#BikeNite A1: I'm in Burlington, about to drive (!) home. For a while I was checking my tire pressure before every ride. Turns out there was a tiny piece of metal that was mostly plugging the hole it made, so there was a very slow leak. Eventually that became a very fast leak, so I patched the tire and now I don't bother checking unless the tire is visibly soft. @ascentale@sfba.social @nwarner@tenforward.social @bikenite@fedigroups.social#BurlingtonOntario

#BikeNite A1: I'm back in #WaterlooRegion for a change. The big non-cycling happening is "driving". I've needed to go to Burlington/Oakville about once a week for the last few months, and I'm so fed up with driving. The trip is about 100km; I used to drive more than that to work every day. I don't know how I used to manage it. @ascentale@sfba.social @bikenite@fedigroups.social

#BikeNite A6: I absolutely do adjust my foot and leg position to avoid or overcome knee pain. I carry a neoprene knee brace in my regular kit, which often gets a lot of use at the start of the bike season. Usually rotating my foot out (toes away from the bike) provides some relief. After a month or so of cycling I can feel that my knee has regained strength, and I can do without the knee brace. But sometimes the knee pain comes back anyway... @ascentale@sfba.social @bikenite@fedigroups.social @DeltaWye@tiggi.es @trouble@masto.ai

One month to the close of nominations for the municipal elections. I don't know what bothers me most: -Incumbents who have not yet declared if they're running or not; -All the ridings with no candidates; -All the ridings with only the incumbent; -Candidates who registered on 1 May whose websites still say "Coming Soon!"; -Incumbents with no online presence; -Incumbents with websites not updated since 2022… Check out #WaterlooRegion candidates: https://poliblog.jonkman.ca/Poliblog-Elections/2026-10-26-Municipal-Election/ #ONpoli #WRpoli #Election

#BikeNite A5: I would usually take the route with less traffic, even if it is a longer trip. But sometimes I want to ride that path through the trees, stop at a picnic table for lunch, say "Hi" to others on that path, and I'll brave a multi-lane stroad to get there. I'm in rural area where the only way to get to good trails is to take one of two high-speed roads with no bike infrastructure, so I'm used to it. And it looks like I'm the first to pick Option 1. @ascentale@sfba.social @SRLevine@neuromatch.social @bikenite@fedigroups.social

#BikeNite A1: I was in a little hole-in-the-wall Chinese food takeout when BikeNite started. I read some Qs while waiting, but no time to send As. That's what the weekend is for. In the Netherlands I learned to signal a right turn by extending my right arm. In Canada I learned to extend my left arm bent at the elbow with my hand pointing up. And then a CanBike instructor said to extend my right arm, since it gives a clearer indication which way I'm going. @ascentale@sfba.social @MartyCormack@urbanists.social @bikenite@fedigroups.social

@LynnD@cosocial.ca Saskatoon berries should be optimally ripe right about now. There's mulberry trees (more like bushes) all along the Iron Horse trail, too. I've seen people out with baskets and pails collecting berries. Sadly, with a few people taking home pail-loads there isn't enough for everyone else to sample. So yes, more harvestable vegetation in parks, please! @samnabi@spore.social #UrbanGleaning #UrbanHarvesting

Lots of updates to #WaterlooRegion's municipal candidate info! https://poliblog.jonkman.ca/Poliblog-Elections/2026-10-26-Municipal-Election/ It's just over two months into the campaign with less than two months to the close of candidate registrations (21 August). I'm a bit alarmed at how many positions still have no candidates, and the many incumbents who have not declared whether they're running, not running, or still thinking it over. It's a big disservice to others who might consider running if they knew the incumbent isn't. #ONpoli #WRpoli

@mayintoronto We had local meetings of online people back in the BBS days, called it a B*A*S*H -- probably an acronym, and yes, in the days of a popular TV series. Later we had MeetUps, long before an event company took that name, and then TweetUps, where we'd all get together in person so we could sit with our heads down, on our phones, tweeting to the people sitting right beside us. And we had Get2gethers too, more online/in-person parties. Fun times! #BASH #MeetUp #TweetUp #Get2gether

#BikeNite A6: I don't take many photos when biking.

The oldest that's easily accessible is from the #Waterloo #CriticalMass ride in 2010, with many riders in costumes. The Transformer was skateboarding...

(Edit: the CriticalMass *Halloween* ride of course. They weren't all like that)

The most recent photo is of damage to a bike lane, probably from a car that pushed the concrete curb blocks into the bike lane. Not much good for protection from traffic, apparently.

@uxmark Schabas's ruling on Toronto bike lanes is great reading! He repeatedly points out the Ontario government's case has no evidence, or is contrary to the evidence, and was contrary to the government's own CIMA report, which they took a long time to reveal. ie. Doug Ford et. al. lied by omission, lied outright, then lied and tried to hide it. And the cherry on top: Cycle Toronto was represented pro bono, but Schabas awarded their counsel $200,000 in costs anyway! #Cycling #Biking #ONpoli

@markgrieveson I have one of those microphones! I screwed the base, upside-down, to the underside of the bookshelf over my computer. This worked reasonably well, and I thought myself terribly clever until we moved and left the bookshelf behind with the mic base still attached. Now I have this mic-on-a-stick without a way to hold it up. Happily, I haven't needed it since then.

Cute, but a big hazard if a vehicle has to leave the road.

It's been 67 years, presumably all of them with no roadside accident.

Depending on one's grasp of statistics, an accident is either unlikely to happen at all, or there's one due any day now.

we may soon find ourselves with a runaway wealth inequality

I'd say we're there already, and have been for a long time. Even exponential growth starts off slowly.

Many years ago (1998?) I heard two men in suits talk about the shoeshine stands in the Toronto underground shopping. One said "It's nice to see lots of thriving independent businesses." The other said "Those aren't thriving businesses. What you're seeing is the polarization of wealth."
