We're making good progress on upki, our collaboration with the rustls project to bring browser-grade web PKI capabilities to low level system utilities.

The first beta release makes available revocation checks based on CRLite filters from Mozilla.

#Canonical is hosting the backend service, and is now making a PPA available so you can try out upki in #Ubuntu, as well as a patched version of OpenSSL that makes use of the new capability.

Give it a go and let us know!

https://discourse.ubuntu.com/t/try-the-upki-preview-for-ubuntu/84705

As ever, thanks to @djc@hachyderm.io and @ctz@infosec.exchange for their hard work on this!

Try the `upki` preview for Ubuntu!

The development of upki has been steadily progressing over the past few months. Since my last update, the project has released a beta version of the CLI tool and library, and the Ubuntu Foundations team has released a preview that users of Ubuntu 26.04 LTS and Ubuntu 26.10 development snapshots can try out. The preview is still experimental, but it contains both the upki client packages, and the initial OpenSSL integration. An instance of the upki mirror which serves the CRLite filter data is b

I'm thrilled to announce that the next target of #Ubuntu's oxidization plan will be ntpd-rs!

We will be funding the @trifectatech@fosstodon.org to build new features, enhance security isolation, and ultimately deliver a unified, memory-safe time synchronization utility for the Linux ecosystem for NTP, NTS and PTP.

Read the details on our Discourse! https://discourse.ubuntu.com/t/ntpd-rs-its-about-time/79154

Ntpd-rs: it's about time!

I am thrilled to announce the next target in our campaign to replace core system utilities with memory-safe Rust rewrites in Ubuntu. In upcoming releases, Ubuntu will be adopting ntpd-rs as the default time synchronization client and server, eventually replacing chrony, linuxptp and with any luck, gpsd for time syncing use-cases. ntpd-rs is a full-featured implementation of the Network Time Protocol (NTP), written entirely in Rust. Today the #Ubuntu Foundations team posted an update on our progress toward 100% uutils coreutils adoption in Ubuntu.

As we stand for the release of 26.04 LTS, all utils except `cp`, `mv` and `rm` will be using uutils by default, with those remaining to be moved across early in the 26.10 cycle.

I'd like to acknowledge the huge amount of work that @sylvestre@framapiaf.org and the wider @uutils@mastodon.social project put into this, and the collaboration with us and our partners on the security auditing and fixes.

Onwards!

Just replaced the Mediatek wireless card in my Framework 13 with an Intel AX210 vPro card.

My experience with the Mediatek one has been that it's very fast when it's very fast, but the driver has some real shortcomings with regards to stability when roaming between APs.

For anyone with a Ryzen powered Framework, the Intel wireless card works just fine, despite what the website might indicate 😇

Absolutely delighted to announce that Canonical is joining the Rust Foundation as a Gold Member!

We're planning to support the foundation in their approach to securing crates.io, providing access to our build/test infrastructure across all architectures #Ubuntu supports, and trying to further the conversation on how Rust can safely address core concerns like cryptography, HTTP handling, and async support.

Check out the full announcement on our website:

AI tools are becoming ubiquitous. Adoption across the tech industry has been mixed, both in terms of which projects are embracing "AI" technologies, and in how companies are structuring their adoption

My latest #blog post details how AI will play a part in both #Canonical and #Ubuntu's future, my framework for classifying AI features in the OS, and how Canonical is currently approaching adoption internally.

Introducing Frontdesk: earlier feedback on sponsoring requests At Debcrafters we’re always looking for ways to make Ubuntu’s contribution processes smoother and give people a better experience when they show up with a patch, a merge, or an SRU. One recurring pain point is sponsoring. Contributors without upload rights depend on a relatively small group of sponsors and reviewers to look at their merge proposals and bugs, and that group is busy — juggling their own work, other reviews, and e

Ubuntu Server Gazette - Issue 13 - The balance of innovation and reliability

Ubuntu 26.04 LTS: The balance of innovation and reliability Ubuntu Server is well-established as a reliable server Operating System. But let’s be honest, there’s often an assumption that “reliable” is mutually exclusive with “glamorous”, that something dependable must also be boring. The rock-solid stability underpinning much of modern technology is invisible by design. It runs beneath the surface, enabling your services, platforms, and ideas built on top of it. Nobody notices it because it neve

Improving Ubuntu Infrastructure Status Reporting

Hey everyone, Recently, we’ve experienced a few infrastructure reliability issues that impacted various Ubuntu services. We know firsthand how frustrating it is when the tools you need to do distro work are unresponsive. What makes these situations even more annoying is our current lack of clear, public-facing reporting and dashboards. Without a centralized way to surface the state of our infra it is that to know what is broken, what is degraded, and what is currently being worked on. This rec

How Charm Tech combats Hyrum’s Law

Instead of “move fast and break things”, the Charm Tech team focuses on considered design and stability. That doesn’t mean we don’t make improvements, but when we do, we’re careful to do so in a way that doesn’t break our existing users. We aim to be boring technology. A large part of this is ensuring that when Ops (and Jubilant and other tools) get new functionality, we add it in a backwards compatible way. We also think a lot about how we might make future changes when designing APIs (and CLI

If you’ve ever built a snap with Snapcraft or a rock with Rockcraft, you’ve likely engaged with the documentation and forums along your path to a working artifact. We put a lot of time into providing means for developers to learn how to package their software. But we’ve put comparatively little time into describing the structure of the craft apps themselves. In this post, I’d like to shed some light on the philosophy across the growing list of Canonical packaging tools, including Snapcraft, Cha
