I haven't seen a post of this here with alt text, and I promise that those using a screen reader also need to experience this thing of great beauty from the print Onion that comes to our apartment.

Six years after buying this apartment full of outrageously janky and poorly installed off-brand appliances, one failed, and I thought, I've got this. I've saved up enough that I can afford to get us a dishwasher. But in order to get the new dishwasher in, I had to catastrophically dismantle the oven. Well, OK, I'll stretch my capacities and also buy a new range. Oh, it can't be installed because the microwave over it is no longer up to code? Guess we have to get a new microwave...

Today one of my students asked me why I hate AI writing/art so much, and I said, "Imagine if someone told you they were going to give you the best food in the world, and they went around to all the best restaurants in the world, and then put it in a blender and handed you a straw. Or all the most beautiful colors, whizzed together, so you can only use one color. That's how I feel about AI as art." "Oh, so it's... brown." "It's just brown."

I had a few pleasantries (sneeze/bless you) with the man across from me on the subway, and now that we are above ground, he is on the phone and clearly managing a pretty complicated stable of high-end phone sex workers with extremely demanding clientele for whom not just anything will get them where they want to go. It is always a treat to encounter people who are gifted at what they do!

Kane Parsons, the 20yo director of Backrooms, mentioned Punishment Park (1971) as an inspiration in an interview, which I had not seen, though I love Peter Watkins's 1964 Culloden. We watched Punishment Park tonight and it's somehow simultaneously shocking and satisfying to hear so many of the problems we face in the US today coming from the mouths of (lightly) fictionalized young people 55 years ago. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7dAEHh4Lw98

@deathkitten@firetribe.org I know--there are many many reasons. My students, like most college students, are being pressured to use it, not be "afraid" of it, and I keep finding that aesthetic disgust is the only thing that seems to break through sometimes.

I bought a new bra and in order to get a discount I signed up for the mailing list, which of course means that every day since I received the bra, I've gotten these increasingly invasive emails asking how it felt today. Did you notice it feels different this time? Should be just about molded to your shape now. Hot day today, good day for that bra, huh? You gotta wear it three times before you decide, OK? Mildly creepily entertaining but today, unsubscribe.

Every time I do something really big and complicated, I spent a few days in a frenzy of activity and energy and then I crash for days. The week I came home from running my conference, I finished edits on two articles, wrote a job ad, a CFP, booked a bunch of speakers, finished grading all my classes, wrote a million overdue emails... and then spent almost a week feeling like I was recovering from a nearly mortal wound. Reminder to self: You are not dying! This always happens!

@transience@beige.party If you cut them up, toss them with oil and salt, and roast them for a very very long time, until they are crispy and dark on the edges, and then toss them in citrus, they will not taste like dirt.

I am too respectful to photograph the two NB goth youths sitting across from me on this 1 train, both bent deeply over and furiously reading--one tearing through Foucault's Discipline and Punish, and the other plowing through an ancient paperback of Mishima. The aura on this train is electric.

Wow, so they made it impossible to turn off autocorrections to suggested text in the new Outlook? That is a bold move for a program I am forced to use at a workplace full of people with uncommonly spelled and international names.

Last night I dreamed I went to a philosophy conference that was the opposite of ours at Emory this month. It was mean, elitist, exclusive, silencing, shabby, defensive, and sad. There was no food or drink on the premises. People ignored the talks to schmooze or tuned in only to mock them. It was such a dead-on representation of everything I fear when facilitating scholarly meetings, or attending them. The environment you create will feed some impulse in people, good or bad.

@skinnylatte I was lucky to be raised in a real Baptist church that had plenty of flaws, but we learned early that cops are not your friends, you should never make pledges to government, and no one should ever know who you vote for. My parents didn't even tell each other. By the time I graduated high school, the pastor died and was replaced by a homophobic bootlicker who craved power and hated people, just like every other corrupted Baptist.

@jeffjarvis@mastodon.social It is absolutely wild to be a college professor and read these 100% garbage takes about higher education from mainstream media. Their own alma maters should be so ashamed that this is what their students say in public about them. But because media outlets only hire from elite schools, no one realizes that sub-elite schools are all about getting our students so very skillful and knowledgeable that hirers won't discriminate against them. Elite unis do not prioritize effective teaching!

@digitalsnow@social.lol We are also the most likely sexual orientation to endure domestic and sexual violence from partners, exacerbated by bi-phobic stereotypes and misinformation. And we quickly learn to hide our experiences of violence because non-bi people so often tell us we deserve it or we are making it up. https://lgbtqipvinstitute.org/support-for-bisexual-survivors/
