As a feminist, who has been in many different kinds of relationships with cis, hetero men, after decades of analysing the patterns of them, I found a common theme and I know that I am not the only woman who came to that conclusion. In my experience this is true for all cis, hetero men, not matter if you are neurodivergent, progressive, even call yourself a feminist. You are all way too comfortable with women doing all the work for you, while not even being aware of it, while not even acknowledging it, at least not to the full extent. In my experience there are no exceptions to this. This is the reason why the song "Labour" by Paris Paloma resonates with so many women, this one of the many reasons why women simply give up on dating cis, hetero men. #feminism #intersectionality #neurodivergent

Double (?) empathy problem: Autistic person asks for handling a situation in a specific way, that would accommodate their needs. Allistic person: "I would prefer do it differently." Autistic person explains in detail that they are asking for this accomodation, because it is necessary to make the situation accessible for them, not a nice to have preference. Allistic person: "You don't have to explain yourself." Autistic person: "Yeah, but I obviously have to. I wish I wouldn't and that you would have taken my need for accommodation seriously in the first place, but unfortunately that wasn't the case." Allistic person: "No need to be rude. You are so sensitive." Autistic person: 😐 #ActuallyAutistic #AuDHD #neurodivergent

About neurodivergent relationships, trauma and cat videos
Many, probably most AuDHD people experience rejection, emotional abuse, trauma, have CPTSD. When it comes to neurodivergent relationships, there's this moment when we start to open up, when we want to be close to another person. That makes us vulnerable, past experiences, thoughts, feelings rise to the surface. And even if we did inner work, even if we are not completely aware of it, don't want it, we feel the need to protect ourselves, become defensive, lash out. Some time ago I watched a series of videos about traumatized foster kittens. The woman who took care of them, had an older cat, who slowly approached them, slowly gained their trust. The little kittens were aggressive, but she stayed calm and slowly, carefully moved closer to the kitten until it calmed down, accepted the closeness, started to feel safe. In my experience we can be like these cats for each other. Staying calm, validating the struggles, the feelings of the other person, slowly gaining their trust. And when this is mutual, love starts to grow. #ActuallyAutistic #AuDHD #neurodivergent @autistics@fedigroups.social

Why is it so difficult for autistic people to find friends and partners? I read some post about this during the last days and here are my thoughts on the topic. The short answer is that it not because there’s something wrong with us. It’s because we are a minority group, we are very different from each other and have limited options to find each other. These factors are strongly intertwined. Yes, we are not perfect, unresolved trauma, masking and internalized ableism play a role and we all have to work on it. But at a certain point we cannot do this work on our own, we need other people to practice what we learned, to create new data for our nervous system and if we do not have these people, we are trapped in a vicious circle of burnout and loneliness. This brings me to the second point, our limited options. Many of the autistic people around my age (I am in my 40s) who are similar to me, are probably also in a similar situation. They are either trapped in poverty or a relationship they don’t want to be in. They do not live, where they want to live, they are not able to travel or even leave the house for longer than an hour. Many of them don´t even know that they are autistic. So, there are limited options to meet each other. I go outside with Beagle Lumi every day, but in my conservative neighborhood, I won’t find my people. I can get along with them, but they are not my people. And online? Dating apps are overwhelming asf and the autistic people similar to me will think that too, so I won’t find my people there. Realistically, I have the best chances to find my people here on Mastodon. But most of us have rejection sensitivity and are so burnt out, that reaching out to a new person is not an easy thing. We do not have the energy for it. Then there are our differences. We experience the world intensively, we didn’t go to an autistic kindergarten, nobody explained to us how to cope with this world. As a consequence, we are not only very different concerning our needs and special interests, but we are also very different in our coping strategies. During the last years I had several chats, friendships, even intimate relationships with other AuDHD people online. Most of them were not suitable for a long-term relationship, because of our differences or difficult circumstances and that’s ok. But they were enriching my life, they made me grow, they were inspiring and validating. Realizing that you are not a good fit can be hurtful and frustrating, getting to know new people takes a lot of energy and we are already low on energy. But it’s amazing how much energy connecting with another AuDHD person can give you, it made me and the people I connected with feel decades younger and so happy. I found the best friend one could wish for here on Mastodon. So, I will continue to write these posts, encouraging people to chat with me and I do not feel ashamed for it. I am done with feeling shame for having to deal with being a multiply marginalized person in unconventional ways. #ActuallyAutistic #AuDHD #neurodivergent @autistics@fedigroups.social

For me and many other disabled people, purely existing, having hope and experiencing joy is the only form of protest we can take part in and that's totally valid.

Unlearning the wrong way, does not automatically teach us the right way and I guess that I am not the only autistic person who had to learn that about neurodivergent relationships. In other words, embracing your autistic self, unmasking the autism and acting like an excited toddler on coke are not the same thing. I mentioned it in other posts before, that we didn’t have an autistic kindergarten, that we did not learn healthy autistic behavior and socializing while growing up. It’s not our fault, we don’t have to feel ashamed for it. What our parents, what the world taught us was often unhelpful, even damaging for most of us. That creates problems in our neurodivergent relationships, we can overwhelm, destabilize each other or feel like we are still too much, even with other autistic people and that hurts. Going back to masking, to neuronormative behavior and communication is not the solution of course, we have to gain emotional maturity in an authentic neurodivergent way. Understanding ourselves and our needs and communicating them openly is a key factor in my experience. Respecting other people’s boundaries and not trying to push them is another. And we have to be honest to ourselves, when it comes to that. Taking things literally, needing rules does not mean that we are incapable of nuance and that everything has to be explained in detail. Especially as an AuDHD person that can be a tricky thing, when the need for dopamine, for intensity is pushing us forward, when we are in a hyperfocus on another person. In my experience letting relationships develop slowly, giving each other space is important, while at the same time accommodating the rejection sensitivity and need for clarity by communicating openly helps not to become dysregulated in the process. Just not responding anymore, ghosting an AuDHD person is cruel. Our neurodivergence gives us so many skills we can use in the process of getting to know each other, connecting with each other. Pattern recognition, high empathy, honesty, analytical skills, curiosity, critical thinking skills, building routines, being structured and detail focused and so many other AuDHD strengths can help us with being our authentic, unmasked autistic selves while building healthy relationships with other neurodivergent people. #ActuallyAutistic #AuDHD #neurodivergent @autistics@fedigroups.social

This is a bit polarising, but I do think that autistic people are black and white thinkers while at the same time we are able to find the nuances in between. I have the impression that many neurotypical people think in shades of grey, but stay away from the black and the white to be able function. This is goes into the same direction as the intense world theory and us having a spicy skill set. Some years ago I read a tweet that stated, that autistic people's memories are sharp pictures while allistic people have kind of blurred movies. I don't know if that's true, but makes sense in this context. It takes us so long to get the whole picture, but once we have it, it's very precise. We build it out of details until we understand the concept, it doesn't come to us naturally, it's hard work. I made the experience that people perceive me as negative when I am rational and do not make positive assumptions. I can face my and other people's shadows, I am not afraid of them, they don't make me sad or even depressed. At the same time I can experience ecstatic joy, also known as autistic joy, that comes across as childlike or weird to neurotypicals. So yeah, I live in the black and the white and all the colours this world has to offer. It's not rigidity, it's intensity and rationality. #ActuallyAutistic #AuDHD #neurodivergent @autistics@fedigroups.social

Reference to death, trauma, politics, disability pride
@pathfinder@beige.party Thank you so much for this post. It is so important that we acknowledge and are proud of the fact, that we as autistic, as AuDHD, as disabled people are constantly living life in the hard mode in a world that hasn't been made for us. This is what disability pride is about. It made us stronger. The ones of us who survived until now, but many did not. We always have to keep that in mind. That we made it up to here, every day we survive in this ableist system is something we can be proud of. But while trauma makes us develop skills and the challenges we face contribute to our personal growth, it also kills many of us, disables us even more. It should not be like that. What really makes people strong is community, validation and an environment that supports our individual strengths and accommodates our needs. By now the autistic community has enough knowledge to provide these things for the older ones and the younger generations, although there is still so much to discover about our neurodivergence. But as you said, the people in power, the people who could make these changes don't care about that and make life worse for everyone instead. And we have the right to be angry about that. Because that is part of disability pride too. To direct the anger against whom it belongs. Not against ourselves, but against this ableist system and the people who uphold it. #ActuallyAutistic #disabled #DisabilityPride @autistics@fedigroups.social

As an autistic woman, who experienced SA herself and as an intersectional feminist, I reject the trope that most men are monsters, that men are inherently bad and women inherently good. This approach is the opposite of helpful, it’s highly problematic for all genders and leads to the terf, fascist, religious extremism pipeline.

It’s not the gender, that corrupts people, it’s power.

For that reason, Feminism and Anarchism are strongly intertwined. Because we are not talking about physical power here. If you can train a huge dog, that could kill you with a bite, not to touch his food until you allow him to do so, we as a society can teach men not to rape a woman during her sleep.

The problem is, that we don’t do that. Living in patriarchy means, that a poor black girl has to take more responsibility and is held more accountable than a rich white man.

Patriarchy limits men’s possibilities for personal growth, it makes most of them become weak cowards, who exploit women and are easy to control. That is why oppressors created this system in the first place. This is what intersectional feminists mean, when they say, that men suffer under patriarchy too.

It also means, that not all women are safe for other women. As a marginalized, autistic woman, I might feel safer with an autistic man, than with an allistic woman. Not only because internalized misogyny is a thing, but because patriarchy is a hierarchical system, that gives some women power over others, it makes them compliant.

For me personally it means that despite all the bullshit men did to me, women were the ones, who deeply traumatized me over and over again. It means, that I will choose the people I trust not based on their gender, but based on their ability for critical thinking, personal growth and the power structures inside and outside of my relationship with them.

I think with my new personal assistant I will use another strategy than I did with the ones in the past. Instead of explaining that I have a different neurology and all that, because none of them has a neurodiversity affirming perspective on autism I will go for "Yeah, I am like an alien, a creature from another universe. Expect the unexpected. I am crazy in the right way and we will have a lot of fun together. Let's go." Something like that. #ActuallyAutistic #AuDHD #neurodivergent @autistics@fedigroups.social

In my opinion people with acquired neurodivergence deserve the same acceptance and accomodations like people who were born with a divergent neurology.

For me that means that I will do my best to create a safe space for a person who experienced trauma in the same way as I do for a sound sensitive autistic person. It means that I try to handle the need for control of an ND person no matter if the cause for this need is a mental illness or AuDHD.

That doesn't mean that I will endure disrespectful or otherwise shitty behaviour from a neurodivergent person beyond my capacity. An explanation and an excuse are still different things and I set boundaries to protect myself and my mental stability.

It's not me to decide if a person should be able to handle their neurodivergence in a different way, but it's my decision if I am willing to cope with it or not.

Danke. 💜

I lately got the impression that a lot of neurodivergent, especially AuDHD people struggle with their mental health during spring time.

So while the neurotypicals talk about autism awareness, ask about your plans for the holidays and tell you to enjoy the beautiful, sunny day, I am not only very much reminded of the fact that other people have a life outside of their apartment, the local graveyard and Mastodon, there are also a lot of other aspects that make springtime difficult for me.

The change in light and temperature is difficult for my body to cope with and contributes to my AuDHD inner unrest, hyperactivity and impulsivity. So if you saw me posting and deleting more texts than usual, that's just the tip of the iceberg.

The light and warmth do give me an energy boost that my routines aren't made for, which makes me question myself and creates the need for change. Change isn't easy and I often run out of energy before I can finish a project which creates a lot of frustration.

Not only are the bright light and the weather the reason for sensory overload itself, but during spring a lot of people and their outside activities contribute to it. Lawn mowers and barbecue parties are just two of many examples. Feel free to rant about the ones the NTs torture you with in the comments.

So know that you are not the only one struggling right now and that it's perfectly fine to stick to your routines, protect yourself from sensory overload, that you don't have to feel guilty for not enjoying every bright sunny day and that you are not a failure if you don't take part in barbecue parties.

@pathfinder @autistics Thank you so much for this important post, that makes us think and write about individualism, community and disability, for pointing out, that needing support doesn’t mean that we are not independent. Similar to @Susan60 I don´t see the root cause for this individualistic view of independence in autistic black and white thinking, but in capitalism and white supremacy culture. The personal is very much political here. Capitalists believe that the one who hoards the most resources and exploits the most people is the most independent, which is nonsensical in itself. For us as autistic people “normal” often doesn’t work, because we are different, we experience the world differently, process information differently and communicate differently. For that reason, we have a strong drive for autonomy, we like to do things our own way, which is then pathologized as PDA. Your conclusion, that autistic people feel bad for needing support, because of our black and white thinking, reminds me a bit too much of the trope of the stubborn disabled person. This is how we are portrait in media so often, that we are the problem and that there’s a happy end as soon as we just accept the support, that is offered to us. It shifts the responsibility for lack of support to the individual instead of understanding it as a systemic issue. But the truth is, that most of us do not have access to the support we need and that we have to give up our autonomy for the little support we get. So, for me as an anarchist your heartwarming story about this old lady shows that we do not need a state, that makes us prove over and over again how disabled we are, which not only costs us energy, but is also a waste of resources, but that we need community. It’s part of my bottom up thinking as an autistic person. Unfortunately for us autistic people finding community is even more difficult, because of our differences, which makes us being even more isolated and in danger of our autonomy being taken away from us by a system that frames us as the problem. Capitalism takes peoples capacity for mutual support away and then sells it back to us, which makes access to support a privilege, a class issue.

As an AuDHD person, patience is not one of my strongest virtues, but I am capable of it, when I really want to gain the trust of a human or another animal. Beagle Lumi, a rescue, who spent the first year of his life in a laboratory for animal testing before I adopted him, has been a good teacher for me concerning that. These moments when he shows me that he feels safe with me still do something to my heart, I can't put into words.

About two years ago I decided that I want a crow friend, so I started to put pieces of a walnut on the balustrade of my balcony every morning. It was difficult, but I resisted the urge to watch the crow eating them, because they don't like it.

Last year it happened for the first time, that the crow not only ate the walnut pieces while I was sitting with my coffee on the balcony, but they even stayed, looking at me afterwards. Since then the whole crow family visited me every day, but only one of them was brave enough to come closer.

A few weeks ago the pigeons started to steal the food (the early bird gets the walnut) and I thought that my crow friend has abandoned me, which made me a bit sad.

Today I overslept a little bit and when I had my coffee on the balcony I saw them having a "discussion" with a group of magpies in the tree, so I put the walnut pieces on the balustrade and waited, sitting calmly on my balcony while listening to music.

Not only did my crow friend eat the walnut, they also stayed for a few more minutes, looking at me. It was such a beautiful moment of connection to an animal. It made me feel happy and peaceful. 🐦‍⬛

I already feel like a socializing hero, when I write “happy birthday” to someone on Mastodon or interact in a comment section here. I am extremely monotropic and I feel most comfortable in 1:1 interactions. That also allows getting to know people on a deeper level.

In my experience music can help "reprogramming" our bodyminds, getting rid of harmful thought patterns and even give us access to information hidden in the subconsciousness.

Sometimes it's just a line in the lyrics, it doesn't have to be the meaning that the artist intended. It's about what your bodymind associates with it.

So to all the autistic people, who need time to process things, who mask and fawn, especially autistic women, who sometimes find themselves in situations where they feel obliged to do things, that make them feel uncomfortable, because you said "it's fine" before, this song is for you.

It's ok to change your mind. Consent can be revoked at any time.

@joshsusser Exactly. It makes such a difference to understand your own neurodivergence and to communicate with people who do that too and as I mentioned in another reply there's a lot of joy and validation in unmasking together and accommodating each other. Building shared routines can provide stability for a relationship and can help with managing energy levels and the need for alone time for example. Me asking one question after the other about the special interests of an AuDHD person was so joyful for both of us. This is what I meant with the need for practise and creating new data after working through trauma and internalised ableism. You are absolutely right about the problem that we internalised NT rules and behaviour and the impact that can have on our relationships with other neurodivergent people. I experienced that too. Heteronormativity and neuronormativity have to be dismantled and replaced with our own rules and I experience that as an ongoing process in ND relationships, that leads to personal growth and a deep connection if both partners or friends have the emotional maturity to work through a conflict together.

@eruonna Very relatable. I also struggle with approaching people and am much more comfortable with others approaching me. I often feel like I never had an interesting thought during my whole life at the beginning of a conversation or am afraid that my curiosity comes across as interrogation. But once the communication reaches a certain point it feels like the words are flowing out of me and there is not enough time to cover all the interesting thoughts and topics we already mentioned. That often led to chats that lasted for hours depending on the energy level and situation. @autistics

@eruonna We experienced a lot of rejection for being our authentic neurodivergent selves in the past and in my experience that can make us feel insecure when it comes to interactions with ND people too and it can lead to masking although there is no need for it. As @joshsusser explained so well in his reply we have to unlearn the NT rules inside of ND relationships as well and that takes time.

@Tamtam @pathfinder @autistics @Susan60 Yes. The distinction between personal autonomy in inter-dependant connections and independence, how it is understood in patriarchy and capitalism is important.

@MJmusicinears Thank you for your kind words. I am also willing to hug and smile despite this situation. Often the kindest people are the ones who had the most difficult lives, because we understand that problems and crisis are not a personal failure and have a lot of empathy for others. And for me as an AuDHD person, the differences that make me struggle are also a source of so much joy. I wish you and your nephew all the best. 💜

@Lemlems@mastodon.social Very relatable, especially the "fuck this" moment. I do look back to learn from past mistakes and keep sweet memories though.

@Lemlems@mastodon.social Omg, that's true for me too. My birthday is in March and it almost felt like a countdown for the end of relationships so many times. There were also other factors involved, but it's a very interesting observation considering what I wrote in my post. This year we had the first warm spring like days already at the end of February ... 😐

It’s Bandcamp Friday today. 🎶 I supported the young talent Bravil I am very much a fan of: https://vblvbdnb.bandcamp.com/album/the-end https://vblvbdnb.bandcamp.com/track/inskirt I also bought the Platinum Metalheadz release of Conrad Subs: https://metalheadz.bandcamp.com/album/cylinder-ep And my favorite purchase of the day and one of my favorite releases this year is Darkest Hour by Konverge, that has been released today. Exactly the sound I am looking for and the track Sketch Offender reminds me of Funktion by Ed Rush, Optical. I also got a 20% discount from the label, which made me very happy. ☺️ https://dsci4.bandcamp.com/album/darkest-hour-ep And of course, I created a new playlist, that contains most of these tracks. https://bandcamp.com/kacihue/playlist/darkest-hour #Bandcamp #BandcampFriday #dnb
