Ōtepoti resident, Tāmaki Makaurau raised. Covid protection cult proselytiser. I like tramping, reading, cycling, crafting and cooking, but don't seem to get around to doing them a lot.
Very keen on plants.

@va2lam@mastodon.nz Well there's clever and there's wise. I'm not sure Opportunity will get their land tax across the line with either party. There's also the hard ball Arden played with the Greens when it came to ruling out Stanton Turei as a minister, which seemed to work then. He may be emulating that @BobLefridge@mastodon.nz @jeremy_pm@mastodon.nz

@kete That's not my ideal. Ideally we would live in a community where I can share transport in comfort with a feeling of safety, and if there's someone there with me forgetting their social responsibilities there's also a driver I can trust to take action to remind them. Nowhere in my ideal is a guy telling us that women need to do all the things to stay safe, so bad actors can blame their victim if we don't. @AimeeMaroux

Help me Hivemind I've been asked to come up with some bicycle themed snacks for an album release party Ideally appealing to people from mid teens to twenties who go to loud bands and enjoy a mosh pit. Not too time consuming or expensive please, I'm a poor and tired person. Vegan would be good (especially with the price of eggs and butter) Best I can come up with is round cookies with spokes, rim and hub piped on #BikeTooter #FoodGloriousFood

@pezmico@mastodon.nz to be fair the logic is the heavier trucks can carry more things per trip and make less trips. I suspect 'fewer driver hours" is more important than "less diesel" to the transport industry. I have an alternative idea for increasing load capacity per driver hour, but it is not popular with the road transport industry. It's also best combined with rail capable ferries, some of those sidings they hocked off to the developers of big box retail outlets and a whole heap.of catch up on modular transport solutions to make the station to destination more efficient

@BobLefridge Or just let all the oldies have it whenever they first realise it's important? Sometimes this means going against the advice of their GP. Yeah, I know, if your GP says you don't need a vaccine that even stingy old Pharmac reckons has enough evidence of efficacy they are prepared to pay for it, then you need a new GP. But by the time you work it out the window has probably closed. @thomasbeagle @thirzajane

@Niall@mastodon.nz The rough approximation for the increase in damage is the fourth power. So if the axle is carrying twice the load it's causing 2x2x2x2 as much damage. I get that that's oversimplified and our roading construction is different from where that work was done (I've heard they had to call off a similar trial on a test road constructed here because it got too dangerous. The road was degrading even quicker, so whatevs) and I know there's new developments in axle engineering that help. But the exponential approximation actually comes from the physics of how mass and energy relate, so I'm sceptical @Iveyline@mastodon.nz @pezmico@mastodon.nz

@IanDSmith@mastodonapp.uk 33 years ago in Aotearoa we had a similar situation - a populist sitting member (admittedly an MP for a party he did not lead) resigned to trigger a by-election he expected to be the only candidate for. The bi-election bivalve (a chap whose friends all knew him as Mollusc, though the returning officer insisted on Greg Pittams) stepped up, earning Mr Peter's enduring animosity Obviously as a member of the McGillicuddy Serious Party he was in no way a joke candidate. In the end an unfortunate ragtag of other candidates also joined the race, but Mollusc swept onto second place. So long as you don't count informal ballots, that is.

There's always something, I know. But this is a sneaky, petty thing. DCC backtracking on opening the Caversham tunnel to cyclists and pedestrians so soon after finally agreeing to progress it. They have been dragging the chain on it for so many years.

Submissions have now closed.   Thank you to all those who took the time to submit! The Chain Hills tunnel is open and a wonderful success! The last 1-day count showed approx. 450 visitors. The Council has removed the Tunnels Trail project from the 9yr plan and the Trust has undertaken to work on the stages through to Green Island and onto Kaikorai Valley.   But the DCC control access to the Caversham Tunnel.

Anyone have any information about the bylaw that's the subject of this petition?

Growing up in Tamaki Makau Rau with the restrictions on going into entire catchments in the Waitakere ranges, I was surprised by the open access here (and the paths and shrubbery across the face of the earth dam at Ross creek) Nowadays Watercare up there have obviously had to be less fussy, because there's no way they can dictate what happens in the Waikato catchment.
Surely we already have some compromise in place of treating the silverstream water thoroughly enough to make it safe? Those tracks have been used recreationally by generations. I'll be super sad if those tracks are closed to day walkers

@pezmico@mastodon.nz Meanwhile our council is celebrating the early progress on the trail connections to out of the city by quietly putting working on opening the tunnel needed to connect the southern trail further away on the back burner that it's already been on for 21 years. So far away that it's actually fallen off. Never mind though, the bits that are already open are pretty cool, you can always pop your bike on the back of your car and drive out to enjoy them https://www.dttt.org.nz/news/annual-plan-submission-2026/ @Phil_Tanner@mastodon.philtanner.com @rimu@mastodon.nzoss.nz

Which is running over the end of a trial facilitating recreational use of a bit of road though the town belt by excluding vehicles. Candidates are encouraging their supporters to flood the feedback portal. Some kind of vice-signalling that they hope will translate to votes? @pezmico@mastodon.nz @Phil_Tanner@mastodon.philtanner.com @rimu@mastodon.nzoss.nz

@thomasbeagle We absolutely shouldn't have to pay for these vaccines, but what's the alternative? I do get that by paying we are complicit both in letting the govt know they can get away with not funding stuff if the horror stories are bad enough; and accepting an unequal health system. But not doing it seems more like cutting off our noses to spite our faces than sticking to higher ethical principles.

[Edited to correct age range] Maybe we could just accept that the rollout didn't reach everyone it needed to and come up with a reasonable way of managing the uncertainty. Just like they are managing the unexpected higher need for antivirals due to Covid (both for Covid and for the higher rates of shingles we are experiencing as s result) @thirzajane @BobLefridge @thomasbeagle

@Photo55@mastodon.social The only sure way to tell the difference between a bad cold and the flu is to test. It's simply not true that influenza is always horrendously symptomatic with bad fever. It can be mildly symptomatic, or even asymptomatic, and still potentially contagious. This isn't an argument for continuous testing, a better response to the research is layering protection when people share air with good ventilation/filtration and quality masks. @ravenbait@mastodon.scot @cstross@wandering.shop @quixoticgeek@social.v.st

I think I would probably say I need to frog it to feel happy with the result and never get round to doing it. Your motivation and may differ. Only other option I can think of is hiding a seam somewhere to take in excess, but i would just be annoyed every time I noticed it. If you want to try felting I would strongly recommend doing it with a sample first - both to see if you can achieve shrinkage and if you can to see if you like the appearance after
