Nice to meet you! I'm interested in Linux, FOSS, and FOSH, but I'm interested in other topics as well :D

Boosts != endorsements. Opinions own. I treat Mastodon like an interactive RSS feed.

Working on mainlining Linux on the Samsung Expressatt, Pinephone Pro, and the Surface RT.

whoever thought of the name Evergreen [Linux] (would prefer if it was called EvergreenOS to come up in search engines) is a fucking genius

multiple meanings (atleast for me):

  • evergreen trees usually grow on mountains (referring to alpine)
  • green: envokes the idea of recycling and a nod to pmOS colors and roots
  • evergreen trees are green all yr round… meaning we dont want to give up on old forgotten devices

chefs kiss

i really hope this is the new name

Pinephone Pro Linux mainlining thread

Decided to  make a thread on the work I'm doing on the Pinephone Pro and pin it to my profile. Here's the list of things I've done so far:

- @Logical_Error@fosstodon.org
- @Logical_Error@fosstodon.org

Mainlining Guide: https://forum.mainlining.org/t/upstream-pinephone-pro-patches/138

Had to pause Pinephone Pro development because I got demotivated a bit, but hopefully I'll be able to continue in the near future. Stay tuned~

Upstream Pinephone Pro Patches!

Upstream Pinephone Pro Patches!

This is a noob-friendly guide on how to mainline patches to mainline linux for the pinephone pro (short form: ppp). This should help you get your first patch into the Linux kernel! Any questions? Ask away! What does “mainlining” mean exactly? An Android or Linux device usually has some drivers to make peripherals (eg. touchscreen, battery, etc.) work. The problem is that these devices usually run an outdated Linux kernel. That means you are constantly rebasing and testing changes on top of main

nice john oliver did a video about privacy. mainly focuses on flock, but references eff and the general slide into a dystopian surveillance state https://youtu.be/lnBPhelCdWE funny how motorola provides police gear but also partners with grapheneOS for a privacy phone… somethings fishy there lol

@newbyte@mastodon.nu yes 💯% very useful in using downstream ports to start mainlining devices. this is how i started u can whittle down the files for downstream linux kernels to the bare minimum quite easily. that way ai can quickly grep and find relevant things for mainlining purposes. ik pmOS doesnt like ai, but this workflow has genuinely been useful for me to get actual functionality working without spending a lot of time 1 problem: people get comfortable with ports and rarely improve it

#solar #electricity: is there a DC standard to use in homes instead of AC? since solar panels and batteries are getting cheap, it seems like it makes sense to get rid of the inverter in all devices (only necessary for connecting to the grid) i wonder if there would be a worldwide standard to DC systems in homes if its ever formalized

@evacide@hachyderm.io better solution:

  • data brokers (& imo service providers) ask people directly if they can retain such data with a link to a gov website to respond to that message
  • if people can’t be contacted, dont respond, or say no, their data is deleted
  • asked every year

sidesteps having the gov retain info (avoids data breaches or used by a fascist). this approach also gives gov info on opt in/out data for enforcement & compliance purposes

opt in is always better than opt out

a way to install linux without a usb drive

https://github.com/rltvty2/ulli

very interesting! just double click an exe file and install linux

would be interesting if #bazzite or @linuxmint@mastodon.social offered exe programs that does this type of install

@dansup oh wow! great thing monetization is on the roadmap. will definitely fuel a good feedback loop slight worry with monetization is that things tend to enshitify in the long run (hopefully not with loops!), and i hope there are structural safety nets to incentivize for that not to happen. it being on the activitypub protocol is already a plus :) can’t wait for ios store launch! :)

And if they truly don’t use any open source software at all and don’t want to use any, why do they want to follow a course about the subject in the first place?

unfortunately, i know the reason why. some questions: how many of your students gets A’s? What is your rating on rate my professor (or a similar website)? generally, how much effort is required by your students?

if i’m guessing right, to them this is an easy A meant to boost their gpa. they dont care otherwise :(

@newbyte@mastodon.nu sometimes it has been faster/useful running the downstream kernel to get values directly, even if the source code is there. i use the cyanogenmod img instead of the pmOS downstream (iirc that no longer compiles) but i assume that the downstream pkg would come in similar use for others i assume the original question was posed due to maintenance burdens? if so, it might be useful to store build artifacts & pkgs instead of maintaining the pkg, unless someone fixes it up

@Profpatsch@mastodon.xyz unfortunately frustration brews because 1) people are generally powerless against the underlying system (here: ai company greed) and 2) social media tends to bubble up black and white views (utility/implications of ai) here we see both parties interpreting the 3rd person “you” as referring to themselves (or maybe im misinterpreting here) would highly suggest taking a break and then chatting with each other when ready ^^ @whitequark@social.treehouse.systems @lina@vt.social

@bunnie clarification question: what’s the use case for this mmu, open source chip? is it meant to be a raspberry pi competitor (eg. targeted for hobbyists) or is it targeted for enterprises where devices are made with this particular chip (eg. a new low cost game console)? im also curious how hard it would be to for engineers/users to transition from linux to xous. would it be hard since xous doesnt comply with posix? great talk btw!
