@dougmerritt@mathstodon.xyz @vnikolov@ieji.de I don't know that much about van Gogh, but I read the Pirsig book at least twice. I just listened to a podcast interview with Laurence Gonzales about his book "Surviving Survival". Gonzales says that we often comment that talented people are crazy, but what we should say is that crazy people cope by burying themselves in satisfying work. That insight strikes me as obvious in retrospect, and applies to both men.

https://lwn.net/Articles/1077425/

@bexelbie@toot.io I got the whole desk together in 67 short steps, except that I will need to mess with the adjustment screws for the hinges for the cabinet door. The mount for the hinges has a countersunk hole that should precisely align them, but apparently not precisely enough. Tomorrow is another day!

@hsivonen@mastodon.social There's also the piling-on effect, as in the Pandemic-era toilet-paper effect. RAM is so expensive that the concerns of manufacturers about not being able to satisfy customer demand may be misplaced.

@thetransmitter@mastodon.social Hah, it would be humorous at some level if a person's genome could largely be inferred from publicly accessible data. Some privacy debates may effectively be ended by technology.

@gregeganSF@mathstodon.xyz Similar reasoning applies to the charging rate of batteries. In that case, too-rapid charging produces unwanted, potentially stable material at the electrodes. Solar cells are a middle ground, as some perform better at high temperatures, up to a limit of course.

@keithp@fosstodon.org @pleia2@floss.social "Move or die" is true in some many senses. People don't understand how I could decide in my 60's to relocate overseas, but that's because they assume that all will remain the same where they are.
Unfortunately, it's "move and die anyway", as you have noticed as an age peer. I was at MIT when "X Windows" was started as "Project Athena."
