@cthos @janl @cwebber to be clear: I easily share my code with folks. I don't mind the "spirit" of foss. I take issue with having my work thrown into a soulless machine devoid of any of the community I would otherwise be building. I think it's healthy for us to look at each others' implementations and compare notes and have done a lot of that, and a lot of sharing of my own.
but honestly, fuck Jarred in particular. He's always been kind of a dickbag.

@ShadowJonathan @woozle @meatballhat thank you! Someone suggested it might have to do with my instance not yet being federated enough (it's a relatively new, single-user instance), but that seems... strange?
I can't express how satisfied it makes me that my default settings on GTS mean that any replies from randos have to be approved before they even show up. This is how microblogging should be. We all knew from long-form blogging days that having an unmoderated comment section was a horrible idea, so why do we do it on socmed?

@saltywizard @skinnylatte For one, you give people here the tools they need to moderate their own conversations. Bluesky has been doing a lot on this front, and I think that's a big reason why, even though bsky isn't perfect for Black folks either, it's definitely doing a lot better.
You also make this place generally more accessible. It might not feel like it to the average techie, but some people feel you practically need a CS degree to be on here with how complicated the experience can be.

I feel like we haven't even scratched the surface of what the weight of long covid and all the extra deaths are really going to mean for us in the long term. There's just so many people whose lives have been shut down in serious ways, so many people who are no longer with us who should still be.
I don't know how long it'll take for us to start really coping with it, and doing something honest about it. We're certainly still acting, overall, as if it's just not actually happening (when it clearly is).

For folks who are wondering: they're working on federation! And you can already use codeberg accounts to log into someone else's forgejo account, so contributors just need a codeberg account and they're good to go as-is, while federation falls in place.

@aesthr@wandering.shop the more I think about it the more this seems like a direct function of mastodon’s absolutely trash community-level moderation capabilities. When you can’t rely on a centralized company to hire a bunch of people to play whack-a-mole with these losers, you need something that scales. The community has tried to do these things itself ofc (fediblock) but you need something more accessible in general at the individual level, and with sharper teeth.
I’ll hand it to bsky for building a lot of these tools already while mastodon continues to drag its knuckles on the ground and operate a largely-unmoderated mega instance

@aesthr@wandering.shop I mean that’s a great example. I literally have my settings such that if I don’t follow someone, I need to approve their replies by default. If I post quiet public, it black holes their replies without even asking me (I use this when posting about gen AI now, for example). And that’s just a janky version of what bsky already does.
I do agree there’s a lot of these people on here btw and I think what I’m getting at is part of the reason for that is that they’ve been allowed to thrive and push more reasonable people out
