DOGE's cuts to humanitarian aid, USAID in particular.
A tracker co-created by Boston University professor Brooke Nichols projected over 780,000 deaths — mostly of children, many of infants — due to the Trump administration’s early-2025 USAID cuts, caused by malaria, tuberculosis, HIV, and more. These deaths were widely predicted from the beginning, a direct, known, and undeniable consequence of DOGE’s actions.

@infobeautiful@vis.social Also that juuling is never actually cool, birthdays lose coolness except for milestone spikes until you're older and every birthday is a milestone.
Whoever wrote the alt text didn't really pay attention to the graph and the jokes embedded in it. And if it was auto-generated, that just serves as a reminder that auto-generated alt text doesn't understand the image, or what's important in it.

So tired of searching for how to do ABC and finding "why would you want to do that? just do this other thing instead" when the other thing won't solve the problem I need ABC for.
Even better when searching for the next thing up the line also turns up "why would you want to do that? just do this other thing instead"

Interesting approach: a minimalist, db-less static site generator blog where every post is stored as exactly one JSON file and comments are offloaded to either the Fediverse or Bluesky, according to the blogger's preference.
I've got way too much customization in my current #11ty and #ClassicPress setup, but it would be interesting to look at for a side project or experiment.
Though I'm not convinced JSON is better than Markdown with front matter. Yes, it moves the parsing complexity from the build stage to the saving-your-work stage, so I suppose that counts for something.

What bothers me most these days are changes that miss the point, without showing that they're deliberately exploring a new take.
To pick an example from my avatar, I have a lot less trouble with Discovery season one digging into darker-and-edgier and ends-justify-the-means starfleet because 1: it's different characters and 2: by the time you get to the end of the season, you realize it's been an extended meditation on whether that kind of story fits Starfleet to begin with....
...than Picard season 3 just being darker and edgier trek with the TNG cast

@passwordsarehard4@mastodon.social @gary_alderson@infosec.exchange @pthane@toot.wales @HI_Greens@mastodon.scot Yeah, the fact that for-profit shipping companies often find it cheaper to hand the package off to the post office instead of finishing the job themselves does make you wonder.
Of course as private companies they also have the option of deciding some delivery areas aren't worth the cost and just not ship there at all, which isn't an option for the USPS as a public service.

Connecting things can be fun! But when they don't line up exactly (again: massive shared setting and characters built up over multiple generations of writers, artists, actors, special effects, etc), that shouldn't get in the way of what might be fun about the story itself.

Updated park/viewpoint review on my website!
Del Cerro Park
★★★★☆
Incredible views of the Pacific Ocean, Catalina Island, and the coastal hills and canyons from the top of the Palos Verdes Peninsula. Calm and quiet, usually breezy.

@veronica I still prefer native packages where possible, though TBH on Fedora it's mostly out of inertia. The biggest problems I've had have been getting flatpak apps to talk to other apps outside the sandbox through something like NativeMessaging.
That reminds me, someone sent me a link a few weeks ago to a script that should get flatpak browsers talking to keepassxc. I should dig that up, give it a try and see if it works with my setup!

Well, that's a relief, at least:
KDE e.V. has taken money from Framework, but only after verifying that Framework had severed their (already very limited) ties with DHH and Omarchy. Also, all of this happened a year ago, before Omarchy received a ludicrous amount of money from a veritable rogues gallery of villains.
https://pointieststick.com/2026/09/23/kde-and-ai-and-you-and-me/
I had noticed that Omarchy no longer appears on Framework's list of sponsorships after the debacle last fall.

If you haven't read the series before, I should warn you that books 8-10 are kind of a slog. He was adding more and more story threads and trying to fit all of them in, then started pulling things together.
I don't know if writing New Spring is what got him focused again, or if that was when he got his diagnosis and realized his time was limited.

Always Coming Home, Ursula K. Le Guin

Not a novel, not quite a short story/poetry collection, but a fascinating, thorough exploration of an imagined post-apocalyptic rural utopia in a far-future Napa Valley.

I like this quote from The Boring Internet (about how a lot of it's still around, just overshadowed by the glitzy, extractive, corporate net, and we can still build on top of that foundation)
The boring internet isn't protected by innocence. It's protected by awkwardness.
also:
Every property that made these protocols feel old and uncool to you in 2014 is part of what's keeping them alive in 2026.

@brennan@social.lol Not really. For a while I used the WordPress app occasionally, but I always had to go back and clean things up from the website afterward.
Add that my phone typing has gotten worse over time (or maybe the onscreen keyboards have), while my physical keyboarding has gotten better. (That kinda surprised me -- after how many decades of typing, suddenly I'm touch-typing more reliably? How? And it's not like I stopped typing on phones either, so why has that changed?)
I guess the closest I get to blogging from my phone now is when I write a social media post (or thread) that I later fix up or expand, or when I jot down notes that I build on later. I'd much rather connect a tablet to a smallish keyboard than deal with the tiny screen and tinier touch-points if I'm going to write anything longer than, say, this.

I’ve reviewed a lot of tech products over the past decade and a half, and all I can tell you is that it is a failure when you ask people to adapt to computers. Computers should adapt to people. Asking people to make themselves more legible to software —to turn themselves into a database — is a doomed idea.

Looks like some of the neighbors decided not to wait for the slurry seal to finish setting before parking on the street. I hope it's not stuck too badly to their tires tomorrow morning.
Plus there's the neighbor who decided (briefly) to try driving on it less than two hours after it was laid down.
But the one that's really just out there is the city garbage truck. Really, they couldn't coordinate that with the paving?

New game review on my website!
Legends of Amberland
★★★★☆
A fun throwback to the early Might and Magic and Bard's Tale fantasy games of the 1980s and 1990s. Grid- and turn-based, with old-style pixelated graphics and LOTS of side quests.
