RE: @Khrys@mamot.fr

Amazing how fast Linux went from being the first and last name in digital counterculture to now being full of compliance bros seeking online clout.

This guy and his one-man mission to implement bad faith age verification at all costs is a warning for the open computing community.

Hey! Do you blog about Drupal? Do you have a Drupal project website? Are you just a big fan of Drupal and like to talk about it online? Then check out this new webring I created just for Drupalers! It's the Drupalers Webring. https://abmurrow.com/drupalers-webring If you send in an application to join the webring, I'll review it and add you to the ring. Applications form: https://abmurrow.com/form/drupalers-webring-application-fo I manally review every application, so please be patient if it takes some time to get back. Don't want to submit a form? I'll also accept a direct email or DM on mastodon with details about you and your website. Information is on the webpage I linked above. Websites should talk about Drupal to some degree, or be users related to the Drupal universe. Non-code and non-developer websites are welcome to join! Only rules: just be a Drupal enthusiast, please don't be an awful person (more details on the link), and make sure to display your webring code somewhere on your website, and you're good to go! Come say hello, and let's build our own web community! #Webring #Drupal #Blog #IndieWeb

Blog post by @luj@chaos.social that escaped my attention until now asking just how reproducible nix and NixOS is at scale? Turns out, he's been studying this exact question since 2017 and did a part of his PhD study on it.

https://luj.fr/blog/is-nixos-truly-reproducible.html

The answer? In 2017, about 60% of builds from nixpkgs were bitwise reproducible.

Now, it's over 90%.

This is great news! Especially since we don't have any tools that actively monitor this, so there isn't any active process that enforces reproducibility outside of nix itself (and the reproducibility team, let's not forget)

Great work, and great writeup. I look forward to reading more in the paper he teases in the post.

Trying out the Cinnamon desktop with NixOS and I'm pleasantly surprised by how good it is! It's mainly x11 right now, but I can live with that.

One hiccup though, the online accounts tool wouldn't work until I added

services.gnome.gnome-online-accounts.enable = true;

The official wiki didn't have any notes about needing to do that, so I added them. Now I'm wondering how much of my config could be extrapolated into fixing the docs for the tools I use.

RE: @firestorm@kolektiva.social

Our city's independent bookstore needs your help!

My local anticapitalist, antifascist, LGBTQIA+ friendly, anarchist, super ultra crunchy, cooperatively owned, and self described "radical bookstore" is falling on tough times.

Hurricane Helene was a doozy y'all, a ton of small businesses like this are closing with no plans on reopening. The FEMA payments meant to help Asheville and WNC are being bogged down in a bunch of red tape, so many of us haven't seen a dime of them yet, even though some of it is earmarked to help small business. And, although tourism is coming back (and we're very very open for business!) the shock to the system was just too big for a lot of folks.

I've seen long-standing cornerstorne-of-the-neighborhood places just like this wink out of existence without any warning, only to be replaced by exploitative, soul-sucking corporate owned chains run by people who don't even live or pay their taxes in our community. I don't want to keep seeing this happen to the town I grew up in.

These are good people who provide an essential service to our city: being some of the loudest, most outspoken defenders of our human rights, and providing civic minded reading material you won't find anywhere else.

They sell books other people don't want you to read, and that generally means those are books you're obligated to read.

Also, they once hosted the backroom of their bookstore out as a viewing space for a no-budget student film I helped make like a decade ago and they were real cool about it so-long-as everyone we invited to the screening bought a coffee or a book. Do you think Barnes & Nobel would do that? Would Amazon?

Check 'em out! Buy a banned book! Become a sustaining member of one of the best independent bookstores around!

@nina_kali_nina Yeah, I got that vibe too. OpenBSD is just out there doing their own thing it seems. Mostly feels like the focus is security, keeping X alive, and OpenSSH. Not bad aims, but not entirely dialed in either. It does have a community of users who, at least when I was dipping my toes into the water, who seemed to get it. But they're a lot of opsec folks, it's their job and they think about it a lot. Meanwhile NetBSD feels like a bunch of deranged internet nuts trying to cram their OS into every known tool in existence. Much more my speed in some ways, but less desktop support. Not a dealbreaker, just needs more focus time.

@nileane That's a very reasonable technical solution to an otherwise unreasonable law that kids will be able to squirm their way out of in like, a week, tops. You're right, why are we even having this discussion? It's propaganda designed to force the conversation into a limited space to make it easier to defend in spite of its obvious flaws. The law (conveniently) doesn't outline any technical requirements. Did someone with technical experience even review it? Was it just one reviewer? Did they have a conflict of interest? It looks like it is vague, open to iterpretation, and by all accounts, modest. Maybe even, at first glance, reasonable. Inoccuous. This leaves it wide open to last minute revisions or a more dramatic interpretation. Persona wouldn't need to do much to outbid any other solution providers to make themselves the gold standard by going above and beyond what the law requires on paper. A future "clarifying" revision could go much much harder and essentially make that the case. A little lobbying pressure wouldn't be out of the imagination. And I mean, that's the best case scenario. It's a vague, low effort way to get the door open and the powers it provides to lawmakers would be trivial to expand once there's a precedent. It's a pass from me. Legislate better. Make the tech bros pay taxes first.

RE: @eniko@mastodon.gamedev.place

This!

I didn't get into programming via computer science. In school I studied....

POETRY!

Thar's right. My undergrad thesis was a chapbook of minimalist poems.

The draw to programming for me was the thought that you could express an idea succinctly in a super concentrated form of language and witness it come to life.

Writing poetry isn't sooo different. I mean, it is, but the base ideas are still there, just in a different form.

The effect you're creating with language is more to play on people's emotion, their memories, and their assumptions, and there are a lot of cool tricks you can use to do this.

I remember one of my professors tell us in class that a good poem DOES something. It makes you move. It makes you experience something.

It's like a little play captured in a music box. You wind it up, set the stage, set the mood, and script certain elements into life, and you slowly dictate their movements and transformation through the poem.

The beautiful thing about it is that everyone receives it differently! I.e. its non deterministic, on purpose! But if you want to make the effect of your writing more predictable, or more universal, you need to understand how people think, how they feel, and how they receive language. You need to read the docs! Only the docs are living breathing experiences. It's your life.

To claim that computer programming has nothing to do with expression, artistry, people, or anything other than I/O is nonsense.

@alice I LOVE this piece. I think it was on tour with a show called You Are Here: Light, Color, and Sound Experience some years ago. I saw it once at the NC Art Museum. https://ncartmuseum.org/exhibition/you-are-here-light-color-and-sound-experience/ I remember the artist statement too-- IIRC it was something to the effect of the artist was trying to find a way to capture the feeling of sacredness and immense beauty that they saw in their (masque?) growing up, and wanted to make any room feel just as sacred. I'd say this did it! The exhibit this was on tour with also had a room with like 50 speakers, each one tied to a single singer as everyone was singing in chorus. You could kind of walk around the room and experience each unique voice during the song. I hope that exhibit heads your way soon too! It's worth a listen. EDIT: Upon further inspection, I can see that this is a slightlg different piece, though it may be the same artist? Not sure, but still cool.

@dgr@toot.li @XeroLinux@fosstodon.org You should check out Elementary OS or any distro with the Pantheon desktop environment. They have parental controls baked in and it provides a very simple framework for managing user accounts sort of in the way you're describing. Simple, low overhead, a "admin" user gets to decide what apps/permissions/screen time another has access to. No age signaling, just permissions. Personally, I think this is the way. Other Linux distros can do that too they just may not have a UI for it. Elementary does, and they do a great job putting that power into your hands, should you choose to use it. Still, this is ultimately a better tool than age gating all of your apps for you because some legislature said so.

As an addition to the last post, the finix project doesn't have any docs yet. It looks like there is an issue describing that need. https://github.com/finix-community/finix/issues/29 This thread is worth a read if you want to understand a little bit about how to get started. Finix is way more DIY than stock nixos, though they share the same package set. It purposefully has few to no defaults, so I suspect it'll feel more like Linux From Scratch than what most of us are used to. But on the plus side, the maintainer has a working personal config they encourage folks to explore. It is flake based and has solutions for most standard operations, plus a bunch of TODOs that are in search of fixing, perhaps. Looks like a simple niri box with a nice set of alternative systems tools and even a musl libc implementation if you want to play around with it. Reading this gave me the inspiration to switch to the limine boot loader, which is fantastic! https://github.com/aanderse/finix-config/ 2/ #Finix #Nix #NixOS #Linux

@oblomov I mean, sure. It's caught their attention and they're free to do what they want with it on their own terms. The license guarantees as much. But enforcement and compliance should never have to be a mainline concern. Like, what's the end game for trying to get Arch in compliance? That's largely a hobby distro that should never see the light of a corporate server. The law is just vague and uncompromising, hence you get people who just want to build surveillance infra without questioning why they're doing it in the first place.

@tamsin@toot.wales So sorry to hear this. Working around gluten is an absolute pain and I sympathize with what your daughter is going through So, first things first, if the entire house isn't gluten free, you can't guarantee cross contamination isn't happening. Especially if she is really sensitive, which it sounds like she is. I've been GF for almost 20 years now and I've had some issues with getting glutened just by being around flour. Not even (consciously) eating it. Just by being in a house (or a supermarket or a bakery) where gluten is present. Touching wheat flour gives me hives and I've gotten glutened by eating at people's houses where bread is present, so the cross contamination concern is top of mind when I read your post. I've learned how to adapt and I understand that I probably will get glutened when eating out or with friends. I'm not as sensitive as a lot of people are, so I can live with the occasional flare up, but it is something to keep in mind for very sensitive eaters Even some certified gluten free foods are processed on equipment that handle wheat, or it's hidden in ingredients like matodextrin. It's good to check upstream manufacturing especially with things like oats which are frequently a source of contamination. Definitely do your due diligence and do some tests. It'll suck, but knowing which foods are totally safe is key to reducing long term exposure. Some gluten free bread replacements actually cause more problems than they fix, so it's worth cutting replacements out until you know what the cause is Lastly, she may have multiple food sensitivities. Some non-gluten foods have proteins that cross react with gluten. Corn, rice, and oats, ironically, are sometimes cross reactive with gluten antibodies. What I did to help find my safe foods was literally just stop eating any processed food and any grains. It was steamed veggies, fresh fruit, and meat for a few weeks until I could isolate the things that set me off. You're probably already doing this or have been advisted to do so, so I won't go in depth on it. However, I was surprised to learn that this is how some people discovered they had sensitivity to unrelated foods. Sometimes that goes away once you reduce your inflammatory response, sometimes not

@tamsin@toot.wales To add to this, when I started going gluten free for my health, my immediate family also tried it out for a bit to be supportive and soon found out they ALSO had some sensitivity to gluten. Some have since gone back on to gluten, others have been on and off for years, but it absolutely did change everybody's relationship to certain foods. It's a really weird issue to deal with because sometimes the world feels like it's filled with things that are going to make you sick and it feels like a big scary problem with no solution that other people make worse because they don't understand or see the issues you have, other times it feels like you're giving up on a big part of life (I still get cravings for bread, every day), other times I'm super grateful for knowing what my triggers are and that I have the tools to achieve good health because of the hard work I did way earlier. Most days I have no issues and life feels normal and that's when it's all worth it. It's a process, is what I'm saying I guess. I'd recommend connecting with any local celiac community where you live. You'll get great advice and better support from them (and recipes!).

@computersandblues SpotTube is interesting-- it is a multiplatform client that allows you to listen to Spotify for free. It sources its music from YouTube, so bear in mind that not all music is on YT and some of the music on there is music videos and live recordings. But the big benefit is you can use an existing account to keep playlists, or just cruise around without ads or an account and just have music. The other thing I use is VLC and jump on to the Ice Cast radio stations. Hundreds of free radio stations that you can't get many other places, many without ads. Great for just putting on while you're working.

@shegeley@fosstodon.org Cool! I've been trying to learn how to do needle work like crochet and knitting lately. Maybe I'll take a look at this technique too.
