mastodon 4.8.0-nightly.2026-10-06Retired computer programmer.
Made a living supporting MFG/PRO in a UNIX environment.
Worked for a French company but speak little French.
I mostly lurk but will occasionally make a comment.
I enjoy some video games, the latest being Solarpunk. It's very relaxing. I hope the developer enhances it over time.
I own a house. This should trigger all sorts of gut responses because there is always something rotting or leaking.
I was called a troll on Mastodon but a psychopath on Reddit. Oops.

Celsius versus Fahrenheit introduces yet another level of confusion.
"Preheat your oven to 350 degrees and bake for 45 minutes."
Fahrenheit = tasty treat.
Celsius = fire department visit.

The Anglo-Saxon peoples of the world are the meanest, most stupid people.
Convince me I'm wrong.
I believe this in spite of the fact that the English portion of my Ancestry.com genetics exceeds the Celtic/Gaelic portion. I'm going to continue to pretend that the Gaelic part is so strong that it overrides the Anglo-Saxon part.

@Wen Mr Brisbane should have cut the artist dude some slack. Corinthian capitals are more complicated to draw than Ionic ones and the artist probably wasn't getting paid enough as it was. He should be happy he didn't get stick figures and Doric capitals.

Robert Heinlein?
"Starship Troopers"?
If I remember correctly, only people who served in the military were 'citizens' and thus able to vote. I think I, growing up, read everything Heinlein wrote.

I once pulled a dot matrix printer off it's shelf and stomped it into pieces on the floor before throwing it in the trash. This was long ago - I think before 'Office Space'. The printer had a single cartridge which contained multiple compartments for different primary colors. It seemed to always be out of ink. I opened it up and found a stalagmite of dried ink an inch high where it had been leaking for the entire time I had owned it. Cue rage-quit.

I'm in the process of trying to buy a newer second BMW i3 online right now. My first one is a 2014 base and I'm tired of worrying about being able to get home if I run the heat or AC. Not sure what to do with the 2014. Might sell it to Carvana. Might strip Everything out of it and convert an old pickup truck to electric.

I do have a few solar panels. That is another option to consider.
My house has a clay tile roof. More solar panels on the roof would normally not be a problem except that the roofer NAILED the clay tiles down with #6 galvanized common nails. They're rusting through 50 years later and I occasionally find a tile slid down. I'd have to rework the entire roof with screws before I could put panels over them. Too old for this and maybe too poor.

My parents made me take Latin in middle/junior high school. I made failing grades. I can't read what you write in Latin. I wish I had taken French. Or Spanish. Or German. On second thought, not German. Italian. Yes, they're Romance languages. Go figure.

Thanks for reminding me that it is that time of the year again. Given that it's been 80 degrees F (26.6 C) for the past couple of days here in Ohio, I guess it is safe to switch back to the regular tires.

It's OK. If you eat a healthy diet and get your exercise, you can live long enough to see them die. I have only 3 people left in my personal sphere of interest who weren't on a bridge. One can barely walk now. Another is in a Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville with heart issues. And the 3rd? "Only the good die young".

Are they elves or are they gnomes? Mine are not malevolent but are irritatingly mischievous. They hide my tools. I spent 10 or 15 minutes looking for a tape measure but yesterday it was back where I had put it in plain sight on top of my workbench. They either move tools or cover them under a little cloak of invisibility until they become bored with my frustration.

I've been contemplating what to do about the rear end of the restomod electro pickup truck for quite a while until I remembered the name of a Frenchman - De Dion - who was responsible for invention of a tubular rear axel that would work just fine in this situation.
