some day soon i am going to have (what i'd believed to be) a conversation with someone and feel their attention wander and see their eyes glaze over and i'll say to them "hey are you listening to me?" and they'll answer by pointing at their sleek wristpiece and saying "oh don't worry, keep talking, it's got siri recap." i need to work on my right hook so i can be prepared for when this day arrives

then again, the bar is pretty low, seeing as how "actually wanting to know whether or not something works, or is true" is considered a hardcore leftist position nowadays

(more directly, what i mean is: during the "learn to code" era, it was easy to get programming students to value craft and care, since as teachers we had the "this will help you get a job" script on our side. in the "dario bought all the ram" era, we need a different script)

so issuing an "illegal" opcode on the game boy cpu essentially shuts the cpu down (illegal opcodes don't set the fetch flag, so the pc won't increment—and the cpu only services interrupts at the beginning of a fetch). BUT all the other peripherals on the SoC keep running! i feel like between the PPU, APU, timers, DMA, etc. there MUST be a way to "program" the game boy to do something even when the cpu is in illegal opcode zombie mode. this has no practical purpose of course but—food for thought!

got rid of the dynamic lookups by keeping the state in an array of ints instead of a struct, with an enum for offsets into the array to access particular registers etc., which gave me a 2x speed increase. i think the only sustainable solution here is to literally never let python allocate an object anywhere in the "inner loop" (which was honestly obvious from the beginning but i was Hopeful)

the main architectural thing i want to do with this emulator is immutable state, or close to it: each component of the SoC is implemented as a function that takes the current state as an argument and returns a list of updates it wants to perform, (rather than actually modifying the state). benefits: helps avoid inconsistent states; no need to worry about the order of changes on any particular tick; helps catch "bus conflicts" (when two components want to update the same value)

real-time operation isn't a priority for me, BUT it's really annoying to have to wait forever for long-running tests to finish :( i'm writing it in python because that's the language i can write things in fastest, and because it seems valuable to have an emulator that is deeply scriptable, but i might need to reconsider!

turns out this is very difficult to do in python with reasonable speed, for two reasons (I think, at least?): (a) no easy way to take a list of changes (e.g., a field name/value tuple) and actually update the data structure, without a dynamic look up (which is slow); and (b) you have to allocate and free a bunch of value tuples (and a list to store them in) on each tick (also slow). i've cythoned the hell out of the thing and i'm still running at ~0.1x actual gameboy speed

obviously, from a practical perspective, legal compliance is important. but the actual goal has to be fostering software that sustainably empowers people, and you can't do that with ai-generated code, regardless of its copyright status

really wish there was a publisher of computer programming books out there that specifically promised (a) they don't publish manuscripts whose production involved generative AI/LLMs; (b) they don't use generative AI/LLMs anywhere in the editing process; and (c) they don't publish books *about* generative AI/LLMs, unless it's about how awful those technologies are (and even then, only sparingly, bc frankly there are more interesting things to read and write about)

of course i just remembered that Tithonus was the lover of Eos, the goddess of dawn—the same Tithonus to whom Zeus gave immortality but not eternal youth. a pretty clear lesson for mortals about the dangers of trying to live outside time. but still (according to Propertius), Eos "despised [Tithonus] not, nor suffered him to lie lonely in the chambers of the East.... [W]hen nigh Ind she laid her down to rest in his embrace she made moan that the day returned too soon"

i feel like i'm susceptible to this as well—i've been tying myself in knots to try to come up with convincing reasons that LLM-generated code specifically is bad—but then I realized that pretty much all of the criticisms of AI-generated media (text, music, video, image, etc) *also* apply to code. and most of those criticisms are orthogonal to the "usefulness" of the generated media

very much recommend this beautifully written, acerbic, wide-ranging and informative piece about Arabic typography in the web browser https://lr0.org/blog/p/arabic/ "Arabic letters are strongly right-to-left. Latin letters are strongly left-to-right.... Spaces and punctuation are neutral and take their direction from whoever is standing next to them, like guests at a wedding who know nobody."

of course the alba, as a poetic form, is all about denying mortality (the only challenge to Donne and his lover's eternal unity—"nothing else is"—is the sun's "rags of time"—"hours, days, months"). and the tragedy of the Borg imo is that their/its desire for freedom from death requires the total annihilation of all individual difference. hence maybe Q's obsession with Picard, who—as Locutus—was offered the chance to stay in bed, but instead chooses to heed the lark

or maybe let's think about it a different way. why does software need to change? let's be optimistic and say that maybe 1% of changes to software are to add useful new features and fix actual implementation bugs. 99% of changes are to support new/buggy hardware that only exists because of planned obsolescence (or to pad transistor counts so chip manufacturers can keep number going up) or to support some new scheme to monetize computer use (surveillance, app stores, gambling in various forms)
