We're excited to share that Firefox now uses zlib-rs for gzip (de)compression. This has both performance and safety advantages, but it took a while to get zlib-rs into production. Read why in Folkert's blog: https://trifectatech.org/blog/zlib-rs-in-firefox/

Thanks to @glandium@mozilla.social, @gabrielesvelto@mas.to, Bobby Holley, @nlnet@social.nlnet.nl, @sovtechfund@mastodon.social, Chainguard, Astral / @charliermarsh@hachyderm.io, @mozilla@mastodon.social, @ProssimoISRG@infosec.exchange

We are proud to announce the first release of our latest data compression project, Zstandard in Rust! Read why we did this, the current state of the project, and where we're hoping to take it: https://trifectatech.org/blog/announcing-zstandard-in-rust/

Zstandard is a modern successor to zlib, providing better compression faster.

Thanks to Chainguard, Astral / @charliermarsh@hachyderm.io, @nlnet@social.nlnet.nl, and @sovtechfund@mastodon.social.

Zlib-rs is now feature-complete! We've released v0.6, the first version with a stable and complete API. The blog post has the details.

Zlib-rs offers an alternative to C/C++ counterparts. It provides on-par (or better!) performance while reducing attack surface through memory safety.

With thanks to our maintainer @folkertdev@hachyderm.io, our contributors and @sovtechfund@mastodon.social.

Announcement: ntpd-rs is coming to @ubuntu@ubuntu.social! In RustNation's closing keynote Canonical announced that we are preparing ntpd-rs, our Network Time Protocol implementation, for Ubuntu.

They will support our work and help us reach a long-term goal in our roadmap: shipping both NTP and the Precision Time Protocol in a single utility.

Also, a big thanks to @jnsgruk@hachyderm.io for the wonderful compliments about sudo-rs in Ubuntu.

The Network Time Protocol is generally used completely unprotected, much like the web was before HTTPS. At @fosdem@fosstodon.org 2026, Ruben explained how we aim to push adoption of secure time (NTS) using pools of NTS servers.

In our data compression projects, we sometimes hit limitations in Rust itself and in the surrounding tooling.

In this blog, Folkert covers some of our contributions to the Rust compiler and shows how we have become increasingly comfortable fixing these issues ourselves: https://trifectatech.org/blog/fixing-our-own-problems-in-the-rust-compiler/

The joint statement “Improving Europe's cybersecurity posture through memory safety”, has now been published: https://trifectatech.org/blog/calling-for-memory-safety-incentives-in-eu-cybersecurity-policies/

It calls for stronger #MemorySafety incentives in EU cybersecurity policies.

It is endorsed by industry leaders like Infineon Technologies, and industry and academic experts, including experts from Signify, Volvo Cars, Radboud University and Delft University of Technology.

We look forward to presenting it to national and EU policymakers in 2026.

Plugfest! Ruben and David joined 70 time sync experts to test the next version of NTP, and the all-new Client Server PTP (CSPTP) during the #ISPCS Plugfest in Ottawa:

First implementations of CSPTP (IEEE 1588.1) were tested against each other with Meinberg and NetTimeLogic.

Our #opensource implementation of CSPTP runs in ntpd-rs, with our PTP library Statime under the hood.

We thank Meinberg and Heiko Gerstung for supporting our travel costs.
