@i0null@infosec.exchange There was a time, long ago, when there was no standard Downloads folder and the browser always asked you where to put your downloads. Now it became a trash heap that I am too lazy to clean. So it shall remain that way.

Maybe unpopular music take: I wish after the intro from Welcome To The Jungle they wouldn't play Welcome To The Jungle. The intro guitar and base lines are so fast and high energy and then the put on the breaks and it gets boring. For me it would be so cool if they kept the energy from the first few seconds going.

I really like Veeam''s Backup solution especially on Linux because of the image based backups even with ext4. What I don't like ist the limited scheduling options. For that purpose I used some bash scripting and some SystemD units to help me out. I wrote a blog post about my process and at the end you can find a link to my git for the files.

@chrisstoecker@mastodon.social Mir hat sich bis heute nicht erschlossen was den Aufwand wert ist einen Wasserstofftankinfrastruktur aufzubauen im Gegensatz zu direkt Elektrizität zu nutzen. Ist es wirklich weil es 5-10 Minuten schneller geht und ein paar Kilometer mehr schafft?
I just bought myself a #saxophone and started learning. I always wanted to learn to play the sax but in my childhood I only got to try out the clarinet. There is some knowledge still stuck that is transferable but I have to learn all the fingerings and how not to squeak. There are a lot of buttons but it's fun so far. I no longer want to put off the things I want to do when I have the means for them.

@ChrisMayLA6@zirk.us Okay. You are right. I will split it up: Not voting because you can't is not your fault. Not voting because you won't is implicitly accepting the vote of the majority of voters. You could have made your voice heard but you didn't. Not voting is not a valid form of protest. If you don't want Reform vote against them. If you didn't vote you were okay with anything that came out even if that's not what you thought. It's the inevitable consequence of not voting.

I guess they have to legitimize their hardware somehow. I liked they games that they published but I am not dependent on them. Sucks that I won't be able to finish the Horizon Story thought.

A wired telephone is also a technical marvel in a way. It's easy to forget but in many cases there is a physical line between you and the person on the other side. So if you call someone around the world you could potentially follow the electrical signal through cables, through the ground, through the sea and get to the person on the other side. It's easy to get lost in the abstraction but this physical connection is an absolute marvel that is a joy to visualize for me.
I just got a mail from #storj where they announced that they will raise prices. The worst thing about this is their new minimum monthly price of $50 compared to the $5 before. This makes it pretty much useless as an offsite backup for me. They say the global supply shortages forced them. Now I have to migrate all my backups to a new service. For now it looks like that will be iDrive e2.

Sind wir jetzt wieder bei "wer hat das dünnste Telefon" angekommen? Ich dachte das hatten wir schon mal. Und dann haben sich die Telefone verbogen und waren teurer und dann haben wir kollektiv entschieden dass das keinen Sinn macht. Aber wenn Apple anfängt müssen die anderen hinter.

@ulrichkelber@bonn.social mal abgesehen von den Problemen mit der Lagerung der Endprodukte ist Atomenergie ein Beispiel für Low Risk - High Impact. Ein modernes Atomkraftwerk ist sehr sicher und die Wahrscheinlichkeit für einen Unfall niedrig. Wenn aber etwas richtig schief geht sind die folgen Katastrophal. Vor allem in einem relativ dicht besiedelten Land wie Deutschland.

@NDR@ard.social Ich bin mir immer noch nicht sicher was der 3D Druck bringt. Ich habe nicht das Gefühl, dass das bauen der Grundmauern das Zeitaufwendige ist. Trockenbau scheint mir viel aufwendiger und das fällt ja nicht weg.

If "no vote" would trigger something that would be okay. But the way it is now no vote just throws your democratic voice away. You achieved nothing but accepting what ever comes out of the election without input. It's always better to fight the worst option with the least bad option than just accepting the worst.

@david_chisnall@infosec.exchange I think we have a mindset problem. All these controls are at most technical. Be it restrictions for post or for quotes or any other thing. Even if they were perfect we are still sharing things with other people. If you don't want it shared don't share it. But I agree that all these option give a false sense of security. In a federated network we cannot enforce these. Giving the people the illusion of control will only lead to resentment if they get burned by it.

@viq@social.hackerspace.pl I don't mind using LLMs to contribute to OpenSource from a "sourcing" of training data standpoint that much. I agree though that the resource usage is currently just unsustainable. But so is it for the LLM companies. At a certain point the costs will catch up and then the price for tokens/subscriptions will go through the roof. That is the point when unsolicited LLM PRs will probably drop in number. I believe that time is near.

@nixCraft@mastodon.social These people are the reason that I constantly have to do stupid security trainings and get test phishing mails. It's so annoying but I guess it's needed. Even though I am not sure how well they even work.
I thought my server was too slow for all the services I was hosting on it. It was getting more and more sluggish. Turns out my #postgresql server only needed a full vacuum and reindex. Runs like a charm now.

@jsl @lazyb0y @chrisstoecker Ich war alleine auf Wasserstoff für das Auto konzentriert. Wasserstoff an sich kann an manchen Stellen Sinn machen auch wenn das mit dem "Wir haben ja schon Erdgasleitungen" zu einfach gedacht ist. Wasserstoff kann so leicht entweichen. Das Möglichst verlustfrei zu transportieren und lagern ist gar nicht so einfach. Da muss bestehende Infrastruktur auch stark aufgerüstet werden. Außerdem haben wir aktuell keinen Überschuss von grünem Wasserstoff.

I just don't understand pushing hydrogen for cars. Apart from the abysmal "well to wheel" efficiency the whole distribution of hydrogen seems like such a hassle. For a gas station it's usually pretty easy to just put up a few chargers but for Hydrogen you have to build new tanks and special pumps and have to organize shipments. And for what? Faster refueling? I can't see how that will ever take off.
