Whoever tells us we can't afford the things we want is a liar, plain and simple.
"Anything we can do, we can afford to do", because the government creates the money it spends.

@HI_Greens@mastodon.scot These things are "sustainable" if society as a whole wants them to be sustained.
Public services are NOT the same as profit-making businesses. The "profit" of a public service is the "service", not money.

How will we be able to sustain them?

The hat trick the private sector pulled off was to redirect government spending into their own bank accounts. fresh money spent directly into their net worth.
This is why nobody else has any money, because the government doesn’t spend on them anymore.
Government spending is for billionaires and taxes are what everyone else pays

@HI_Greens@mastodon.scot to be fair the demands we make on the government for pensioner income (they aren't actually doing all that well, particularity the poorest) and for NHS care are increasing as the population ages and becomes increasing badly fed and unfit.
However we can afford to fund this if we chose to.
Strictly (according to MMT) we don't need to increases taxes but it would be perhaps it would be easier to justify if we were to tax those best able to afford it more (the rich, particularly the tax-avoiding ultra-rich and multinationals such as Amazon) and to remove the profiteering private sector out of our national services - NHS, Care, Water, Railways, Energy.

@gary_alderson@infosec.exchange @HI_Greens@mastodon.scot I think you're confusing the US with the rest of the world. The original post was about the UK Post Office, and other privatised public services. Some of our old publicly owned enterprises were badly managed and under invested. If we had cared enough we could have elected politicians who promised more money and better management but instead we kept electing politicians who promised low taxes and cut services they wouldn't fund.

Of course as private companies they also have the option of deciding some delivery areas aren't worth the cost and just not ship there at all, which isn't an option for the USPS as a public service.

@HI_Greens@mastodon.scot Hear hear! It's malign foreign influence and their agents trying to divide and conquer. How lucky are we to be Europeans! Look at all these so-called 'superpowers' that "can't afford" basic healthcare. Our very existence shames them. imho you may as well give up as a society if you cannot do the very minimum of housing, feeding, healing and educating your citizens. If there are people starving in your country by design you are in a failed state. We can obviously do better too. Still.

That's an over-simplification. Pensions were affordable when a large generation was paying for a small generation living for a short time. Now, a small generation is paying for a large generation (boomers) living forever.
You do not save up for your own pension, you pay for that of your parents and grandparents. Boomers trying to get younger generations on-board with not cutting pensions is literal generation theft. Don't let them.

Your perspective misses that first, while the amount of retired people increased, the amount of young people decreased. Yes, more people are getting pensions paid, but less kids and teenagers are getting schools paid, and there are less parents getting child support.
In addition, productivity rose a lot, even more than the ratio of _working person_ to _persion receiving pension_ changed. Lack of money is not a problem for paying pensions.
In other words: Please be careful, it seems like you are at risk of the same fallacy "kurzgesagt" ran into already. Don't let yourself get agitated in a generation conflict that doesn't exist.
Long version with focus on Germany, but the it mostly applies to other western countries too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UjmsfOXy5oM
