@carrideen I like the window we get into horse epistemology. A horse knows-how (to move the heavy thing) and knows-that (the fire cake is dangerous), but it also knows-with-face (the dreamed-of cake).

@mc@mathstodon.xyz hm, no references to Lawvere’s ETCS (1964) or its recent presentation by Leinster in Rethinking Set Theory (2014) https://arxiv.org/abs/1212.6543
A educated hobbyist’s opinion: the problem with set theory as traditionally presented is not that it’s too powerful, although it may be that, too; it’s that for most mathematics other than set theory itself, it demands awkward, low-level encodings.

@carrideen@c18.masto.host my kitty of yore used to make a face (wrinkled upper lip, mouth slightly open) like she was smelling something terrible and needed ALL of it. I wish I had a picture.
Instead, here she is « en boîte »

@jonmsterling I once applied for job that revealed itself, an interview at a time, to be co-extensive with “Nix sysadmin”. I wish that company well.

@chrisamaphone@hci.social tried to think of examples where you can negate pragmatics to decipher semantics and they’re all language-barrier romcom bits.
(Alice and Bob are mutually unintelligible. Alice makes a fool of herself to attract the attention of Bob. Bob laughs and says to Alice, “You dumbass.”)

@typeswitch@gamedev.lgbt omg the first- vs second/higher-order diss literature is so captivating. You can see historic battles unfold in real-time on the f.o.m. list archives: https://fomarchive.ugent.be/1999-March/002864.html

@jonmsterling amusing to imagine doing this with actual calendar primitives, mapping “accept” to “like” and so on.

@mc I also wonder how Apple-centric it is, apart from only being available on Apple devices, and requiring an Apple Account for desktop-mobile sync. I haven’t fired up wireshark to scan for suspect connections, for example.
I made a call that, after turning on e2ee for synced data, I could accept the risk of ID-provider shenanigans.

@sliminality@types.pl learned circa 7th grade (US public school), along with “multiplying both sides of an inequality by a negative number flips the inequality”. Shoutout to Mr. Freiberg, who also taught us the Fizz Buzz game.

@mc@mathstodon.xyz I want to ask, who is the customer for this product.
“Core” mathematicians should be able to ignore foundations, and I assume they mostly do.
Set theorists are fine, thanks.
For non-set theorists interested in foundations, a set that includes me, the literature shows lots of ways to mix and match axioms if e.g. you don’t like arbitrary choice, or if Replacement gives you a bad vibe.
I do see some value in narrowing the gap between math-as-encoded (in a foundational system) and math-as-practiced, but that’s not what’s happening here, AFAICT.
