That’s enough socialising, now back to screaming into the void. He/They.

Allegedly professional software developer. Definitively amateur photographer. Interested in things.

Avatar image: Headshot of me against a black background. I have purple hair and an inane beard.

Header image: Black and white photograph of multiple train tracks with overhead power lines. There is a bitumen road on the right hand side of the image separated from the tracks by a chainlink fence.

@vampiress@eigenmagic.net This is a logical* outcome of degrees becoming the thing that lets you get job, not about learning and expanding who you are. I was going to say endgame but they can make it worse. I did the wrong degree and was a terrible student (thanks, undiagnosed ADHD). But it signals I made it through and for some reason that's a positive? I don't really recall anything much from the degree. But the performative nature of the system has been progressively turning up for some time.

I need enough money and power to seize control of Mastodon development to add the most critical missing feature: Footnotes.

So yesterday I got a 3D printer, a number of filament storage/drying containers and about 20 spools of filament, mostly PLA and TPU. Setting the printer up is probably a weekend task.

Is it traditional that the first things you print after the test print are things for the printer itself?

@daedalus@eigenmagic.net Why is it the government’s job to ensure the public has confidence in a technology? Why is the Prime Minister referring to the public as consumers? Will there ever be a cure for ALP Brainrot?

@xssfox@cloudisland.nz I found a bunch of prints for...insertable objects...and I cannot begin to stress how much I think that's a terrible idea. Even ignoring the sanitisation issues if you print it wrong then it could separate internally. The flared base doesn't help IF IT COMES OFF. I assume you mean useful items instead, but I saw these things and my brain is still "THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU THAT'S A TERRIBLE IDEA."

@xssfox@cloudisland.nz I printed an adaptor for the top of the Snapmaker U1 that allows using an IKEA plastic storage container* as a top lid, as the first party one is delayed. In multiple colours to use the filament that came with the printer. If I was using it for an extended period I might reconsider the use of PLA but it only has to last until November. I have also been printing spools and I have a holder for bed plates and some adapters for the storage boxes lined up in the slicer. So it's nice I'm not the only person whose main use of the printer is to print things for the printer. *I have two for reasons. Maybe slightly better thermally, but probably not.

What you* do is after getting a Snapmaker U1 you really don't have room for you almost immediately order a Prusa Core One L you absolutely do not have room for. Your plan sounds like it's "feasible" and "doesn't disregard how much space you actually have". Kids these days. *me

@xssfox@cloudisland.nz What are you making? I have to clean bed plates so I can print a stand to hold bed plates. I am going to try using adhesive with PETG to see if that helps with getting the supports etc off the plate at the end of the print. That will be in lime green PETG to finish the spool.

@RyeNCode@mstdn.ca This is something I’ve encountered. I know that most of the time this won’t happen. But it will be bad when (not if) it does and we are using a platform that has features that allow us to prevent it. Humans are not good at understanding that improbable things are certain across enough instances.
