WA police launch real-time AI camera surveillance to catch criminals
WA Police will become the first force in the country to use real-time AI-generated facial recognition in public spaces.
The state government on Friday launched the Overt Live Facial Recognition program with a trial of the cameras at the police academy in Joondalup
The technology monitors groups of people from police vans and compares faces against a database of targets in real-time.

So, it now seems like ASIO will be able to:
- arrest you for questioning with approval rubber-stamped by the AG (instead of a warrant after a judge being shown evidence)
- detain you indefinitely
If you are arrested or detained by ASIO, it's now illegal to:
- tell someone that happened to you
- refuse to speak (rely on the right to silence)
This includes children as young as 14 years old—meaning they can't tell their parent or guardian that they've been arrested.
Lawyers are permitted to be present during questioning, but I'm not sure if they are included in the "you can't tell anyone" clause of the legislation, and the ASIO agents who are conducting the interrogation get to dictate how they advise and interact with their clients.
Your lawyer can also be removed if those ASIO agents decide they're a "security risk".
Your lawyer isn't allowed to intervene during the interrogation (to tell you your rights, for example), and can only ask for the agents to clarify a question or ask for you to be able to have a break.
This legislation will also have no sunset clause. It'll be permanent.

@ariaflame - US laws definitely don't apply everywhere. These aren't US laws. It also exists under Australian common law.
The right to silence isn't a US concept, it's a legal concept that exists outside of geography. You're just familiar with it being part of US legislation because you watch US movies. But, in the same way that speed limits aren't a US idea even though we see it in movies, the right to silence aren't a US idea.

Fascism (which is basically the death shudder of capitalism) has an aesthetic which revolves around young, strong and healthy, clearly gendered bodies, because it pushes the idea of having a family (creating the next generation of workers to exploit).
Anything that pushes back against this aesthetic will be hidden (or killed)—which means we'll see decreases in funding for disabled people, more policies that keep trans people out of view (like taking driving licenses), defunding of public spaces that we access, etc.
- and disabled people tbh, because the gendering of all toilets will mean a decrease in accessible toilets also
