New piece on the blog on the #IMBIE paper that has just come out. How healthy are the ice sheets? What is driving their mass change and what do we know now after a half a century of observations by satellites? #iceSheets #SeaLevelRise #ClimateChange #ClimateImpacts #EO #SatelliteData Half a century of ice loss: the new IMBIE dataset http://sternaparadisaea.net/2026/09/17/half-a-century-of-ice-loss-the-new-imbie-dataset/

Half a century of ice loss: the new IMBIE dataset

A big new community paper has just landed: the IMBIE paper is a big effort to assess the long term health of the ice sheets. What did we find and what does it mean?

Romero et al present an ice-free and paleo sea level chronology for James Ross Island in the northeastern Antarctic Peninsula area. They found that the advance of the local ice cap happened sometime after 40,000 years ago, and this implies a period of retreated ice in MIS 3. #Geology #Antarctica #IceSheets #SeaLevel https://doi.org/10.1016/j.quascirev.2026.110133

A robot swarm is on a mission to map #Greenland’s perilous #icesheets The fleet of drones, subs and sensors will map ice melt to forecast #climate #tippingpoints Data from expedition funded by #UK’s secretive new inventions agency, will feed into climate models. Idea is to forecast when #ice melt will tip climate-regulating ocean currents into shutdown, and try to develop early warning system that would let humanity know when #glaciers are changing https://www.sciencenews.org/article/robot-mission-map-greenland-ice-climate https://archive.ph/OaxnC

A robot swarm is on a mission to map Greenland's perilous ice sheets

The ambitious expedition aims to fill data gaps about the glacier-sea boundary to predict when the world might tip into a catastrophic climate regime.

How is this for a feedback loop? Ice sheets build up during a glaciation lowering global sea level → reduced water load leads to increased mid ocean ridge volcanism after a 10-20 kyr lag → volcanism releases iron in the ocean → iron causes plankton blooms → atmospheric CO₂ goes down → ice sheets build up #ClimateChange #IceSheets #SeaLevel https://www.nature.com/articles/s41561-026-01982-7

Ocean iron fertilization from enhanced mid-ocean-ridge volcanism due to ice-age sea-level falls - Nature Geoscience

Increased hydrothermal iron inputs from mid-ocean ridges, triggered by ice-age sea-level falls, supported higher surface primary productivity during the last two glacial terminations, according to proxy records of nutrient consumption in the eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean.
