I'm a neuroscientist and cat enthusiast.

This is my "non-professional" account for stupid jokes, crotchety ranting, and photos of my cats. For slightly more professional behavior, see my other account @biogeo@mathstodon.xyz.

My mom has been running a community art & poetry project using the fence around her home for the last 15+ years, which she calls The Poetry Fence. She takes it very seriously and uses it as a base for all sorts of poetry outreach in her neighborhood. She's recently written a book about her experience with this project which she's trying to get published by a small press. And in her mid-70s, she's just created her first ever website. It'd mean a lot to her if you take a look! https://www.poetryfencecommunity.com/ She doesn't know I'm posting this, but if she did she'd probably want me to add that science is real, no person is illegal, trans rights are human rights, and banned books are worth reading. And most of all, that poetry is for everyone. Boosts on her behalf appreciated. #poetry #community #SmallPress #publishing

@stefan_hessbrueggen@fedihum.org @shieldsy05@aus.social @ricci@discuss.systems Speaking as someone who does human subjects research in an academic setting, it is good and appropriate that we are held to a high ethical standard. Dealing with the bureaucracy around IRBs is often frustrating and slows things down, but that is an appropriate price to pay for the protection of research participants and giving society greater confidence that research undertaken for the benefit of all is being done ethically. What really grinds my gears is knowing that in many cases, a researcher working for a for-profit company can do the exact same things with zero oversight, and sometimes things that no IRB would approve, because many of the laws and regulations protecting human subjects no longer apply when the research is done for a "business purpose". We make it cheaper and easier to exploit people for profit than to learn from them for science.

@futurebird@sauropods.win Yes. One of the top priorities once this regime is ousted must be prosecutions for the many crimes we've all seen being committed, and bringing to light the many more crimes that are clearly happening just barely out of sight. Some of these crimes include murder, such as the murder of civilians on small boats, and these must be treated as such. No more "moving forward not looking backward", we can't move forward without justice for these crimes.

@eirias@mefi.social I think she's pretty cool. That was just about the time she started her poetry fence, with just a couple of bulletin boards and an urge to share. Del Ray has changed a lot since then! Sometimes I'm still startled at the changes when I visit.

@futurebird@sauropods.win It's anatomically ridiculous, and yet... The prominent sagittal crest is actually a nice touch. Suggests powerful temporalis muscles to go along with the impossibly chonky mandible.

@richcarl@mastodon.nu @BrianBinh@dice.camp @bluedragon@masto.yttrx.com According to Wiktionary at least, if you go back to Frankish those are actually the same -ard: https://en.m.wiktionary.org/wiki/-ard Looks like maybe the route through Old French picked up the diminutive/pejorative meaning, while Old English kept the original simpler "hard, brave" meaning? So Middle English ended up getting both.

@mdione@en.osm.town @libroraptor@mastodon.nz @heidilifeldman@mastodon.social I believe they are talking about university police, not university security. In the US it is fairly common for large universities to have their own fully accredited police forces, which are law enforcement agencies distinct from campus security. University police have jurisdiction over crimes committed on campus, while campus security do not have law enforcement powers. This probably seems so unlikely to you that you assumed the reference to university police was a mistake, but it is indeed how things work here.
