You know if we are gonna use a collective term for them, we really should call "Script Kiddies" something that reflects their actual impact. They use cheap known exploits either across a wide range of targets, or while targeting an individual low-value target. Perhaps Malware Mosquitoes?

@AAKL@infosec.exchange @theregister@geeknews.chat @carlypage@mastodon.social It painfully makes sense. Nonprofits hurt for money constantly. Of course they would go where they go. The problem is systemic... how would we begin to patch it? (Not "even begin", I think finding a sustainable model and then beginning with it is the hard part.)

@AAKL@infosec.exchange @theregister@geeknews.chat @carlypage@mastodon.social I think we have a good number of the software tools already. They aren't perfect, but they are functional. We could use a shed in Idaho (non-specific) for location easily enough, and though hardware prices currently hurt, a skilled accountant may be able to get the hardware to work. The problem is going to quickly become staff. A system administrator, software developer, and accounting firm are costs that will add up and be tight regular charges. Without scale, there is no way to offer even a solid suite of services at a price that nonprofits can justify paying (late note: I went with "Accounting Firm" because that's probablh cheaper than a full time accountant. And fully forgot to add a law firm...)

@futurebird@sauropods.win Maybe I can help with that urge. The problem is NOT that we are incapable of makikg better software. It's that you have to be really good at marketing to a select group of people who do not use or understand the software. That, and specifically that, is why our software is shit.

@rzeta0@mathstodon.xyz @foone@digipres.club it is the specialist community's failure to communicate to normal people Actually I wanna focus on this specifically. A lot of the people in this field are terrible at communicating with NeuroTypicals (not that Neurotypicals are that good at communicating either - most would be SHOCKED to learn how much NTs get by on sharing contexts and similar processes that end in the same conclusions. It's ugly.) and wound up specialists in this because it became a place where we could understand and be understood. The eggshells get removed from the conversation, and there's no judgement if you ask variants of the same question or really dig in to a topic. About the long time without developing good interfaces: User Interfaces are very specialized work. They're a pain to write, and the specialists who can cleanly communicate between the strict language and the general, vague, nondeterministic, context bound language are going to want the paycheck that comes with working for companies with an express interest in controlling the user instead of communicating with them. Which means there just aren't a lot of individuals doing the critical and extra specialized UI work. And then we get hit with another problem - most of us are not exactly the loudest voices in the room. Vocally, we wind up like Fluttershy to these companies Flim and Flam. Building up the courage to speak doesn't always mean we get heard, while those actively misleading have a charisma that almost ensures everyone hears them. Put these things together and it's really not fair to put most of this weight on the technical community.
