others can learn about democracy, openness, freedom of information and privacy.

June ends, but advocacy and work to advance LGBTQ+ rights continues. 🌈
Pride Month is one month, but Pride Year continues.
And Pride Year is about advocacy, supporting LGBTQ+ people and building environments that are supportive and friendly regardless of sexual orientation and gender identity.
The EU should require all EU countries to use truly sovereign cloud infrastructure for storing and processing sensitive data such as financial data, judicial and legal documents, health records, and communication between authorities and citizens.
Truly sovereign cloud infrastructure means cloud infrastructure built, operated and fully controled by European companies which owners are EU citizens.
The US CLOUD Act means that no data is safe when stored on servers operated by American companies. Companies like Google, Microsoft and Amazon cannot be trusted with sensitive data and should be excluded from the public sector involving such data.
The most critical European data should be stored and processed on European infrastructure.

One of the most unique things about fediverse for content creators is that they don't need to feel pressured into following rules set by algorithms.
Instead of chasing algorithms which decide which content people see, creators can focus on what they really love: making cool content that other people enjoy.
No race to the bottom.
No punishment because of not publishing for one day.
No platform working against creators.
People here don't care about engagement rates someone has, but about whether their content is interesting to them.
Because content creation is an art.
And creators, like all artists, need a space that is good for them and doesn't work against them.

Congratulations to Poland for finally recognizing same-sex marriages entered abroad. It is good step forward and one more brick to building a strong foundation of equality, dignity and social progress.
More good news is that the Polish Sejm will be voting (during first reading) on a law introducing civil partnerships in Poland. This would be significant move to builld another pillar of human dignity and equality.
Same-sex marriage and civil partnerships strengthen families and are integral part of foundation of family values.
Yes, Poland, you can make it happen.

One question surfaces repeatedly among boardrooms and executive suites alike: should CEOs maintain an active presence on social media? The answer, as with most strategic decisions in leadership, is neither simple nor universal. What works for a CEO of a huge, renowned consumer brand may prove entirely ineffective for the leader of a mid-sized B2B services firm. Understanding when and why social media participation matters, or doesn’t, requires an assessment of brand dynamics, stakeholder expectations, and organizational positioning.

RE: @mediascopegroup@vebinet.com
True leadership isn't just about strategy, but it's about standing for something that matters.
As we begin Pride Month, I want to take a moment to reflect on what Media Scope Group stands for.
At the heart of our work lies a fundamental principle: We want to drive and help others to make positive impact. And impact and equity begins with visibility. This is why we are committed to support LGBTQ+ community.
For us, supporting LGBTQ+ rights isn't a quarterly campaign or a hashtag for June. It is woven into the DNA of how we operate, both internally and for the clients we serve.
Inside our walls, we are building a culture where every single person feels safe to bring their whole self to work. We believe that innovation and authenticity cannot coexist with fear. That’s why we maintain a zero-tolerance policy for discrimination and invest heavily in support systems that empower our team to thrive.
Outside our walls, we are challenging the status quo. We don't just advise on inclusion; we push for narratives that center LGBTQ+ experiences and humanize the stories that matter. We challenge campaigns that rely on stereotypes and advocate for policies that drive real societal change. From training programs on allyship to crisis management that protects communities, we are committed to drive positive impact.
I believe that we have a responsibility to shape the ecosystem around us. We are sharing best practices, promoting LGBTQ+ causes, partnering with advocacy groups and LGBTQ+ creators, and pushing for standards and practices that prioritize equity.
To our employees, our clients, our partners and the broader community: Thank you for walking this path with us. Let's continue to amplify voices and build a future where everyone belongs.
Happy Pride Month. Let's keep the work going. 🏳️🌈
The European Parliament voted to ban "conversion therapy" across the EU. This is very important step forward to protect human rights and dignity.
🌈
Happy Pride Month to all! 🌈
Let's remember that love is love and love always wins!
Every person deserves to live with dignity, without fear and without staying in the closet.
And yes, LGBTQ rights are human rights.
Happy International Children's Day!
This day is good day to say that we should always support children and youth to realize their passions, hobbies and to live happy, fullfiling life.
#InternationalChildrensDay #children #kids #youth #creativity
There are many reasons why I'm against age verification and social media bans for teens.
Youth is part of society and their voices should be heard. When we take a look on how they use social media, we can see they use them for expressing themselves, mobilizing for important causes such as climate action and fair wages.
Imposing restrictions on young people is not the way to protect them. In fact, it's taking their right to freedom of expression and speech. It also harms society as young people very often have smart and accurate ideas on how to make society better.
Another reason is that to verify age, you need to collect ID. This exposes people to risks such as exploitation, identity theft, fraud, scams, etc. Breaches are happening, we saw many severe breaches in the past. Making the use of ID documents mandatory for age verification would make life easier for cybercriminals.
There are more reasons.
Yes, we need to act to protect children and fight against child abuse. There is no doubt about it. But what we need to do it in a reasonable, safe and transparent way that is not cutting young people from social media, or exposes people to risks to their privacy.

Creativity wins over machines.
People can't be replaced by AI.
Brands that invest in their creative talent, empower them with advanced tools, and cultivate a culture of creativity and innovation will create leading narratives. In the age of AI, the most powerful technology remains the human mind, and the most valuable asset is the capacity to create something truly inspiring and resonating with audiences.

Dear community,
What kind of content creators would you like to see in the Fediverse? Are there any specific creators or topics you’d like to see here?
With wars and military conflicts across the world, trade tensions and attacks against multilateralism, the world's capability to address existential threats like climate change is being reduced.
Humanity has strong ability to address climate change and take the necessary climate action. But this requires cooperation and ability to overcome divides and borders. We could make much more progress and make achievements by 2030 in these regards.
However, as the world is facing wars, trade tensions, more protectionism and nationalism, it is more prone to failure. This failure will come with economic, environmental and social costs as it will be affected by more extreme weather, more severe migration crises caused by climate change, and global pandemics.
No country can prevent this or slow it down alone. To do so, countries need to go back to building a global village of cooperating nations, put aside divides and work together to address global issues that are existential threats to humanity.

Recently, many people started expressing concerns and not so positive opinions about the announcement that Linux Mint's team will have longer development cycle. Actually, this can have good outcomes for Mint users.
Linux Mint has a smaller team compared to many other distros, so it means that optimizing development cycle is reasonable step and should not worry anyone. Developing good software takes time and requires people.
Having more time to focus on improving the system would result in better performance, less bugs and simply better user experience. Is it worthy to dedicate more time for this? Absolutely yes.
Software development cycle, like product development, that is characterized by more time dedicated to it always leads to better results.
And if someone is worried about the future of the project, then I suggest taking a look at how to contribute to Linux Mint's development.
For those who are interested how to help folks at Linux Mint: https://linuxmint.com/getinvolved.php
Don't be worried. Longer development cycle gives more time to do better work.
PS I'm not affiliated with Linux Mint team.

Prioritizing employee wellbeing is a necessity. The World Health Organization reports that burnout alone costs the global economy $1 trillion annually in lost productivity, while several research reports show that teams with high wellbeing demonstrate higher profitability and lower absenteeism.
For NGOs, supporting staff wellbeing is an ethical principle that directly impacts mission sustainability. Field workers facing trauma or burnout cannot effectively serve vulnerable communities without robust mental health resources and compassionate policies. For corporations, wellbeing drives innovation as psychological safety and mutual respect within teams spark ideas, and reduces turnover and healthcare costs.
But beyond metrics, wellbeing builds cultures of trust. When leaders model work-life balance and openly discuss mental health, they dismantle stigma and foster inclusivity.
Policies within organizations need to ensure that employees are valued as whole humans, not just productivity units.

They have leverage, profitability, flexibility and ability to survice different market situations.
They can build stronger relations with all stakeholders and make positive impact on society and environment.

Welcome to fediverse, DIGITAL SME Alliance (@DIGITALSME@mastodon.social).
The Estonian Government's argument for opposing the equal pay and pay transparency rules, which were adopted by the Council on 24 April 2023, is not reasonable.
First, equality and transparency of salaries is not adding further burden.
Second, Estonia needs to take pay gap more seriously as it has one of the biggest pay gaps in Europe.
Third, ignoring EU law in such important field affecting lives of people is a mistake.
The problem needs to be addressed, not ignored.

One week and the Council of Europe will be voting on whether to ban conversion "therapy", a very cruel practice that should never be practiced.
Unfortunately, there are groups that are trying to pressure MPs to vote against the proposal. The lobbying battle is ongoing.
You can email or call MPs representing your country in the Council and ask them to vote in favor of banning the conversion "therapy". By doing so, you can help in convincing them to support LGBTQ rights and stand against cruel practices that violate dignity and human rights.
Your voice matters.

I hope that the next Hungarian Government will abolish toxic and anti-family policies that targeted LGBTQ people, violated personal freedoms and freedom of speech.
During recent years under the rule of Fidesz, Hungary launched crackdown on LGBTQ content, banned Pride events, and tried to stigmatize and dehumanize LGBTQ people.
Fundamental rights, such as human dignity, respect for family life, non-discrimination and protection of people from state-sanctioned abuse, should be restored.

In Estonia, youth may gain the right to vote and run as candidates in elections to the European Parliament.
Hopefully, the Estonian Parliament will approve amendments to the election law, so the age allowing voting will be lowered to 16 years old and the age allowing to become candidate to the European Parliament will be lowered to 18 years old.
This change will be in line with the democratic spirit, especially now, as youth is politically and socially active, and very often brings good ideas.

Public relations is not only for big brands, but also for small companies.
The notion that public relations is a tool reserved exclusively for multinational corporations with expansive budgets and global reach is a myth in the business world.
Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) often operate under the assumption that PR is irrelevant to their operations, a luxury reserved for managing high-profile crises or launching international campaigns. This perspective fundamentally misunderstands the essence of PR, which is rooted in building and nurturing relationships between organizations and their stakeholders. Far from being a peripheral activity, PR is a strategic investment for businesses of all sizes, offering SMEs a cost-effective pathway to amplify their voice, establish credibility, and compete in increasingly saturated markets.
Public relations is frequently conflated with media relations or crisis management, but its scope extends far beyond these narrow definitions. At its core, PR is a discipline dedicated to shaping perceptions, fostering trust, and maintaining mutually beneficial relationships with stakeholders, a category that encompasses customers, employees, investors, suppliers, and the broader community. Unlike advertising, which relies on paid promotions to deliver controlled messages, PR leverages earned media, storytelling, and strategic communication to organically influence public opinion. This distinction is critical for SMEs, which often lack the financial resources to compete with larger brands in paid advertising but can harness PR’s organic potential to carve out a distinct market presence.
The evolution of PR over the past century demonstrates its adaptability. Initially conceived as a tool for corporate image management, PR has expanded to include digital engagement, social responsibility initiatives, and data-driven audience analysis. For SMEs, this evolution presents an opportunity to adopt PR strategies tailored to their unique needs. Activities such as press releases, social media engagement, community outreach, influencer partnerships, and thought leadership are not only scalable but also adaptable to businesses operating at any scale. With the right approach focusing on authenticity and relationship-building, SMEs can leverage PR to differentiate themselves in crowded markets, even without the resources of their larger counterparts.
The belief that PR is nonessential for SMEs stems from a misunderstanding of its role in business strategy. In reality, PR is not merely a reactive tool for managing crises but a proactive mechanism for driving growth, enhancing reputation, and fostering long-term sustainability. For SMEs, the stakes are particularly high: unlike large corporations with established brand equity, smaller businesses often operate on thinner margins and face greater vulnerability to reputational risks. Ignoring PR can result in missed opportunities to build credibility, engage customers, and secure competitive advantages.
One of the most compelling arguments for PR’s relevance to SMEs lies in its ability to generate third-party validation. We are living in a world where consumers increasingly distrust traditional advertising, endorsements from media outlets, influencers, or industry experts carry significant weight. A local bakery featured in a regional food magazine or a tech startup cited in an industry report gains instant legitimacy, enabling it to compete with established players. This form of earned media not only enhances visibility but also builds trust, a currency that is invaluable for SMEs seeking to establish themselves in competitive markets.
Crisis preparedness is another critical consideration. No business, regardless of size, is immune to crises—whether in the form of negative online reviews, supply chain disruptions, or internal conflicts. For SMEs, which often lack the financial resilience to weather prolonged reputational damage, a well-structured PR strategy can mean the difference between survival and closure. Proactive crisis communication plans, including transparent messaging frameworks and media training for leadership, enable SMEs to respond swiftly and effectively to challenges. Moreover, ongoing reputation management, such as monitoring online sentiment and addressing customer concerns in real time, helps mitigate risks before they escalate into full-blown crises.
Cost-effectiveness further underscores PR’s value for SMEs. Traditional advertising channels, such as television or print media, often require substantial budgets with uncertain returns. In contrast, PR strategies like earned media placements, social media campaigns, and community engagement initiatives offer high-impact visibility at a fraction of the cost. For example, a boutique hotel collaborating with travel influencers to share authentic guest experiences can attract global attention without the need for expensive ad buys. Similarly, a well-timed press release highlighting a product launch or milestone achievement can generate media coverage that drives organic traffic and sales.
Customer relationship management is another area where PR proves indispensable. Unlike one-way advertising, PR fosters two-way communication, allowing businesses to listen to customer feedback, address concerns, and adapt their offerings. Storytelling, a cornerstone of effective PR, enables SMEs to humanize their brands by sharing founder journeys, highlighting ethical sourcing practices, or showcasing customer success stories. These narratives build emotional connections, transforming transactional relationships into loyal customer bases. Platforms such as newsletters, blogs, and social media further facilitate direct engagement, turning customers into brand advocates who amplify the business’s message through word-of-mouth.
Finally, PR plays an important role in attracting investors and strategic partners. Investors are more likely to support businesses with strong reputations, clear narratives, and demonstrated community impact. SMEs can position themselves as innovative and trustworthy players in their fields by securing coverage in industry publications, participating in panel discussions, or publishing thought leadership articles. This visibility not only attracts funding but also opens doors to partnerships with larger organizations, creating opportunities for collaboration and growth.
Public relations is not a short-term tactic but a long-term investment in a business’s reputation and relationships. For SMEs, sustainable growth hinges on the ability to build trust, adapt to market shifts, and differentiate from competitors: all areas where PR excels.
Building trust through consistency
Trust is earned through consistent actions and communication. SMEs that regularly engage with stakeholders, whether through timely responses to customer inquiries, transparent updates during crises, or ongoing community involvement, cultivate a reputation for reliability.
Let’s get an example. An AI startup that shares sustainability reports on transitioning to clean energy sources, for instance, demonstrates accountability, fostering customer loyalty and positive relations with other stakeholders, including local community. Over time, this consistency translates into brand equity, enabling the company to weather challenges and command premium pricing.
Adapting to market dynamics
PR equips SMEs with the agility to respond to evolving consumer trends and industry disruptions. For example, monitoring media trends and audience sentiment allows businesses to pivot their strategies proactively and in timely manner.
As an example: A fashion retailer noticing rising interest in circular economy models, for example, might launch a clothing recycling program and pitch the story to eco-conscious publications. This responsiveness not only keeps the brand relevant but also positions it as a forward-thinking leader.
Differentiation in a crowded market
In industries saturated with competitors, PR provides SMEs with tools to stand out. Storytelling that emphasizes unique values, such as a family-owned heritage, artisanal craftsmanship, or innovative problem-solving, creates emotional resonance with audiences. A coffee roastery that sources beans directly from women-led cooperatives in developing countries, for instance, can craft narratives around empowerment and quality, distinguishing itself from mass-market brands. Media coverage of these stories amplifies differentiation, attracting niche audiences willing to pay a premium for aligned values.
The democratization of public relations has leveled the playing field for SMEs, empowering them to compete with larger enterprises through creativity, authenticity, and strategic communication. No longer confined to boardrooms or global campaigns, PR thrives in local communities, digital spaces, and grassroots initiatives where SMEs naturally excel. Embracing PR as a core business function enables smaller businesses to amplify their voice, build enduring relationships and drive sustainable growth.
The future of PR is about adaptability and this works well for SMEs
The future of PR lies in its adaptability: whether through AI-driven insights, virtual engagement, or ethical storytelling. For SMEs, this evolution is an invitation to innovate, leveraging tools and strategies once reserved for corporations with vast resources. PR is not a luxury but a necessity, capable of transforming modest budgets into impactful narratives and local operations into respected brands.
The world and business are about perception that shapes reality which means that SMEs cannot afford to overlook public relations. It is the bridge between obscurity and recognition, between transactions and relationships, between survival and legacy. By investing in PR today, SMEs lay the foundation for tomorrow’s success, proving that strategic communication is not about the size of the business but the strength of its story.
