The old man
must have stopped our car
two dozen times to climb out
and gather into his hands
the small toads blinded
by our lights and leaping,
live drops of rain.
The rain was falling,
a mist about his white hair
and I kept saying
you can’t save them all
accept it, get back in,
we’ve got places to go.
But, leathery hands full
of wet brown life
knee deep in the summer
roadside grass
he just smiled and said
they have places to go
too.

Inspired by her own garden and her visit to Monet's gardens at Giverny, textile artist Kathrin Marchenko created a large 110 x 280 centimeters thread painting, 'Nymphéas Beyond', in which water and plants seem to become one.

And so I celebrate the end of the winter festivals because it promises not just the light returning but also that the darkness will come back to be illuminated by words. -- from 'Winter' by Val McDermid

When ball
moss falls
we feel
most at
a loss
to explain
why this
soft bomb
of sticks
and fine
jade colored
fronds loud
with naught
drops to
us: does
the tree
let the
moss go
or does
the tree
ask us
to hold
the moss?
~~'Epiphyte Interlude' by Cecily Parks from 'The Seeds'
The aspen glitters in the wind.
And that delights us.
The leaf flutters, turning,
Because that motion in the heat of summer
Protects its cells from drying out. Likewise the leaf
Of the cottonwood.
The gene pool threw up a wobbly stem
And the tree danced. No.
The tree capitalized.
No. There are limits to saying,
In language, what the tree did.
It is good sometimes for poetry to disenchant us.
Dance with me, dancer. Oh, I will.
Aspens doing something in the wind.
~~ 'The Problem of Describing Trees' by Robert Hass from 'A Century of Poetry in The New Yorker'
"But the Earth is an unstable stone on which its occupants are planted. It must be tended with care, or else it will rebel. Our rock tells us when it’s hurt or yearning, and we must listen. Otherwise, one morning we may find it no longer wants to revolve." -- from 'The Archive of Alternate Endings' by Lindsey Drager

Detroit, Michigan is the pilot location for an initiative by environmental groups working together to preserve the genetics of California's oldest giant sequoias by cloning them and planting the saplings outside of their native habitat. Because of the wildfires that rip through California annually, several historic groves have already been destroyed and the species is at risk.

With a few pencils and a gridded sketchbook, the artist Pejac creates amazing trompe-l'oeil drawings that pop up off the page.
